IDLES - Samaritans Lyrics

Man up, sit down
Chin up, pipe down
Socks up, don't cry
Drink up, just lie
Grow some balls, he said
Grow some balls
Man up, sit down
Chin up, pipe down
Socks up, don't cry
Drink up, don't whine
Grow some balls, he said
Grow some balls

The mask of masculinity
Is a mask, a mask that's wearing me
The mask, the mask, the mask

I'm a real boy, boy, and I cry
I love myself and I want to try
This is why you never see your father cry
This is why you never see your father cry
This is why you never see your father

Man up, sit down
Chin up, pipe down
Socks up, don't cry
Drink up, just lie
Grow some balls, he said
Grow some balls
Man up, sit down
Chin up, pipe down
Socks up, don't cry
Drink up, don't whine
Grow some balls, he said
Grow some balls

The mask of masculinity
Is a mask, a mask that's wearing me
The mask, the mask, the mask

I'm a real boy, boy and I cry
I love myself and I want to try
This is why you never see your father cry
This is why you never see your father cry
This is why you never see your father

I kissed a boy and I liked it
Man up, sit down
Chin up, pipe down
Socks up, don't cry
Drink up, don't whine
This is why, this is why, this is why
This is why, this is why, this is why

IDLES Samaritans Comments
  1. J.... F....

The mask of masculinity... Why come I never heard that til now? GENIUS

  2. D.... G....

Unpopular opinion: IDLES are the same level and just as important as Rage Against The Machine

  3. F.... ....

Let's not be so restrictive about love. In some things we're less progressive than the ancient Greeks ffs. I'm a straight white male but I want to be able to hold hands with my guy friends without anyone giving me shit about it. And sometimes I just want to cuddle/sleep in the same bed with a bunch of guys simply because they are my homies and I love them. Deal with it. ;-)

  4. S.... S....

My dad can beat up your dad.

  5. L.... S....

    This is relevant

  6. T.... O....

Another band that has a great message in their music, too bad that its another case of (if you read the comments below) dumbass hipsters trying to pretend they get the message while they instead just talk about how they hate men

  7. Z.... L....

    Wish everyone could hear this

  8. g.... ....

Liberals: White men need to stop being so repressed and start honestly talking about their feelings and emotions

Men: We're deeply frustrated by a society that constantly seems to be emasculating and undermining us while delegitimising any complaints we have because of "privileges" that do nothing to reduce the frustration of living in isolating, sedentary and self destructive culture increasingly devoid of age-old sources of happiness such as community, national identity and family

Liberals: NO NOT LIKE THAT YOU FRAGILE BIGOTS!

    g.... ....

    damn, pretty apt summary

  9. M.... K....

Well done. Why don't you win a medal? Mary Berry's got a medal.

  10. G.... P....

This is great band, love them.
A breath of fresh air in a otherwise boring snowflake filled era in which we r forced to live._._._like it or not.

  11. C.... F....

Masculinity is fundamentally about competence and discipline. It is the ability to do regardless of sacrifice what should be done. Their is an inherent moral value in true masculinity.

  12. U.... D....

Now I feel like I'm going to be less masculine if I don't kiss a guy...

  13. h.... ....

Death to reds. We will be merciless.

  14. M.... B....

I love this song so much!

  15. M.... T....

53 here and this is fucking incredible. Takes me right back to the latter 70's

  16. M.... M....

-I hate myself and I want to die- I love myself and I want to try. Thanks for that.

  17. N.... ....

I saw my Father cry, at his Father's funeral. They didn't really get on.

  18. G.... ....

    Aaaaaaaaaah lovely clip

  19. B.... B....

I'd never seen my father cry, except one day when I walked in on him, and I saw him crying in private after my mother passed away.😔

    B.... B....

When we visited the Vietnam wall... and my grandmothers funeral. Only times. And yes... I vividly remember them both.

  20. T.... ....

Amazing band and a powerful piece of film making.

  21. S.... T....

The riff at 2:33 is beautiful man. I saw them at Ally Pally last night and easily my best day of 2019. ❤️🤘

    S.... T....

IDLES were absolute perfection that night

  22. M.... ....

My teacher has shown my class this video.
    Nice teacher, nice song! :D

  25. G.... F....

    Oi...ime here

  26. N.... ....

    Desde Perú!

  27. S.... ....

Lefties must have more dudes like IDLES. They have something to say, they strongly believe in it and they're saying it with style.

  28. g.... c....

This album is a fucking masterpiece. Each track got his soul and reason to be. Thanks for rivitalizing punk guys! We needed it.

  29. A.... S....

No song has ever made me feel like this one. It has really helped it me realise how shit my own father has been for 29 years and why I'm an insecure and fucked up as I am. Not wanting sympathy, just want to know this band helps people like they have me. 👌

  30. C.... C....

    These lyrics are so true!

