It's not a braid, it's a reference to DNA and ancient religious philosophies that believe the helix represents the innate ability to create in both god and all Carbon based beings. That ability in humanity exists in the union of man and woman which is symbolized by DNA's double helix. google "divine serpent". Given the religious symbols used on the album cover art, my bet is that the "braid" you are talking about is supposed to represent the divine serpent/ double helix.

If I had to take a stab at it, I'd say, "Yeah, if it's right to pick a fight, we're
Fingers in a sugar bowl," is a metaphor. So if it's right to do actions such as starting fights (swinging back around to "We're incomplete and infantine, even...") then the subjects are in the right place. Children cramming fingers in a sugar bowl is silly and infantile to do because it's unhealthy and messy. Just like picking a fight. It fits with the theme of trial and error that he seems to express in this piece of work.

I was gonna tell that dude what it meant but he asked that 3 years ago, so i didn't bother.....lol.........But yeah i agree and thought the same for sometime, glad you posted it....

This is personally my favorite off the album, it has that near perfect mix of thrilling and melancholic going on, one of those traits that Incubus does so well with.

Can people please stop saying mike wrote dirks parts. They said in an interview that each member would usually fool around with other instruments all the time and if they made something that sounded cool they would use it. I swear people blow up that rumor just so Ben has another leg to stand on in arguments.

@italia10588 Technically perhaps, but Mike wrote a lot of the bass lines for Dirk.

More recently, Ben has demonstrated that he can slap just fine too. It just isn't his style (or the band's anymore).

@RAVENakaR I mean, I actually love their latest album, which I vehemently hated at first, but a return to the more Ingram view sound would be amazing. I dont think its possible without Alex though. He is miles better technically and creatively then Ben.

Yo, so the phrase, "fingers in a sugar bowl" means you are doing something you shouldn't be doing. So I'm thinking if you replace the meaning with its phrase you get, "If it's right to pick a fight, we're doing what we shouldn't be doing" ,but it's all up to interpretation.

i fuckin love the name of this song! diamonds and coal, although on initial instinct might not seem to be interconnected, are so intertwined into our economy and social status' that its almost serendipitous!

Incubus is the only band that i can think of that has the ability to write songs that grow on you. In 2006 I would never have thought that I would dig this album but here i stand today in love with it!!!!
