Isbell, Jason - Cover Me Up Lyrics

A heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun you can't trust anyone
I was so sure what I needed was more tried to shoot out the sun
Days when we raged, we flew off the page such damage was done
But I made it through, cause somebody knew I was meant for someone

So girl, leave your boots by the bed we ain't leaving this room
Till someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good

Put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress in Richmond on high
But I sobered up and I swore off that stuff forever, this time
And the old lovers sing “I thought it'd be me who helped him get home”
But home was a dream, one I'd never seen till you came along

So girl, hang your dress up to dry we ain't leaving this room
Till Percy Priest breaks open wide and the river runs through
And carries this house on the stones like a piece of driftwood
Cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good

So girl, leave your boots by the bed we ain't leaving this room
Till someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good
Cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good

Isbell, Jason Cover Me Up Comments
  1. P.... B....

    Beautiful Song.

  2. R.... D....

Too bad he's a liberal hack.

  3. G.... K....

    Jake Hoot brought me here!

  4. B.... -....

Has Austin City Limits had Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle ??? Don't recall seeing these talented folks here. I did see Colter Wall on ACL. That's what Austin City Limits is all about.....not so much all the other so called " music " .

  5. B.... -....

    Love Jason Isbell !

  6. O.... K....

Did anyone see/hear that he used a Viola?

  7. B.... H....

    Morgan Wallen sent me here.

  8. S.... M....

I feel sorry for the ppl saying that Wallen's version is better. It doesn't even come close..

  9. M.... N....

If this song doesnt touch you...you're dead already

  10. M.... H....

I personally loved Morgan wallen’s vocals more but Jason isbell is a miracle worker with this song

  11. J.... B....

You had me at "Heart on the run, keeps a hand on the gun..."

  12. A.... W....

    Songwriting at it's finest.

  13. J.... H....

Bloomberg wasting a lot of 💰

  14. J.... T....

Check our Morgan Wallens cover of this song, did an acoustic version and a video, both are badass, not taking anything away from this guy

  15. R.... ....

Thank you thank you thank you Jason Isbell for such an amazing song. With your blessing given, I also give my thanks to Morgan Wallen for creating a beautiful cover. I can't think of another song that has pulled at my heart strings with such force.

  16. A.... ....

Personally I'm primarily a rock and metal person, though I dabble in other genres. And when it comes to country only really older country appeals to me. But this right here is a beautiful song and he's a new favorite artist added to the list.

  17. j.... 1....

    Wow. Just heart-rending and beautiful

  18. D.... E....

The delicate intricacies of Jason Isbell’s voice break my heart every time

  19. s.... c....

I think Jake hoot from The Voice blew the song away however I would love to hear Chris Stapleton sing the song.

  20. D.... C....

better than most on country radio tbh

  21. D.... R....

Great song ! I'm so glad Morgan is covering it because his voice and control saves these lyrics!

  22. K.... P....

I love this song but the first line always makes me laugh with the heart on the run gun anyone ryme like ahhh the three ryme whyyyy 😂

  23. S.... O....

I like Isbell's original better than Morgan Whalen's cover because it's clear from the way they sing it that Isbell lived these lyrics and Whalen did not.

  24. E.... H....

This man is the best song writer of all time!..... Debate me.

    E.... H....

Lori McKenna- swallows me whole. I dare say she is up there on the list.
    Pete Bernhard- orphan- acoustic version.

  25. Z.... B....

Morgan Wallen brought me here and I am so glad he did!! Isbell is a songwriting treasure!

    Z.... B....

He's also a damn good vocalist.

    Z.... B....

I’m my opinion he’s the best writer since Dylan and Springsteen. This song is so personal I don’t Think it can be truly covered no matter how good a singer they are.

  26. H.... ....

I’m glad he wrote this, but I like Morgan Wallens cover better. Morgan’s voice is almost like this song was made for Morgan to sing

    H.... ....

