Iris DeMent - The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home Lyrics

Come along my dear, the time's growin' near
We'll have to walk down where the field is overgrown
Consumption's claimed his life and we dare not miss the sight
Of the train carrying Jimmie Rodgers home

We'd some hard times these last few years
Lost the farm, almost lost our spirits, too
But it's the strangest thing, when we heard that man sing
We knew somehow we'd make it through

I can hear that whistle blow, that old train's a-movin' slow
Sounds like he's cryin' for the singin' brakeman, too
Back to the sunny south he'll go, and he'll never roam no more
Here's the train, oh hold me close, oh sweetheart do

Come here my little son and let me lift you up
I want you to remember this day when you are grown
How your mama and your dad were so proud and so sad
Watchin' the train carrying Jimmie Rodgers home

I can hear that whistle blow, that old train's a-movin' slow
Sounds like he's cryin' for the singin' brakeman, too
Back to the sunny south he'll go, and he'll never roam no more
Here's the train, oh hold me close, oh sweetheart do

somebody lower that mic for her

Love the way Iris's voice softens in the minor chords then really accentuates the 7ths, like some 1920s/1930s delta blues singer

  6. V.... S....

A mournful sound for sure carries you away

Lovely to hear the wonderful old-timey voiced lovely Iris DeMent performing this song that her amazing husband Greg Brown wrote and recorded 1984. It's as if he, and Iris, were there so long ago after The Singing Brakeman Jimmie Rodgers died oh so young, age 35, of tuberculosis in.1933. "Here comes the train, oh hold me close, oh sweetheart, do."

That voice although it grew up in California, Is pure Northeast Arkansas.

Maybe this gets to me so much because I was "so proud and so sad" seeing the massive affection in which my Dad was held when we buried him in January. Who can say what touches us about a song ? All I can say is, Iris's songs and singing touch me so deeply. Thanks once again Iris

Simply one of the greatest songs of all time (and performance come to that). Timeless, which is probably greatest accolade you can pay to any song

  10. e.... ....

This is greatness. Not on any Iris album, I come back to this time and time again. So economical - could have been written in the 1920s, but universally applicable. Portrait of family paying homage is so touching

I've never heard Greg Brown sing this song of his, but his wife, Iris Dement seems to have the definitive version of it. Her voice is pefect for it.

Greg's version was the first and still the best, tho I do like the way Iris guts it out

Absolute undiluted class - what a haunting and heartfelt song, composed by Greg Brown and taken into another stratosphere by Iris. Have rarely seen a vocalist inhabit a song as fully as Iris - up there with Dylan, Janis Joplin and (watch this space) Lydia Rodgers from the Secret Sisters in that respect. Awe inspiring