  31. B.... ....

    World: Rock is Dead!
    Idles: Go fuck yourself!

  32. L.... t....

  38. J.... M....

Finally... A Breath of Fresh Air! Long overdue, Without doubt, the best band in recent years. a Combination a Great Ideas. Wake Up and Listen!

  39. R.... J....

    The absolute best

  40. m.... j....

Best thing to come out if England for years. After seeing them playing on Jools Holland immediately bought the album😀

  41. z.... ....

    Best IDLES song imo.

  42. C.... ....

Who would've thought that music dedicated to the pussies of the world could sound so bad-ass.

    C.... ....

    You're missing the point hun

  43. X.... ....

As a young guy I’m very happy I found this band

  44. A.... ....

    Brassic

  45. B.... S....

I showed this to my Dad.

  46. C.... M....

I tuck my homies into bed at night

  47. h.... k....

IDLES is probably the realest band out there in this day and age

  48. W.... D....

Tackling misandry, and misogyny in MOTHER, couldn't agree more with both messages.

  49. K.... F....

I can't stop listening to this. It's amazing.

  50. T.... G....

growing up seeing your father have flashbacks and having tears barely dripping down before he could wipe them away and hide them, i can say joyfully im glad im not a "man". its the reason i never hopped on the band wagon when all my friends were joining the armed forces. it just made no sense to me why anyone would want to put them selves through suffering to cause people who they dont know suffering in a different country while serving people who revel in all of their suffering combined.......

  51. N.... A....

Joy division whitout balls and talent

    N.... A....

    Err... Hmm.

    N.... A....

This is such a bad take

    N.... A....

Sounds nothing like joy division but ok

  52. E.... A....

Gostei do disco, achei a banda muito boa!vida longa ao rock!

  53. d.... ....

I remember around 2005-2010ish, listening to Fleet Foxes, thinking where have all the important bands gone with something real to say?? My conclusion was that we'd had it all (relatively) easy since the 90's and that's why people were singing about log cabins. What we needed was some crazy shit to happen for people to rebel against thus creating meaningful music. I didn't envisage the credit crunch, Nigel Farage, the rise of the alt-right, metoo, twitter, Donald Trump, Isis, Brexit and Boris Johnson.. But you're all welcome.

  54. k.... ....

Ain't nothing wrong in being masculine, a balance is all, yin and yang.

    k.... ....

If that is what you take away from this you're not very smart

    k.... ....

Jonanthan R Snowflakes are such an avalanche.

    k.... ....

Do you really think toxic masculinity means all masculinity?

    k.... ....

Lenin saved my country He doesn't say 'toxic masculinity" so it ain't so obvious. But then again, youse are all so clever. I said a two man tent the another day and someone said I should say two person tent. I said "Man up and grow some balls".

    k.... ....

Actually I'm just making the point that there is nothing wrong in being masculine. I love how people think they are so smarter than others because they think they have more insight on this particular song. Should I go away and read some books on 'toxic masculinity and then come back with your agreed opinion. LOL

  55. S.... W....

I love you all and i dream with the next time I can see you live and exchange sweat with you all. Including Jon if that’s possible.

  56. L.... v....

Fight toxic masculinity with real masculinity

    L.... v....

Sorry to be a smartass here, but the endgame is not to transform masculinity but to abolish it.
If you say "real men cry", "real men buckle their seatbelts" or whatever, you are still invoking the power of the gender role to bend people to your will. It may be possible to make the gender expectations in masculinity more positive, but it will still be an impossible standard, with all that aspire to it feeling life failures, with men policing the behavior of other men to adhere to it and so on. There is no "real masculinity" that should replace the current model of masculinity. We should instead remove this model of gendered coercion entirely.

    L.... v....

@TheMadnils So you want to turn all men into mentally and physically weak spineless manginas who are easy to control

  57. J.... C....

Can IDLES please just raise our son??

  58. S.... B....

I think this is one of the biggest deals with genre roles nowadays. Women are fighting for equality and, at the same time, men's role asks for a new change. What does BEING A MAN mean? What does MASCULINITY stand for? What makes a man?
Punk will never lose its meaning while bands like this keep preaching wise words in a society that still needs a big change.

    S.... B....

Time and great people will erridcate the bullshit that is sexism and toxic masculinity.

  59. T.... F....

This is definitely my favorite music video

  60. L.... v....

To all the conservative snowflakes: Politics has always had a place in music. You don't like that? Don't listen to Bob Dylan, John Lennon, The Clash etc. Actually just never ever listen to blues, like the entire genre of blues. IDLES are left-wing, that's just that.

