Iron Maiden - Isle Of Avalon Lyrics

I can hear them floating on the wind
Immortal souls their weeping saddens me
Mother earth you know your time is near
Awaken lust the seed is sown and reaped

Through the western isle I hear the dead awaken
Rising slowing to the court of Avalon
The cauldron of the head of Annwyn laced with envy
Dark around its edge with pearl and destiny

All my days I've waited for the sign
The one that brings me closer to isle of Avalon
I can feel the power flowing through my veins
My heart is beating louder, close to Avalon

I can hear you, can you hear me?
I can feel you, can't you feel me?

Fertility Mother Goddess
Celebration, sow the seeds of the born
The fruit of her body laden
Through the corn doll
You will pray for them all
The image of Mother Goddess
Lying dormant, in the eyes of the dead
The sheaf of the corn is broken
End the harvest
Throw the dead on the pyre

I hear her crying the tears of an angel
The voices I hear in my head
Blessed the fruits are the corn of the earth
Mother earth holy blood of the dead

Mother earth I can hear you
Sacrifice, now united

Rising levels of the tidal lakes protect them
Keepers of the goddess in the underworld
Holding powers of the mystics, deep inside them
nineteen maidens, guardians of the otherworld
Mortal conflict born of Celtic legend
That apart from seven, non-returned from Avalon

Mother earth I can feel you
My rebirth now completed

Fertility mother goddess
Celebration, sow the seeds of the born
The fruits of her body laden
Through the corn doll
You will pray for them all
The image of mother goddess
Lying dormant, in the eyes of the dead
The sheaf of the corn is broken
End the harvest, throw the dead on the pyre

To have the belief of others
Looking for the Isle to show them a sign
Fertility of all mothers
Stood in silence
Waiting now for their turn

The gateway to Avalon
The island where the souls of the dead are reborn
Brought here to die and be transferred into the earth
And then for rebirth

I hear her crying the tears of an angel
The voices I hear in my head
Blessed the fruits are the corn of the earth
Mother earth holy blood of the dead

The water in rivers and rhymes rises quickly
Are flowing and flooding the land
The sea shall return once again just to hide them
Lost souls on the Isle of the dead

Once again Maiden presents a progressive masterpiece, their brilliance and supremecy is clearly shown, in every note, every word of the lyrics.....they don´t produce classics anymore, they produce IMMORTALS......

  8. s.... w....

Theese guys haven´t only set the bar for metal music....they ARE the bar...and NO ONE else even comes close to this Legendary band.......in their progressive music they are untouchable....

  9. s.... w....

The AWESOMENESS of this band......NO other bands creates music, guitar harmonies, phrasing, solos and riffs, gorgeous intros and outros, thought provocative lyrics, and breathtaking performances like Maiden......NONE....

  10. L.... E....

How this song was not played live during the Final Frontier tour is a mystery to me. One of their absolute best songs after Bruce came back.

  11. N.... M....

With all the debate and controversy about the "newer" Maiden (post 7th Son) it really comes down to one simple fact -- the songs simply aren't as good. It's like they ran out of inspiration and are just cannibalizing themselves to come up with new material and changing a little something here to make it sound different. It's kinda like the old stuff -- just not as good. How many ways can we mix up Em, C, D, with an occasional G and Am! Can't think of a bridge? Go into a gallop! It's worked before -- several dozen times. They're also depending on Gers to contribute more songs and he's a basic blues/rock and roller. The band has lost their heart. The formula's gone stale. They're tired. They're still great players and Bruce can still sing and they still put on a great show. But go watch a video of them from 1985 and you'll get what I'm talking about. No one was better.

    N.... M....

Nelson Montana personally I think they have evolved and matured in a fantastic way...maybe because I´m a quite recent fan, maybe not, but to me they have more melodic power than ever, their music have become more complexed, captivating, like symphonies really, theese long, brooding progressive songs, theese slow, gentle intros and outros that adds a certain magic to the songs, their deep, thought provoking lyrics.....in spite of being a recent fan, or maybe because of it, I can honestly say that every single album they ever made contains songs that grabs your heart and soul instantly and never let it go, some more, some less but through their entire career they have given us incredible, unforgettable, aswell as outstanding music and to be honest, they still do......as Janick´s my favourite in the band, as composer aswell as guitarist and performer it´s understandable that they are depending on him, at least eight of my all time favourites are composed by this incredible guy.......

  12. C.... B....

This song is actually quite scary. Mostly down to Bruce's whisper singing and the wind in the background.

  13. E.... D....

By far, this is the most underrated song of Iron Maiden.

