Isbell, Jason - The Devil Is My Running Mate Lyrics
The devil is my running mate.
This here is his favorite state
Sorry you folks had to wait.
He always likes to show up late.
It's streetlamps on petroleum
Let's pull in here and get us some.
Supplies are running out now.
It ain't the reason for the war.
That's meanness boy and nothing more.
They tried to do this all before,
but Daddy wouldn't let them.
Sometimes I don't what I got into.
Sometimes I can only hear their voices
casting me back from where I came.
The devil is my running mate.
Confusion is his favorite state.
Surely you folks can relate.
I know we've gathered here to hate.
It doesn't matter who we blame
as long as you all hear a name.
All them bastards look the same.
Everyone is guilty.
Everybody look away.
Look away. Look away.
It doesn't matter what I say.
It's what I do that's shifty.
Sometimes I don't know what we got into.
Sometimes I don't think I know a thing.
Sometimes I can't even see the trees now
for the flames, for the flames.
The devil is my running mate,
and this here is his favorite state.
There ain't no other candidate.
It wouldn't matter anyway.
The devil is my running mate.
The devil is my running mate.
The devil is my running mate.

The lyrics, how they relate to your moment anguish and suffering, but somehow rises you, nourish your soul to keep pushing and blow away the torments.
Beautiful song, sad the message just goes unheard...
What would you say your interpretation of the message is? :)
Shawn James does a great cover.
I love Isbell but that Shawn James cover is unreal. I talked to him about it at a show. He said they got kicked out of that church they used in the video and snuck back in later and shot it anyway. He said fuck it they gotta forgive us right?
Oh my yes! I absolutely love that cover. Its amazing.

Jason isbell is the god of music come to show chavs their wrongs.
Jason's quite a bit younger and I think the Truckers have all but dismembered... Patterson's doing his thing, I love it all ! Maybe they'll get back together for a side project and HOPEFULLY tour it... YES, those 3 albums with Isbell are immortal, probably all 3 are in my top 20! He's got one hell of a band as well a Patterson! What a time though 3 axes and top notch pickers and writers...
What incredible lyrics.
I keep trying to cover his songs but I always end up tearing up in the middle of them.
Love this song, but then I love all Jason Isbell's stuff so far.
Very, very good. My first listen. Impressive.