    L.... v....

who... the hell was even talking abt politics, op? low key this is a super weird and irrelevant comment to insult and spark debate but you do you ig

    L.... v....

@holless idles is a political band, and the right don't like politics and art mixing because it helps "subversive ideas" move around

    L.... v....

@luca hyde how is the idea of toxic masculinity inherently political, though? and i dunno if i'd say that abt the right, either - or at least, it's not anything different than the left. no one likes to see political propaganda opposite their opinion, especially is it's an expression of art they like in and of itself. that's universal to both republicans and democrats. but none of that really matters bc i just don't really get how the message of this song specifically is political in nature, and why it necessitated a callout post for conservatives.

    L.... v....

@holless firstly, idles is about british politics, and the idea of classical "masculinity" is pushed much more from the right than the left, look how many fashy looneys you get talking about how men being able to wear makeup is the destruction of western society ect, and secondly, our morals very much fuel our politics and our ideals of masculinity help fuel those morals, and thus our ideology

    L.... v....

@luca hyde sorry, i was viewing it through an american lens, in which case you'd be incorrect about the pushing of classical masculinity. sure, you have the religious conservative boomers that are unlikely to accept any progressive societal change, but that isn't all conservatives are - america's gen z is vastly more libertarian than liberal, and would therefore be considered conservative, but likely have nothing against the idea of expanding traditional gender roles. hence my confusion as to why op called out conservatives as a whole, when social and fiscal conservatism are very separate in current american politics. anyway bye, this is a horrifically dumb subject imo lmao

  61. T.... B....

Imagine listening to music 100% approved of by jew media conglomerates + corporations, perfectly crafted to fit the deranged narratives they're currently pushing, and thinking it was somehow punk.

    T.... B....

@Thomas Crudden great response to realities you do not wish to acknowledge. You're a coward.

    T.... B....

@Taco Bell Valet the jews are coming to get you my friend, nothing you can do about it 👍

    T.... B....

@Thomas Crudden You're very afraid of anyone saying anything that challenges the propaganda of the mass media. That is indicative of low intelligence.

    T.... B....

@Taco Bell Valet You're a big brain boi.

    T.... B....

lmao exactly, this is music for Blue Checkmarks who want to feel "rebellious"

  62. t.... ....

Henry Rollins should sing this song, it fits to his style

  63. J.... P....

if you kiss a boy and you liked it, you a faggot m8

    J.... P....

    Don't use that word

    J.... P....

    @Jack Burton I'm gonna

  64. V.... M....

When they did this at Rebellion and Joe screamed "I kissed a boy and I liked it!", you could see the Exploited/Anti-Nowhere League fans looking somewhat nonplussed. Excellent.

    V.... M....

Vince Mahon That’s a shame, I like both ANL and Idles

  65. S.... M....

Jimmy Carr on ket at 2:52 Fuckin love IDLES

  66. J.... R....

I guess guys don't liking this song is because they love it but they don't want to kiss their mates

  67. J.... M....

Who tf wants to see their father cry ?

  68. A.... H....

    We smooch our homies here

  69. v.... f....

Daaaaam... That was fury and mindfull ate the same time.

  70. M.... ....

    Amazing band. Amazing messages.
Mad respect from Perth, Western Australia!

  71. O.... ....

    This is fucking incredible

  72. P.... ....

The lie that is ADHD causes boys to develop poorly in western societies and a lot of the behavioural and societal problems can be attributed to that.

  73. T.... B....

Fuck this whole song and video is genius

  74. L.... M....

    THE BAND IS SO GOOD

  75. G.... ....

Love this song but the message is destructive. Toxic masculinity? How about just be against toxic people in general? Why tear down masculinity? Do whatever the fuck you want with yourself and express yourself however but don't just tear down masculinity. It's a good thing.

    G.... ....

"How about just be against toxic people in general?" it will be a boring song about a boring topic, the song it's awesome because identifies the problem with toxic masculinity a path that leads you autodrestructive behavior

  76. e.... s....

Never mind feminism men need rights

    e.... s....

The difference is men had those rights but men in power took them away to subjugate poorer and low class men. Makes it easier to send them to war. Speaking very broadly here Btw. But women never had those rights to begin with such as liberty to do what you want with your own body, voting, certain positions ect. Not saying one is better than the other or whatever but both are needed, for now, for their own reasons.

  77. F.... ....

This song with this vid is going to be an all-time reminder of what to overcome and embellish as a man*

  78. R.... ....

Every man should see this. A theme against toxic masculinity. Wear pink (originally a masculine colour anyway). Cross your legs. Admit the 5% (at least) attraction to other men. Don't pretend. Love yourself.

    R.... ....

So important. Although at 26 it still hits me hard, I wish I heard this when I was 15

    R.... ....

