Isbell, Jason - Cigarettes And Wine Lyrics

I saw her in Roosevelt Springs, where time doesn't touch anything
She never did say she could sing, but I figured it so
I needed some company then, not sisters or children or men
That's a hell of a spot to be in, but she put me in tow

Money and liquor and lust had taken my heart and my trust
I could see ashes and dust were headed my way
She tended bar in the town
Her alto settled me down
I started hanging around
Didn't need much to say

She smelled like cigarettes and wine
And she kept me happy all the time
I know that ain't much of a line
but it's the Gods' own truth
She lives down inside of me still
Rolled up like a twenty dollar bill
She left me alone with these pills
In the last of my youth

Wings on her shoulders and feet, a bar on Gethsemane Street
I took time to plan my retreat, and backed out the door
I must be attracted to those who've witnessed a man in the throes
Of life that ain't grindstone to nose, but pedal to floor

She smelled like cigarettes and wine
And she kept me happy all the time
I know that ain't much of a line
But it's the Gods' own truth
She lives down inside of me still
Rolled up like a twenty dollar bill
She left me alone with these pills
In the last of my youth

Lost on the dry side of town
My memories slowing me down
She shook me and I came around
I came back to life
With nary a mother or dad
She showed me what I never had
The princess of leaves, she gets sad
'Cause I won't take a wife

She smelled like cigarettes and wine
And she kept me happy all the time
I know that ain't much of a line
But it's the Gods' own truth
She lives down inside of me still
Rolled up like a twenty dollar bill
She left me alone with these pills
In the last of my youth

Funny thread in here about Waits and Springsteen. Bit of hating. How clever to notice the similarities! I am certain therefore that yr collection of songs are all unique and different. Listen to the feeling, the lyrics which are poetry! The drummer is superb. The earring! Like it when he slows the tempo and volume down at the beginning. He may have been drinking then but he is still very present, albeit bloated. I have only heard him sober and he is distant in concert, mumbles, says the same damn thing. Love him anyway!

  5. K.... S....

I will never get enough of this song! It’s so beautiful 😍

  6. M.... M....

    He’s amazing

  10. k.... r....

How did it come to be that alternative country sounds more like country than what they say country is now

  12. B.... D....

This is what country music is supposed to sound like.

    P.... ....

Try convincing the fanboys and fangirls of the BS pop music.

  16. J.... W....

At Langerado Festival in 03 Johnny Hickman and I watched the Drive By Truckers do their magic....sweet moment in time with Tammy from Minn.

  17. c.... ....

:-) it is really similar for sure....But Tom Waits wrote it, Bruce just covered it. And quite well IMO. HA HA...

  18. S.... H....

It is hard not to fall in love with him. He is up there with the great singer songwriters.

  24. s.... ....

sing sha la la la la when you're in love with a Jersey Girl......exact same song. start at 2:04 and sing along chorus to jersey girl by Bruce.

  25. J.... C....

Maybe not so much here, the man's ACES! He used to play in Son Volt, seen him live with Farrar about 6 years ago now.... I guess Jay didn't need him, he's perfect in the 400 Watt. Maybe some headphones, I hear him great during the chorus.

  26. D.... M....

Mighty fine, boys.Beautifully crafted.Absolutely one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard.

  27. R.... ....

    @sonofapick

have to disagree, this audience is Jason's and DBT's hometown audience. It's not that we don't know how good it is, respect it, and love it... it's just that we are used to it and are enjoying it and taking it in. I was at this show, upstairs in the balcony. It was during Handy week with a TON of other great music from our area going on.

  28. d.... ....

this song saved my life...that and "no choice in the matter"...thanks jason.. seroiusly...you save lives

  40. B.... A....

Isbell has quickly become one of my favorite songwriters.....having had the pleasure of sharing the stage and backstage with him i can tell y'all with certainty that you're looking at the genuine article.....there is no artifice where he's concerned.........and The Truckers have not been half as good since he left......

  41. m.... ....

This video is f-ing awsome. I can't stop watching it. I can't wait to see you and the band in Los Angels!

  42. T.... S....