    E.... D....

EX DI also totally unknown to many....why so many think of this album as " average at best " is way beyond my understanding....the entire album is a masterpiece, high level in composing, by any standard....pure gold...

  14. S.... N....

Starblind is the best song on this album.

    S.... N....

@susanne williamsson if you like Maiden so much we should meet..😉😉

    S.... N....

@Szabolcs Nagy why not ?? The question is, where ???

    S.... N....

@susanne williamsson I live in Hamilton, Ontario

    S.... N....

@Szabolcs Nagy well, there´s only one problem, I live in Sweden....a different continent on so many levels, but seriously I´m going to be in Chile in october to see Maiden again....maybe then if you´r going there, or maybe I can take a visit to Ontario on my way home.....

    S.... N....

@susanne williamsson sure, you're always welcome at my place.

  15. S.... W....

I love this song. The solo is like floating around an ethereal sublime bliss cloud of magnificence. Music porn. Guitar porn. <3

  16. s.... w....

An IMMORTAL masterpiece......lyrically aswell as musically a breathtaking proof of their genius and overwhelming powers to create incredible music, transforming words and sequences of notes to sheer beauty and perfection....

  17. s.... w....

SUPERB musicianship, a brilliant Golden Gem from their incredible album Final Frontier....I don´t understand why so many find this particular album so disappointing...it´s a downright masterpiece album, very high level of composing in any genre, Iron Maiden, undisputed masters of their craft.....often copied, NEVER matched !!!

  18. L.... ....

The intro reminds me of Hypnotize from System of a Down

  19. A.... F....

Man, Im 42 years old, my first album that I bought was Seventh Son..but Final Frontier rocks!

    A.... F....

    weakest album since no prayeres

  20. C.... A....

This is Maiden's Kashmir, shades of Mighty Zeppelin (compliment by the way)

  21. A.... P....

    3:39-4:00 Paschendale??

    A.... P....

    ¡¡No!!

  22. R.... A....

    Putz que decadencia...

  23. A.... 5....

4:10 that 7/8 section is one of maiden's sweetest moments ever. Such a progressive track 😍

  24. M.... ....

I can hear you, can you hear me?...
    Such a beautiful song
    Just beautiful

  25. G.... R....

fantastic song from a lackluster album!

  26. F.... R....

lesson of fruits on. a corner the earth engelhearts grind our souls from behind

  27. P.... M....

im so proud to be British

    P.... M....

Paul Mills you should, because WHAT you have given the world in music is simply undescrible....from the early sixties and onwards prooves the passion and fascination in extremly good music....we can only salute and bow in your honour, where had we been without it ???

  28. T.... F....

I love Adrian's solo on this song.

  29. l.... ....

I have the full studio release catalogue from Maiden...but for lazy reasons held off on this one and Book of Souls...however, I recently purchased both...I been giving Final Frontier  lots of play...I love this song....Maiden forever...NEVER SURRENDER!!  \m/ (◣_◢) \m/

  30. L.... A....

Call me crazy but The Final Frontier is one of Maiden's greatest work, top 5 IMO!

    L.... A....

Luis Angel Gonzalez you´r definitely NOT crazy, I´m with you ALL the way.....Final Frontier is a MASTERPIECE album ...

  31. D.... S....

this is the same riff from "no more lies" tf

  32. P.... R....

Megaman 4 - Dive Man Theme

  33. L.... A....

I think The Final Frontier and Dance of Death are among Maiden's finest albums. They blend the old school heavy sound and energy with an innovative, prog-friendly technique, avoiding the sense of monotony. And TFF is simply my favorite album, each song is unique and epic itself, only Dance of Death and Powerslave can compare, I think

  34. S.... R....

    Adrian  Smith absolute genius

  35. s.... ....

Honestly, I like that Maiden has gotten more progressive over time...

  36. C.... X....

wow 7 years ago how time fly,s

  37. G.... T....

Iron Maiden is love. Iron Maiden is life 😍

  38. N.... ....

    8:21 dive man :v

  39. R.... S....

4:17 it reminds me of tool, i now has one music that contains this chords

  40. d.... b....

I am so glad Iron Maiden decided to be a six-piece band upon the return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith back in 1999. All Iron Maiden albums during this era have a larger than life feel to them, an epic feeling. My ears are happy

    d.... b....

Dude plus the live concerts if you get lucky enough to go to one. It's amazing. I love what they do with three guitars.

    d.... b....

david bennett to make Janick a member was the best thing they ever did, he contributed tremendousley with his outstanding composing, brilliant guitarplaying and he´s the most charismatic and superior performer I´ve EVER seen, he IS the show !!

