Ives, Burl - Down In The Valley Lyrics

Down in the valley the valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow love, hear the wind blow
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow

Roses love sunshine, violets love dew
Angels in heaven, know I love you

If you don't love me, love whom you please
Put your arms round me, give my heart ease
Give my heart ease love, give my heart ease
Put your arms round me, give my heart ease

Write me a letter, send it by mail
Send it in care of, the Birmingham Jail
Birmingham Jail love, Birmingham Jail
Send it in care of, the Birmingham Jail

Build me a castle, forty feet high
So I can see her, as she rides by
As she rides by love, as she rides by
So I can see her, as she rides by

Down in the valley, the valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow

My Grandaddy used to sing this song all the time while we were on the boat catching catfish in the lake and riding the golf kart past my dads treehouse. Now all I can think of when I hear this is him laying in a hospital bed loosing his mind and my brother trying his best to sing it through tears at his funeral...I miss my Grandaddy so much and want to go back to that lake and play in the bright red clay near the lake again.

I was playing a video game online with some friends and one of them asked if anyone knew the song about a valley down low. Well since we were on discord I keyed up and started singing this song. This was the very first song my Dad taught me to play on the guitar. Brought back some memories

  16. B.... ....

My grandma would sing this to me when I had nightmares to help me sleep. So many memories.

  17. M.... ....

I think Burl Ives sang about every song written during his time.  I recall singing this song in school during sing-song class (about 1962).  P.S.:  my grandfather and Mr. Ives were personally acquainted.

See pictures of Burl Ives in the bathtub taking a bubble bath in The Spiral Road. His gluttonous belly is unbelievable and his exposed naval is cute. Hii boobs are cute. Burl Ives has big boobs for a man and a plump pink bare butt

Burl Ives was one of those singers whose voice could sooth the most savage of heart;s This was music when songs were truly heart felt

  39. E.... R....

I love you Grandpa, you used to sing this song to me. Look forward to your release from Prison in 2028. Why'd you rob that bank?

    E.... R....

    Is your grandpa still alive?

    E.... R....

    Too funny !

  40. F.... ....

This was one of my dad's favorite song. Funny a Puerto Rican boy growning up in New York city durning the 60's. He was raised in the city with the heart of a country boy. Miss every time I here it.

  41. J.... ....

This is such a beautiful song. It really is.

A couple years ago, I sang a cover of it. Here's the link of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuWLRw1Rgz4

  42. R.... ....

My obnoxious song story: My mother's mother died when I was 15 of lung cancer. I think about her alot lately. She sung this song to me when I was a kid but I forgot about it until one day at work a guy was singing it. I immediately recognized it even after all these years and he told me the lyrics (which is all you need to find it.)

  43. S.... K....

My grandfather and I always sang this when I was little. Rest In Peace Pap. I love you

    C.... ....

    I'm so sorry..

    C.... ....

please don't sing it to me

    C.... ....

So sad for your loss. What a beautiful memory your parents gave you. Your mom and dad must have been very close to leave together.

    C.... ....

My greatest condulences! I'm very sorry about your great loss! But I think you did a very great, heartwarming thing as you were there and held your parents hands when they passed away... . They are gone, but not surely dead! Only the forgotten is dead!

    C.... ....

    @Farmall 😃

  47. M.... D....

Does anyone remember 12 inch records. ( If you don't here's a clue. They preceded 8 tracks and cassettes. My father being Dutch got a copy of "Down to the sea in ships". We played it so many times that I knew the words to the every song on both sides of the record. I'll never forget Burl Ives.

  48. R.... S....

  50. O.... 3....

For someone to give this a thumbs down, they must have a deep empty void inside of them where nothing grows, or if it does, it s better left unsown.

  51. O.... 3....

A tearjerker, this. Grabs you by the throats and doesn't let go, not for a moment. Class, man, class.

  55. W.... W....

All these people talking about how their parents or grandparents use to sing this song to them....back when people sang for enjoyment, and most of them knew a lot of songs. In the future people will reminisce about how "grandpa used to show me this song on Youtube before I went to bed". Nobody sings songs anymore, like there are "normal people" and there are "singers" who sing songs. Sad.

    W.... W....

yes but it is changing i use otsing to my daughter and now her fiance sings to her in broken english...he is from Europe and his english is getting better all the time but she is the only one he will sing for..i SAY GO DUDE lol

I remember back when I was a little boy my grandpa used to sing and play this on his ukulele. I so miss that.

  62. S.... R....

When I was a really little boy, maybe when I was like 2, my aunt would babysit me and she used to sing this song to calm me down if I was crying, and she would hold me in her rocking recliner. I very clearly remember that. :) It was the Down in the Valley part, not the Birmingham Jail. lol.

  63. h.... ....

I'm 43 yrs old and I remember singing this in music class like in 1st or 2nd grade. That very old music teacher sure taught us a lot of very old folk songs. She would play different interments in the middle of the room and we would sing in a circle around her. I was so young I have forgotten her name and all the songs she taught us. But... every once in a while, her an old folk song and thank her. This is one of those great songs. Thank you for your part in sculpting my love for music.

    h.... ....

I remember learning these songs in 1st grade too. Folk music is so important.

    h.... ....

I remember this song from second grade.  My second grade was about 10 years before yours (1962).   We sang "dear" instead of "love".

  64. J.... T....

You know I'd like to enjoy this song and Ives' rendering of it in its proper context, as a fine example of American Folk music, but ... Stir Crazy ..

I have one thing to say and that's stir crazy

  70. B.... H....

This old folk song dates back to about 1927 and has been recorded by many artists over the years. I like Burl Ives, but perhaps Slim Whitman's version is the best version recorded. Thanks for sharing this one.

  71. P.... P....

THIS isn't fair, this planet and our existence is utterly exhausting. Lies, love and happiness, they are all the same. Our 'Human Condition" is disturbing.

    P.... P....

    Suicide is always a consideration.

    P.... P....

I wouldn't be upset or angry if I thought that would solve all my problems. I'd just do it

    P.... P....

@Peter Pratsch I suppose so. I have had similar thoughts of a simple human condition, but it only ceases to seem bland once another perspective is considered.

  72. A.... A....

My dad use to play this song on a guitar and sing it to me before going to bed.

    R.... A....

yes I think you are correct````````

  91. T.... M....

Reminds me of my dad :)

  92. R.... ....

Burl Ives had an incredible collection of folk songs. One of his albums was dedicated just to children's material and is well worth looking up. (Froggie Went A Courtin is a classic) He also published a paperback book of folk songs with the words and music of many of his most popular tunes. It was called The Burl Ives Song Book (Ballantine) and a lot of fun for anyone into the old folk stuff.

  93. 1.... ....

Ives was identified in the 1950 pamphlet Red Channels and blacklisted as an entertainer with supposed Communist ties.[22] In 1952 he cooperated with the House Committee on Unamerican Activities (HUAC) and agreed to testify - Wikipedia

  94. L.... K....

My dad used to sing this to me every single night. LOve this song

  95. C.... F....

When it comes to film, Burl Ives can stand on his own two feet. He won his own Oscar for acting. My father has told me that he is also known for collecting old folk songs from the passing generation that might be lost to history and recording them so that they would be preserved. Truly a man who left this world a little better for having been in it. I was very sad as a boy when I heard that he passed away.

  96. g.... ....

The song sung in the film 'stir crazy'

  97. K.... B....

It never sounds as good unless your mother, father, or grandparent is singing it to you :)
