Iced Earth - Highwayman Lyrics

I was a highwayman along the coach roads I did ride with sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five but I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide and with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed but I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around I will always be around

I fly a starship across the Universe divide and when I reach the other side
I will find a place to rest my spirit if I can perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain but I will remain and I will be back again

  13. K.... ....

I'm sorry, no. You don't cover a song with Johnny Cash in it. That's borderline blasphemy.

  14. T.... H....

    Best version by far

  15. S.... W....

Normally I can respect different genres of music, but for a song so steeped in a reserved folk themes, this rendition of it just seems wrong. Maybe because I have the country versions memorized.

  16. S.... R....

I fucking love this song. Wish every song was like this haha

  17. A.... W....

    Top !!!

  18. I.... S....

    Iced earth is highly underrated

  19. D.... 0....

Stu and Michael absolutely killed their respective parts! Not saying the others were bad but jeez. Those two can SING!

  20. B.... F....

    95 people didn't fly a starship

  21. g.... ....

GODDAMn I love this cover. Such a deep original song by the Highwaymen

  22. J.... H....

I'm gonna play this on repeat till I die, then come back to it in my next life, and the next, and the next....

if you like this watch this ;)

  25. G.... ....

All vocal performances are top notch in this song! Jon's got a pretty epic gruff to his voice, Russell is just a total virtuoso, Stu's got his voice venom (that has allegedly been taught by Jon) and then Poulsen resonant howl, good god!

  26. C.... ....

    Utter shit

  27. D.... Q....

    great cover

  28. D.... J....

Paulson makes this song the others don’t seem to sound very good. The deliberate grittiness of their voices doesn’t sound very good. Just my 2 cents

  29. T.... T....

I like how they made it their own

  30. h.... ....

Russell Allens verse is the only well sung verse. Volshits was by far the worst. I fli a starshiyurhu across the universdivihuh

  31. j.... m....

3 minutes and 13 seconds goes way to fast.

  32. j.... w....

This isnt even close to as good as the original

  33. T.... M....

    Discusting.

  34. D.... H....

    Michael 🖤🤘🏻

  35. F.... ....

Great song! I love michaels voice! Volbeat for evigt!

  36. r.... ....

All the vocalists are good but let's also give a little more appreciation to Stu!

  37. D.... D....

Quit murdering good songs. Keep this to yourselves. For a johnnny cash fan you did him no respect. Redo this better. It sucks major ass like some 80s shit

  38. I.... S....

this is disrespectful to the original

  39. I.... S....

this is disrespectful to the original

  40. E.... N....

Stu Block is on point. Waylon Jennings would be proud.

  41. K.... ....

    Not really good version

  42. h.... ....

I love the music but only the second verse guy can sing

  43. M.... H....

Russell Allen is amazing...what a tone...

  44. M.... L....

Always wondered what this would sound like with James Hetfield, Paul Stanley, Vince Neil, and Old man Dio

    M.... L....

Shitty excluding Hetfield and Neil's parts lol.

    M.... L....

Dio would have sounded so good on this

  45. R.... D....

    fuckin brilliant

  46. D.... Y....

it should be only michael poulsen. no disrespect to the others, but it's too crowded...

  47. A.... ....

    End.mu.life.please

    A.... ....

    Achadler will do

  48. G.... H....

    I liked this one

  52. E.... B....

A great song is a great song.

  53. A.... M....

    love love love

  54. J.... n....

Yes volbeat the badass Danish rock band. My favorite

  55. E.... S....

    ONE WORD:
    SUPERB!

  56. L.... ....

such a dope fucking cover, yo!

  57. K.... R....

    Algum Br ?

  58. p.... _....

honestly I'm a huge rock fan and a huge classic country fan and I don't like it I'm to use to the simplness of the willie kris waylon and johnny version it's not bad just feel like a harder beat didn't do much justice

  59. Z.... ....

    this is fucking awesome

    Z.... ....

Right i love the orginal but this is still great

  60. H.... H....

When Michael starts singing it's just awesome

    H.... H....

When he starts to sing, it feels like you're in the same starship as the highwayman in the song.

    H.... H....

I crank it up as soon as he sings!

  61. B.... i....

LOVE IT!! Super creative. It's what we musicians call "art" and you nailed it...