    Dumb boomer

    R.... ....

I agree besides the supposed "5% attraction to males", its okay to be attracted 100% to the other sex and not at all towards your own 🙄

  79. G.... D....

It’s important for men to be honest about their feelings and intentions especially with women. This is of course directed more at straight men, it’s crucial to be honest within a relationship because the day will come where all your anger justified or not will be the end of you. It’s ok to be angry but it needs to be righteous. Just like your feelings

  80. S.... S....

    Leftists:
"We need to stop toxic masculity, boys have to open up and be more sensitive!"
    Also leftists:
"Let's keep shaming depressed low value males by telling them to man up and completely ignore their mental problems!"

    S.... S....

As someone who is very left-wing, I wholeheartedly agree. The majority of feminist-identified leftists on the internet seem to only care about men's mental health after we've killed ourselves.

    S.... S....

Although I have seen them be very averse to using the phrase "man up", they at least admit that that's a stupid toxic phrase; they just participate in acts of blatant gaslighting by telling us that our emotions are either invalid because we haven't experienced the correct amount of oppression, or that we are actively faking our emotions in order to gain sympathy and attention (I'm thinking back to the bullshit with Pete Davidson after he broke up with Ariana Grande).

    S.... S....

You realize the lyrics are meant to be ironic right?

  81. L.... S....

thank you for this... lots of love from Argentina

  82. J.... S....

My wife and neighbors hate you....

  83. l.... x....

you are by far the most important band in society right now. <3

  84. F.... N....

    Punks not dead

  85. J.... C....

This is a great song that tackles a real relevant issue, its odd that I disagree with the name of it; maskulinity as sung, would have been perfect and would have brought more attention to its message. Maybe someone can inform me why it is called Samaritans

    J.... C....

No clue. But the history of Samaritans and samaritanism is pretty fascinating.

  86. C.... H....

    Great band bad politics

  87. P.... f....

Great video, but I'm surprised it didn't get any backlash from all the sensitive offended men who complained about the Gilette advert.

    P.... f....

Ah I dunno, this felt more heartfelt and less condescending. My problem with the Gillette advert was it's approach more than it's message. Plus I hate it when corporations latch on to a social movement for branding purposes

  88. i.... ....

    amazing seeing their transformation.
just found them a week ago and got their shit on bandcamp today. gonna have to fly across the country and see them in my hometown in KC in a couple months, can't wait fellas

    i.... ....

re transformation: their earlier stuff's great yet different, but they really transformed. see generally, "germany", "thieves", etc

  89. r.... ....

    This shit gay

    r.... ....

    Nvm just cried

  90. R.... ....

    fantastic song

  91. Y.... ....

People who hate "toxic masculinity" are sensitive men (wich it's not bad, necessarily) that don't wanted to face reality, most of them are snowflakes.

  92. J.... B....

I always thought it was funny how the military is supposed to be peak masculinity. In that case the definition of manliness is submitting yourself into an organization where you must do everything your told and what you're told to do is to go kill poor people so rich people get richer.

    J.... B....

@Taco Bell Valet why not.... they were simple minded enough to allow their minds to be hijacked for a purpose that is not of their own. 13 years ago a recruiter from my school tried calling me to join 2 times. i told him no twice. he called me a third time and harassed me. he told me im betraying my country and that my father, a vietnam vet who passed when i was 13, would be disappointed in me. I told him to fuck off and that i would never serve for a country that sent my father to a pointless war and then mistreated him when he returned.

    J.... B....

@The Grappler Good for you man, you did the right thing 👍

    J.... B....

And don't forget how homo erotic war is either. When blokes act like it's all manly for killing and being violent then pretend the unadmitted tonge in cheek covertness that being homosexual isn't actually the most "manly" thing in toxic masculinity yet remains one of "biggest" unspoken part of joining the forces. "We all know guys, it's ok just stop telling us we are nuts when we realise about the opportunistic nature the need for closeness and urges specifically during traumatic times, I mean what caused the baby boomer generations? Ah doi"

    IDLES are brilliant

    J.... B....

The military isn't peak masculinity. Discipline and competence are peak masculinity and the military is based on those ideas. I'm not military man but I do work around a lot of military personnel. Nobody just does what they're told in a healthy robust military environment. There is a lot of back and forth about making the best decisions. You sound like a 12 year old communist with a beret who read a book one time.

    J.... B....

I am a pacifist. With that said, I know some amazing veterans who are taking the discipline they learned in the Army and putting it towards positive work in my community. They are community-oriented, yet strong independent thinkers. So, in our efforts to oppose the military industrial complex, let's not alienate our veteran friends - their knowledge and understanding is a great asset.

  93. C.... ....

Who ever put this video together deserves an award it really emphasizes the feeling behind this song
