The second version, generally attributed to Blind Willie McTell, is usually known as "Delia," and is told from a more ambiguous point of view. Among the many singers who have covered "Delia" are Bob Dylan and David Bromberg.

+gandimere Thank you. It always is valuable to find out more about the roots, the source, of a song. I learned this song about 55 years ago. I don't remember who sang the version I heard, but I remember finding it moving -- and bluesy.

You left out Waylon Jennings version which is far, far darker than any other version including the versions by his good fried John Cash

There have been over 28 collected versions of this song since the murder on Christmas Eve 1900 in Savannah GA. The authorship of the song is unknown, the versions have changed over the years with artist writing their own verses with a change here and a change there. Which "Real Lyrics" would you like? Burl, "America's Balladeer", has more authority to sing the song than most people do. These lyics are more "real" than you think. The fact that burl sang em makes them real.