  41. T.... ....

This is the one song i don't like. The man who would be king grew on me and the franticnes of the talisman fits with the tone.

    T.... ....

youre stupid then this song is a masterpeice

    T.... ....

The songs I like the least (although I still like them a bit) are Coming Home, Mother Of Mercy and The Man Who Would Be King (maybe this is the one I like most out of the three), the other ones, I like them a lot.

  42. H.... G....

some of maiden new staff is much better than the older songs this final Frontier for me is a masterpiece as well as the book of souls and I also consider that this one is one of the best maidens albums ever!!

    H.... G....

    Humberto Gomez me too

  43. S.... K....

ΕΠΟΣ!! (EPOS in Greek is EPIC)!!!!!No words to describe this song.

    S.... K....

    σωστος.........

    S.... K....

Maybe a progressive piece of art, it´s certainly spellbinding and very high level of composing, by any standard !!

    S.... K....

yes very mysterius.....out of this world.

    S.... K....

    Ναι είναι φοβερό 😁😊😊😊

    S.... K....

    μαγεια φιλε μου.....

  44. A.... F....

Epic, this album is a real masterpiece

    A.... F....

Alessandro Frioli definitely a masterpiece.....just unbelievable....

  45. w.... ....

it is a fucking miracle that we get music like this from a band that formed in the late 70s and made their bones in the early 80s well into the 2010s. going to appreciate this while it lasts.

    what a fucking band.

  46. E.... ....

This song makes me an Iron Maiden's fan :)

    E.... ....

Emmanuel Marcial Not a go to Iron Maiden song that would make fans out of new listeners, but definitely one that would DEFINITELY do it!

Seriously this song is my favorite out of the entire album.

  47. S.... B....

Maiden do "art-metal" and it fucking kicks ass!!!

  48. A.... J....

    my names Avalon :)

    A.... J....

Your parents must be the coolest ! :)

    A.... J....

Avalon Johnston My name Rocco, Rocco siffredi.

    A.... J....

@Luis Angel Gonzalez Oh man I love Led Zeppelin and especially this song

    A.... J....

ZFF-NOKOS Definitely, one of the greats. I was making a reference from Zeppelin's song "The Battle of Evermore" which in one fragment of the chorus says: "I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon" Maiden are probably referencing Zeppelin in this song!

    A.... J....

    >insert generic double entendre about your "Isle"
Seriously though, I was rather surprised no one had made such an attempt in the responses so far.

  49. g.... ....

so fucking epic song that this still keeps giving me shivers after propably thousands of listening times.

  50. M.... B....

    +praapje you're right dude

  51. p.... ....

Getting tired of some old school Maiden fans complaining about their new stuff. Sure it may not be their cup of tea, but you cannot deny their musicianship. The same with prog purists who cannot seem to look further than "true" prog. Music can be good and exciting no matter what genre. I like the 80's maiden as well as the new. I would say equally it's just a different style. Though Maiden always had a mild progressive streak in them; with age it just seems to come to the fore. I find this a wonderful song from a truly great album, although not perfect. They just keep producing good stuff. Amazing.

    p.... ....

Dude maiden is in a league of their own, theyre so musically gifted, sure their newer stuff sounds different, but i find myself listening to it more than the older jams. Best band everrr

    p.... ....

Yums absolutely, no one else even comes close.....

    p.... ....

I gather more the old ones, exactly with Bruce's era (Iron Maiden and Killers was nice) but the best ones for me are; The Number Of The Beast, Piece Of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere In Time, Seven Son Of The Seven Son, Fear Of The Dark... but the rest of albums still a totally Masterpiece, like everything they do

    p.... ....

@Arturo Perez since I´m a quite recent fan, maybe not, my ranking is quite different.....nr.1 will always be the phenomenal AMOLAD, closely followed by BNW, SIT, and fighting for nr.4 are Final Frontier and yes X-Factor....but every single album they ever made includes songs that grabs your heart and soul instantly, and never let it go.....

    p.... ....

i thnk from first album the prog was established, phantom of the opera is prog, to tame a land, rime, alexander, infinite dreams... they were prog from day 1 and those who say otherwise have no idea what they are talking about. even dream theatre played live a full maiden album

  52. C.... ....

This song and "Starblind" are my favorite songs off of this album. I love the slow build-up and the explosive chorus. "The Great Unknown" kind of reminds me of this song with the chorus.

    C.... ....

great you notice the "tension build" on this song...its really incredible!!!

    C.... ....