Morgans version is good, but its Isbell's song. Isbell's words, Isbell's feelings, and Isbell's life in a song. A story of his battle to become sober. A love letter to his wife. That's why in my eyes his version is the best. Every word is a portrait of his life. Isbell will go down as one of the greatest songwriters of this era.

  27. W.... H....

Imagine thinking that Morgan fella’s version even comes close to this

    W.... H....

    Ya it definitely does

    W.... H....

    William Henderson it does

    W.... H....

    It does tho.

  28. H.... M....

“I sobered up. I swore off that stuff, forever this time” line hits home like a ton of red Georgia bricks.

    H.... M....

Word up brother, except the bricks are Alabama ones for me.

    H.... M....

@Mike Seals Nursing another holiday hangover today, I need to listen to more Isbell!

  29. M.... H....

    What a song......truly awesome...

  30. c.... ....

I once had a girl, or should i say, she once had me 0:13

  31. J.... F....

I sat and drank with this guy in a small dive bar in Muscle Shoals, Alabama once... That was a lifetime ago.

  32. T.... B....

This song is incredible. Some of the best songwriting ever. It’s so beautiful and so sad.

  33. a.... ....

Why hasn't Ray Wylie Hubbard ever headlined at ACL?

  34. n.... ....

Morgan Wallen did this song better. No question.

  35. s.... ....

    THIS IS WHATS UP

  36. n.... ....

    I want that drummers job.

  37. C.... W....

Just stopped by to see who this communist, anti gun moron was.

  38. d.... ....

    What utter garbage.

  39. E.... C....

coming here cause i just learned that morgan wallen's version was a cover

  40. S.... H....

My husband just told me this was his song to me. I cried.

    S.... H....

I just watched Morgan Wallen's cover (short film) of this song and was bawling by the end.

  41. P.... W....

Put this through my headphones and it's transcendental :-)

  42. N.... p....

It turns out you made it through because you were made for alot of people. Great lyrics!

  43. D.... K....

“White people have no soul in their music” plays JI

    D.... K....

Really poor, managing to be racist while pretending to be appreciative of JI.

  44. T.... B....

Jake Hoot brought me here. This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

  45. C.... B....

    Wow... What an amazing song.

  46. D.... V....

Wow, I've never heard this song before Jake Hoot from the Voice sang it. I'm 6 years late, but it's still a badass song!

  47. C.... J....

I found myself lost in his voice. Beautiful💗 Breathtaking...

  48. c.... c....

Best story teller in a very long time. Live oak is just genius I mean come on
There's a man that walk beside me he is who I used to be and I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me.
    Dang that's deep....

  49. L.... ....

That guitar sounds absolutely perfectly tuned

  50. K.... H....

    "We ain't leaving this room,
'Til Percy Priest breaks open wide and the river runs through,
And carries this house on The Stones like a piece of driftwood"

    Gets me every single time

  51. R.... J....

Listen to Jake Hoot sing this song

  52. T.... M....

The greatest country song since He Stopped Loving Her Today.

  53. j.... ....

I like how Morgan Wallen sings it better, but without Jason, writing this AMAZING SONG, there would be no Morgan Wallen version 😎👍🏼💯

    j.... ....

No he doesn’t. There is no emotion from him when he sings it. That can only come from the person who wrote it.

  54. E.... P....

This song fits me and my love perfectly

  55. M.... D....

Michelle poynter this you and i

  56. t.... r....

    unreal..Jason Isbell.

  57. O.... L....

Jake hoot took me here. Love the song 💜

  58. A.... ....

    If only. ❤️

  59. r.... ....

    One of Jason's best songs.
I am more or less forced to watch the Voice with my wife each week and I usually don't pay attention and fall asleep. I almost fell out of my chair last night when the Voice contestant, Jake Hoot, sang this song. Probably the best song ever selected by an artist on that show.

    r.... ....

I agree--I was familiar with Jason Isbell, but I had not heard this particular song. It is a stunning song. I thought Jake Hoot did a great rendition of it.

    r.... ....

It's an amazing song for sure, but I think my all time favorite song from the Voice was when Allisin Porter sang "Blue Bayou", still gives me chills.

