I remember around 2005-2010ish, listening to Fleet Foxes, thinking where have all the important bands gone with something real to say?? My conclusion was that we'd had it all (relatively) easy since the 90's and that's why people were singing about log cabins. What we needed was some crazy shit to happen for people to rebel against thus creating meaningful music. I didn't envisage the credit crunch, Nigel Farage, the rise of the alt-right, metoo, twitter, Donald Trump, Isis, Brexit and Boris Johnson.. But you're all welcome.

Sorry to be a smartass here, but the endgame is not to transform masculinity but to abolish it.
If you say "real men cry", "real men buckle their seatbelts" or whatever, you are still invoking the power of the gender role to bend people to your will. It may be possible to make the gender expectations in masculinity more positive, but it will still be an impossible standard, with all that aspire to it feeling life failures, with men policing the behavior of other men to adhere to it and so on. There is no "real masculinity" that should replace the current model of masculinity. We should instead remove this model of gendered coercion entirely.

I think this is one of the biggest deals with genre roles nowadays. Women are fighting for equality and, at the same time, men's role asks for a new change. What does BEING A MAN mean? What does MASCULINITY stand for? What makes a man?

The military isn't peak masculinity. Discipline and competence are peak masculinity and the military is based on those ideas. I'm not military man but I do work around a lot of military personnel. Nobody just does what they're told in a healthy robust military environment. There is a lot of back and forth about making the best decisions. You sound like a 12 year old communist with a beret who read a book one time.

I am a pacifist. With that said, I know some amazing veterans who are taking the discipline they learned in the Army and putting it towards positive work in my community. They are community-oriented, yet strong independent thinkers. So, in our efforts to oppose the military industrial complex, let's not alienate our veteran friends - their knowledge and understanding is a great asset.