My favorites on this album are this one and Mother of Mercy

    C.... ....

Check out the rock epic 2112 by Rush released in 1976.
It's a 20ish minute long, 7 part story about a man who rediscovers music in an "Equilibrium" style dystopian future, and upon showing his discovery to the government's leaders (calling themselves "Priests"), they rebuff him telling him music has no part in their great plan.
It's an AMAZING creation, in my opinion, and if you haven't heard it before, it's worth a full listen through.

  53. b.... ....

    5.15 - 5.35 , i can hear possibly a rush influence ??

    b.... ....

Could be Rush, also I've heard Adrian was pretty much into Joe Satriani around the time of making this album.. who knows

  54. b.... ....

love these longer songs perfect when driving

    b.... ....

    brucedickinson12 FAST VERY FAST

    b.... ....

brucedickinson12 you don´t have to be driving.......theese song are perfect whatever you´r doing......

    b.... ....

@Hermano Antonio Maybe so, who knows....

  55. R.... S....

That shows how a simple 7/8 can make everything really tasty

  56. d.... m....

this song and eldorado kick ass yes verry weird time signaturesthat will challenge all musician but thats fun to discover what you can play have fun rocking out its all a matter of youre own skills and taste all songs dont have to blugend you to death to be good

  57. L.... G....

"I hear her crying, the tears of an angel..."

  58. n.... ....

Can anyone explain me the legend of the Avalon described in this song please? I don't understand it quite well :)

    n.... ....

It's too long to explain in a reply. It's based on Arthurian legend from King Arthur. Arthur's sword "Excalibur" was forged on Avalon. It goes pretty deep in Celtic legend. It comes from the Welsh word "Afallon" meaning "apples". But, there were old English pagan things ongoing on the Isle of Avalon ("Afallon").

    n.... ....

+Stinger4186 Oh, I've heard of King Arthur and Excalibur mate, but, what I didn't really understand is- what are those nineteen maidens about? Godess of the other world? And stuff like that :) Thanks for the reply.

    n.... ....

    +nolejd50
Well, I'm not sure about the significance of the maidens nor the godess of the underworld, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with certain crafts of the Druids and that associated with Arthurian legend from old Celtic lore

  59. T.... O....

    Awesome, very unique intro!!!

  60. P.... N....

7:23 this riff reminds me of another (Maiden?) song. Anyone who can help?

    P.... N....

Nevermind. The same riff is used in No More Lies from Dance Of Death

    P.... N....

    Some parts from "Panschendale"

    P.... N....

+pariskotsaros same here man...I've searched for this part for months:D

  61. S.... B....

Hats off  to the creator of this great band, Steve Harris and his troopers!!!! Steve is the boss!!!!!!!!

  62. X.... D....

Can't wait until Book of Souls to release in September

  63. J.... H....

That riff at 7:25 gets me everytime. Amazing.

  64. d.... ....

With The Alchemist, the best song of this album.

  65. S.... O....

This is a fantastic masterpiece. Very addictive. Not as much as Flight of Icarus, but comes close. I wish the lyrics had some more "AVALON" words. It sounds awesome to hear Bruce saying it.

  66. d.... q....

One short time of the intro... Mariner are YOU this?

  67. C.... P....

    It remembers me paschendale👍👍

  68. P.... F....

    Iron Maiden is amazing!

  69. S.... C....

    What a chorus guys!

    S.... C....

wkr64691 A live performance could give new life to this great tune!

    S.... C....

What's even more impressive is that Bruce was 50 years old back then and still has that amazing voice. I don't think anyone can argue that he is one the greats in metal, imo he's up there at the top with Dio.

    S.... C....

I know I'm responding late, but this has to be one of my favorite choruses ever

    S.... C....

the song is a masterpiece, nothing more, nothing less.....

  70. A.... |....

    2:50 <3

  71. w.... ....

The last 3 minutes of this song are so epic that I replay them almost every time I listen to it.

  72. r.... ....

4:10-5:34 always reminds me of Dream Theater, I think both bands has had a influence on each other, DT getting ideas from albums like SSOASS and IM listening to DT in the 2000s.

Anyway, UP THE IRONS from Finland!

    r.... ....

@DJalaviivaLibor This song has not DT influence. There is nothing wrong in getting inspiration from a younger band and I think the guys in Maiden will readily acknowledge that. But this is their 70s prog rock influences coming out in these songs.

    r.... ....

@Saqib Saqib Yeah that's probably how it is

    r.... ....

    @DJalaviivaLibor :)

    r.... ....

They Definitely respect Dream Theater as Dream Theater respects them. My two favorite bands.