  60. I.... ....

The Voice Jake Hoot brought me here 😍😍😍😍😍

    I.... ....

Me too! Jake saaanng that song!

    I.... ....

Iona I know, right. Go Jake

    I.... ....

Me too! Why haven't I ever heard this song until now???

    I.... ....

    Lg Mayes pretty rude

    I.... ....

    Hoot brought me here! ❤️

  61. 4.... ....

Such an honest and true performance!! I love this beyond words!! ♥️♥️

  62. A.... J....

I've been musician all my life, pro for 20+ years. When I heard this I honestly wanted to quit music. Not because I'm bad at it, but because in that moment I felt like what needs to be said has been said.

    A.... J....

For what it's worth and for music's sake, don't quit, because anyone who hears and understands what needs to be said in the words and melodies of a song was born to be a musician. The world needs musicians for those moments when words aren't enough.

    A.... J....

Amy Johnson wow. What a statement. Don’t ever quit. You hv an original in there somewhere.

  63. D.... C....

    Sucks morgan wallen way better

  64. B.... C....

WOW. I wish there were large CAPS😁😁

  65. S.... R....

    Norwegian Wood

  66. T.... F....

    *morgan Wallens cover is shit*
    Change my mind
A recovered addict singing about his experience can’t be matched by someone who’s never been there
Jason will be in the hall of fame one day

  67. S.... R....

The emotion that comes across in his voice on this particular version of this song breaks me into pieces every time I hear it. So beautifully powerful. I'm glad to see him finally being recognized as the great performer and song writer his truly is. Songs like this can only come from a place within that many of us wouldn't survive. I for one feel my life is richer having been blessed with sharing his experiences through his songs.

  68. m.... j....

What the fuck this isn’t Morgan

  69. J.... C....

Give my new country album a listen on my profile and SoundCloud.

  70. H.... T....

I first heard this song covered by Noah Guthrie and fell in love. So glad I’m finally coming here to find the original — amazing!

  71. M.... T....

Morgan's cover is better. Fight me.

  72. X.... ....

Thanks to a late cable bill and my cable being cut off a few years agoI discovered this man on PBS and absolutely love this song and many more of his but this Is my favorite.

  73. M.... ....

Found this original after loving the Morgan Wallen cover. Absolutely a beautiful song and Morgan Wallen does Jason Isbell justice in his cover. I love this version just as much as Morgans.

  74. C.... M....

    Cover Me Up
    Jason Isbell
A heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun
    You can't trust anyone
I was so sure what I needed was more
Tried to shoot out the sun
Days when we raged, we flew off the page
    Such damage was done
But I made it through, 'cause somebody knew
    I was meant for someone
So girl, leave your boots by the bed
    We ain't leaving this room
    Till someone needs medical help
    Or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough
    To use me for good
Put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress
    In Richmond on high
But I sobered up and I swore off that stuff
    Forever this time
    And the old lover's sing
"I thought it'd be me who helped him get home"
    But home was a dream
One I'd never seen till you came along
    So girl,…

  75. D.... Y....

    This is amazing...

  76. S.... G....

I wonder who the fuck are those 646 people disliking it? I guess some bitter women and men out there jealous of Jason and Amanda's love?

  77. K.... S....

    AWESOME! !!!

  78. S.... G....

I LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH

  79. T.... ....

I was one of the people who dumped on country music, but the few songs of his that I've listened to have me hooked.

  80. G.... F....

Besides the absolutely incredible vocals and songwriting - Jason Isbell performances are always straight up guitar porn.

  81. M.... L....

He is so talented and I hope he remains addiction free.

  82. S.... F....

I can't stop listening. To Jason's version or Morgan Wallen

  83. C.... B....

Wow..dont remember how I found it..listening to the cover by Morgan walken and found Jason..just wow..because I was never enough..

  84. T.... M....

" I made it through because somebody knew I was meant for someone ". That line is touching just like many of Jasons lyrics

  85. .... ....
