Iron & Wine - History Of Lovers Lyrics
Louise only got from me innocent poetry
Although she played to not listen
But still I can hear myself speak as if no one else
Ever could offer the same
Although so foolish and willing
I said Babe I can picture you bend as if wanting to
Bow as the curtain goes down
Coddle some men, they'll remember you bitterly
Fuck 'em, they'll come back for more
I asked my Louise would she leave and so cripple me
Then came a knock at the door
"I came for my woman", he came with a razor blade
I hope that she's happy I'm blamed for the death of
A man who would take her from me
Some they saw in me innocent poetry
Some, some say they'll never be certain
But still it's been written, a history of lovers
Given and taken in ink
Coddle some men, they'll remember you fittingly
Cut 'em, they'll come back for more
I asked my Louise would she leave and so cripple me
Then came the knock at the door
Louise came to rescue me, missing the irony
Blood made her heart change its beating
I hope that she's happy I'm blamed for the death of
The man she found better than me

All the comments from a year ago talking about 7k hits...sitting here looking at almost 74k now :P
Probably my favorite use of a lap steel.
sounds a bit like heros by bowie
I just thought that recently
this has got a touch of talking heads about it and i love it
Does any body hear Dan Fogelberg in this?
Yes, thought it might have been a tune that I never heard from him.
hey everyone, please take a moment to check out my channel. Your support is much appreciated. Thanks all!
Listening to this again, it is not so much the Tom Petty groove as it mirrors the production on that track done by ELO's Jeff Lynne. His work with George Harrison around the same time had a similar quality. Still loving this song, though.
I saw something on DA where someone paired a kataaang picture with the lyrics to the beginning of this song, and it was like the best thing ever.
Iron and wine did half of the work, though XD
The melody is a fairly straight lift from "Where Were You When I Needed You" by The Grass Roots (with a quick phrase from "Obla-Di Obla-Da"), grafted onto the rhythm track of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down."
Which is a pleasant combo, all in all, and I will now proceed to duly purchase the track.
I will have a Samuel Beam beard if its the last thing I do
This song makes me dance :)
@CollarboneOfAHare
*you're
Grrrr...
@JDrevolver66
I've just noticed this today! Well observed. The other song your referring to is Charlene Duncan's 'I've Never Been To Me'
Clearly the fullest and most sophisticated thing calexico has ever done. And yet! only 7K hits. What a sadness.
Cool (and fractured) song. tho the melody is verrrry similar to Belle & Sebastian's "Take your carriage clock and shove it", which is itself nicked from some MOR song from the 80s.
This is such a great song it doesnt need a video clip
@anitaevans
There was a video of them playing this together on The Late Show at one point, as I remember. Seems to have vanished since though which is a shame.
This is such a beautiful song, too bad there isn't a videoclip for it. <3