  73. M.... P....

    4:12 Epic!

    M.... P....

Max Power Mr Harris mate. .God of Metal .

  74. A.... R....

I'm a big iron maiden fan, but for the most part, this song is so boring.

    A.... R....

    Just don't listen to it

    A.... R....

I'm just stating a simple fact. And yes, I said FACT. Or at least it's a fact to me.

    A.... R....

@Alex Ritter It can´t be a fact, if it doesn´t apply to everyone, i believe. Thats what i´ve been told, at least.

    A.... R....

+Anonym Johnny It's a fact because he finds it boring. It is also a fact that you (seemingly) do not find it boring.

  75. B.... J....

I can hear them floating on the wind,
immortal souls, their weeping saddens me.
Mother Earth, you know your time is near.
Awaken lust, the seed is sown and reaped.

Through the western isle I hear the dead awaken,
rising slowly to the court of Avalon.
The cauldron of the head of Annwyn laced with envy,
dark around its edge with pearl and destiny.

    B.... J....

yes ... your word ... juevel tee i need now to get started ,, best best :)

  76. B.... U....

PURE PROG....simply BRILLIANT....they always had prog in them....and every album since POWERSLAVE it has moved more to the forefront....its funny..i LOVE prog..like YES Crimson Floyd ELP etc...but METAL is my favourite...and PROG fans dont see MAIDEN as prog..but METAL fans that Love prog like me DO!  STRICTLY PROG fans are very very very stubborn andsnobby though!

  77. S.... M....

    Love it

  78. E.... ....

Same whiny bullshit as most of their new stuff since BNW. Stop it Maiden, you suck these days. Stop milking your legacy before fans lose all respect for you. No melody, variations or real music like your old stuff. This is pure hogwash.

    E.... ....

No melody? No variation? Maiden is more melodic now than in the 80's and they are way more variable. There is way more different time signatures and rhythms than in their earlier albums. I have no problem with people liking the old Maiden more, but don't talk bullshit.

    E.... ....

@harveydents 1 out of 1 millon? When The Final Frontier was realesed it made it to number 1 in 28 countries.. Source? On Board Flight 666 (The book) .

    E.... ....

    @hazzpolo
u must b deaf or dumb or poser maiden fans who only know the greatest hits

    E.... ....

(really guys? dont respond to trolls)

    E.... ....

    @*****
Yes,but he is posting it to get a negative response and stir up negativity, aka trolling.

That would be like going into a forum thread about the top 5 Porsches and saying that everything Porsche ever made is terrible.

  79. c.... ....

the start is similar to seventh son of a seventh son

  80. M.... C....

    agreed!

  81. K.... ....

of course its awesome its MAIDEN!!!!!

  82. d.... a....

    Powerslave

  83. G.... L....

Wish they played this song at the Battle of San Bernardino

  84. K.... ....

just out of curiosity what is ur fav maiden album?

    K.... ....

X-death I can't choose between number of the beast, piece of mind, powerslave, somewhere in time, seventh son, fear of the dark, brave new world, final frontier, and book of souls.

  85. K.... ....

to each their own. i like DOD so i say its their best.

  86. M.... ....

No, Dance of Death is nopt even arguably their best. They have plenty that are certainly better than DOD.

  87. R.... V....

A bit proggy, but still awesome!.

  88. K.... ....

dont be ashamed while dance of death is my fav album (arguably maidens best) this is an AMAZING album espicially this song

  89. d.... ....

    Gotta love it!

  90. w.... ....

"the gateway to avalon, the island where the souls of dead are reborn, brought here to die and be transferred into the earth and then for rebirth," this over the guitar melody: one of maiden's finest hours.

  91. s.... ....

    Up the Irons from Croatia

  92. A.... 2....

We should send them "Out Of The Silent Planet" and "Satellite 15"

  93. .... ....

If there are any aliens out there they will come and kill us all for sending those kind of stuff :D :D sometimes i just look and think this retards have so much money and have such good lives and some children in Africa and other places starve to death, just unfair man. I don't have an idea what this has to do with maiden but, just had to say that and your comment was something that provoked me to do it. XD :D

  94. T.... ....

4:16 - Harris takes the helm, shit breaks loose...

  95. M.... C....

Why in the world would that make you ashamed? You got into them didn't you? Why does it matter which one got you into the band?

  96. M.... ....

the geniuses at nasa know about space, but they dont know what music is!

  97. f.... ....

I'm ashamed to say it, but this album actually got me into Iron Maiden.

  98. M.... O....

Bring me Home Don't need this world rock n roll
