Isakov, Gregory Alan - This Empty Northern Hemisphere Lyrics

Smoke it flies from whisky mouths
Vagabonds walk this suitcase town
Summer left us beckoning
The cottonwoods were all worn out

Night comes fixing on the day
And the universe reigned again
While the wheels roll, it all glows a flickering light

While you were sleeping I was the turning the dials
And I walled up your kingdom with radio wires
And the bells of the choir came in low and rumbling
..aw you should a heard them

Living here in this city on fire, well I’ve been fine
Just dancing drunk above the street
Me the ghost of caroline

And that was me, ya know, calling up above
From the steeples in the church yard

Watch the wheels roll to find another place home

While you were sleeping, you bet that I might
Walk this empty northern hemisphere wide
And the kingdom it came, well it all fell down
It all fell to dust

Isakov, Gregory Alan This Empty Northern Hemisphere Comments
  1. B.... S....

This album literally saved my life. I know it may sound cheesy and corny, but I found it just when I needed something so badly. I was in a bleak darkness with no way out. For the words and music and the man who performed them I am forever grateful

  2. w.... ....

Like a bard who wrote love songs for his beloved, for the day his songs can be heard even in the castle.
The King can look him a fool, but a fool like him can still move people better with his heart.

  3. t.... m....

It's funny I went into the year vowing to never fall for anyone again but it took only 2 months to meet someone and 3 weeks to get my heart broken again. And here I am back again

  4. S.... L....

    This interconnected me. Thank you!

  5. i.... u....

I AM IN LOVE WITH HIM

  6. T.... H....

My heart feels like it's floating on a cloud of melancholy gray, but with sunlight peeking through.

He makes me recognize that it's okay to be poor.

  7. S.... E....

‘Virginia May’ must have been inspired by ‘School House Rock’.

  8. A.... P....

    Minority appeasement succccccccccccccs

  9. A.... P....

    There is no God

  10. A.... I....

    Hipster crap.

    A.... I....

very funny guy, this has 0 hipster touch. Its americana folk, not for narrow minds

    A.... I....

@Joaquin Shang you're free to disagree. But in my view, this is not folk. This is (folk inspired, perhaps) hipster indie. Stuff like this guy, lumineers, dead south, are not folk or bluegrass but indie rock for millenials who don't know what folk and bluegrass are, made by hipsters dressing like little house on the prairie. Go check out Blue Highway, Special Consensus, or the myriad of early 20th century artist who recorded old folk songs. Its fine if people like it, but don't confuse it for folk music.

  11. A.... A....

This is one of the albums my 1.5 month old son listens to. I play music for him all day, and he seems to find this album particularly soothing. I've heard it from beginning to end a number of times. The beauty of it is that you can listen to it intently and appreciate it's poetry OR keep it on as relaxing background music. It's perfect.

  12. J.... L....

Wow! this music is just Life expressed in sound!

  13. J.... M....

Does anyone have a copy of Guru dave. I'm desperate to get a hold of it. Please contact me [email protected]. Your old friend from camp. Wishing u love and positivity always. Never forgot u guys

  14. J.... M....

Camp Raman was a blessing to know u. If anyone else was there ....u inspired me to get a degree in music and become a musician. U, ari fingold ,, Dan schwartz....I miss guru dave...israel....ur kindness to me. Sari, adam ,A. Just want u to know u saved me when times were tough...I was younger and always looked up to u.

I like to play this in the car after I leave my favorite cafe in a little town you have never heard of in the Pacific Northwest. I drive the 10 minutes to my woodworking shop where I sell wooden duck and platypus replicas for just 400 dollars a piece. My girlfriend, Meena, paints them for me with her handmade paints made from flower petals and organic oils and glazes them with tree sap in the forest. I love to sit by the fire and burn fresh pine needles for that smokey winter scent and watch my girlfriend's dancing silhouette, while puffing on an American Spirit.

  16. z.... t....

16:45 (big black car) one of my favorite songs. Or 6:45 ( that moon song)

  19. d.... ....

i can't skip a single song on this album

  20. L.... ....

I can't tell if this album is uplifting or depressing.

    L.... ....

it's neither, that's something i really love about a lot of his music. it doesn't feel happy, nor does it feel sad. but it does feel comfortable, it feels like acceptance, it feels like bittersweet memories, it feels like home

    L.... ....

    neither

  21. D.... M....

Oh easy youth where it was fine to just be.....why did I leave you?

  22. D.... S....

Thank you for this, Gregory Alan Isakov.

  23. K.... ....

This is so calming. Like a balm for the mind at the end of the day.

  24. .... ....

    i love it❤

  25. O.... H....

The self-pitying in this comment section is unreal ... Is no one listening to this music just because it's harmonic and calm?

  26. r.... h....

Don't hit me with vanilla night sky full of stars. I'm that weak :')

  27. .... ....

Wow.. Youtube algorithm unexpectedly brought me here, but this.. .wow... It's.. oh.. wonderful.. I'm melting now..

  28. Y.... ....

With just this album and a candle I think I could withstand even the darkest of nights.

  29. C.... S....

I feel like I’ve found a treasure... Awww thank you for this beauty! This is MUSIC ❤️

  30. D.... J....

I recently went to Isakov's show in Lawrence, Kansas. It was pretty cold that night and, after the show, he stood outside his bus talking to fans (I said hello, complimented his performance and that of his band. got his autograph, and moved on). He was so personable. I looked back and he was shivering from the cold, but still chatting with people who love the man and his music. He is a treasure in a world of meanness and cynicism.

  31. R.... T....

Does anyone else get vibes of Ween influence?

  32. M.... ....

Where have you been all my life sir?

  33. N.... F....

    Thanksssssssssssssssssssssssss

  35. a.... a....

was depressed, now still depressed but i feel serene

  36. A.... S....

Never knew what I was missing until I discovered this.

  37. D.... S....

Sad at first but he is an uplifting dreamer with a magical touch for writing. Voice kept me listening and lyrics made me a fan. Depth in this work which his insight from seeing different continents and the similar but always similar problems we all face can always translate to beautiful rolling songs...gotta love how we find new favs with just a click

  38. E.... ....

I've just been on a youtube recommended journey for music lately, finding a lot of new artists that I've been slowly getting into. And a lot of it, including this album, is making me want to just sleep with the music XD Or relax a lot to them...

  39. E.... ....

Solo quiero decirte Andrea, que eres una persona increíble y que siempre tendrás un compa el cual te puedo apoyar en lo que pueda ...

  40. M.... G....

    What an incredibly talented man

  41. A.... S....

I just realise that some art forms, like this one, are actually candles flickering in an eternal void...and some lost souls are attracted like insects... they gather, they listen, they burn.... the illumination continues 😌

  42. t.... ....

    hello reddit

  43. W.... ....

This album is fucking transcendent, a whole-soul experience

  46. U.... ....

THis is a very special music. Greetings from Iran

  47. J.... C....

This album is hands down the most influential album I’ve experienced. Freshman year of college I bought this album and burned it to a disc and still to this day have it in my 6-disc changer in my car.

I have so many memories founded on these songs, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to truly thank GAI for the impact he’s had on my life.

    Just speechless.

  48. A.... B....

i was lacking understanding of others until i fall on this album i guess isakov was already understanding us all before we even know it that can fill the gap <3

  52. C.... D....

His Songs make feel somewhat lonely and happy at the sametime. It's like being alone in a grassland in a summernight, doing nothing and hust starring at the sky and feel the night summer breeze

We're fortunate every generation supplies talented people that help us through bad times. 50 years ago James Taylor did it for me. I hope you get through this challenging time quickly and stronger for the experience.

They remind me of Band of Horses. I love your music Gregory❤❤☺☺😋😋🙏🙏

    H.... B....

Great music from both of em!

  70. K.... B....

In Big Black Car, shouldn't the lyrics be 'plain Jane' instead of 'plane Jane?'

  71. b.... h....

nice music , but kind of meh at the same time... none of the songs really stands out

  72. S.... Z....

every note, banjo, breaks my heart, makes me emotional. amazing, amazing, amazing tenderness.
    Something deep here.
Something deep that only folk can offer.

    S.... Z....

Indie folk. Folk sounds more country.

  73. V.... D....

One step at a time, we'll get there.

  74. M.... G....

1+1=3, the emptiness is something, that ...that binds the universe, the love, the ethereal, love this ALBUM✌😁✌

  75. J.... C....

Its my first time listening to isakovs music and its great such a very grest songs he have

  76. J.... J....

I suggest just to get rid of the thumb down button. If you don't like it, just don't listen and look for something else but don't hit the thumb down button. It's so pathetic!

  77. J.... S....

Arguably in the top 5 albums this century.

  84. H.... H....

    so lost from reality

  85. B.... D....

I've enjoyed watching him and Brandi Carlile for so many years before the entire world was suddenly graced by her magical voice, and love her contributing vocals to GAI's music. They are amazing, if you ever get the opportunity to see them live together, treat yourselves to that beautiful experience.

  86. J.... D....

This album is best among his all other outer worldly albums. The album feels so earthy and that too coming from man who genuinely stay close to his earthly elements. Literally he loves soil and I could feel that earthiness in his songs as well. An extraordinary personality and a genius of a musician. I cant stay away from listening to his music......Its never boring or exhaustive.

    J.... D....

Started listening to this back in 2014. Going thru some tough times and this album and the other 2 here on YT kept my spirits up. I even tried to get other people to listen to GAI, but really, most people today listen to garbage.

    J.... D....

@2nd_snideelf Totaly agree with you bro. I am also trying to make him popular.

  87. J.... S....

words simply can't describe how much I love this album

  88. R.... H....

I want to go on a long road trip with someone, with him, Passenger, The Tallest Man On Earth, Bon Iver, and Lord Huron playing the whole time.

    R.... H....

    And The Lumineers

    R.... H....

Passenger is such an underrated band. One of my favorites!

  89. C.... S....

His music makes me want to cry and smile all at the same time

    C.... S....

Christina Spyro that is the most perfect way of describing this artist and his music

  90. C.... S....

Does anyone know what genre this is (probably other than alternative cuz I feel like everything is considered alt)

    C.... S....

    folk music

    C.... S....

    alt-country-folk

    C.... S....

Indie folk. Alt is no longer a good word to use. Real folk music sounds more country.

    C.... S....

Indie folk. Alt is not a good word. Real folk sounds more country.

  91. C.... S....

I love listening to him with headphones in looking out the train window at the world passing me by

  92. A.... P....

The night breathes a foreign blanket
So immense you could mistake it for being right in front of your face
    Who’s to say it isn’t?

These deadly stars of eons past are still burning bright
    Flickering like a candlelit room
I stretch my arms against the ceiling terrified I might touch something

So I compulsively clutch the grass to keep from falling up
Subconsciously keeping an eye on the only star in the sky
If it gets any bigger it might whisk us away like plumes of white off a dandelion

Glued to the ground watching the stars slowly appear
I watch in awe at their majesty in hopes my reverence pleases them
They grow larger everyday, coming for me, coming for us all

In this world I am a dandelion
    Waiting to be plucked
My delicate petals to be scattered in the wind

We are all flowers flying on borrowed air
Pulled by the gravity of something bigger that doesn’t know we exist
Running out of fuel, no stranger to lost time

    Fearing we may never land