  62. J.... G....

    Not fuckin bad!!!

  63. J.... B....

I went to an Iced Earth show in Columbus, OH less than a week before my grandpa's death in 2014. At the end of the show, as people were filing out of the building, they played this song over the speakers. Later on my grandma gave my dad my grandpa's truck, and the only CD in it was a Highwaymen greatest hits. This song holds a lot of meaning to me due to that little coincidence. Cheers, folks.

    J.... B....

It's 2018 and this little anecdote hit me right in the feels.

    J.... B....

ive always said this to close friends, this is the song that will be played at my funeral

    J.... B....

    That's cool as hell

  64. S.... S....

    👍✌

  65. R.... C....

Love Iced Earth and Volbeat but damn! Russell Allen just schools all of them on vocals!! I'd love to see him and Jon Schaffer do a side project!

  66. A.... P....

I think the white buffalo's version is the best. Its the most "to the point" with all the crap cuted and some deep feeling.

    A.... P....

Amen to that, TWB blows the others away on this one

    A.... P....

99 of you red baloons can make an awesome song, I.m.h.o.
    @StonedRockz

  67. c.... ....

I'm a massive fan of the brilliant Jimmy Webb. I can imagine him listening to this with a big smile on his face. :)

  68. D.... W....

This is good but I still prefer the Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash version.

    D.... W....

@60BloodyChamp60 so you saying you don't like this song because because it has high production value? Im actually interested by specifically what you mean. Im a sound engineer by trade so I dont really understand your comment about it being "processed" as anything recorded is very "processed" by the definition of producing something that isnt a turd. It objectively is what separates amateur garage bands from professionals. Even then with all the readily available software for music out there amateurs now have access to basically all of the "processioning" that pros have. You've basically said you don't like it because it was produced by a professional studio? Correct me if I am wrong

    D.... W....

    MrPookies seriously dude

    D.... W....

    you suck

    D.... W....

You could have made it simple and just said The Highwaymen version 🙄🙄

    D.... W....

@60BloodyChamp60 I'd love to be pointed to some of those, being my favorite two types of music.

  69. C.... ....

Song is great till the guy from volbeat sings. Ruins the song

    C.... ....

+TheJudge137 haha. This is the best part for me :D
Its all about taste i suppose.

  70. E.... C....

I think the highwaymen did this song better 😕 but it's not a bad song if you like heavy metal . If you listen to the county version it's a shit ton better than most country out there . No offense but 2010-now country sounds like shit sounds like rap to me but it's an okay version 😊

  71. o.... ....

I think Stu is the best!

  72. A.... M....

Essa música tem um sério problema..... 3 minutos.....

  73. D.... T....

Poulsen's voice is pure gold! Sorry, dont mean to dis the others cause they are good but he is on another level...he is the epitomy of cool!

    D.... T....

Daniel Testa I'd say that Russell Allen schooled them all.

    D.... T....

Another level? Lol, on his best day he's not half as good as Russell Allen, and Stu Block also tops him pretty handily. Only one he Poulsen beats is Jon Schaffer.

    D.... T....

DShiflet01 comparing Poulsen and Allen is like comparing a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce. Both are phenomenal at what they do. Their singing styles are vastly different. Allen definitely has the 80s metal style down, and he is exceptionally good at the kind of music he sings. Poulsen’s voice carries the rockabilly vibe - which is reflected by the music that influenced him. You just can’t compare the two because they are just two different beasts.

  74. P.... P....

Michael Poulsen kills it..Love his voice!!

  75. A.... D....

Auch meine Arbeiten: Anhaltspunkte auf endlose Straße & andere Gesellschaft, etc gefunden

  76. N.... T....

I'm a hardcore Volbeat fan, but man can Russel Allen fucking sing ! Still love Michael <3 Let's just love them all ! \,,/

  77. D.... K....

Fuck you all this song is sick and all involved do a bad ass job

  78. h.... ....

all these vocalists suck, the music is done well but the vocal melodies they use are awful and their singing voices are the voices people use to take the piss out of metal singer, actually the second guy is alright

    h.... ....

Go listen to your Justin Bieber songs then. I like the original done by The Highwaymen as well.

    h.... ....

i dont listen to justin bieber i listen to rock and metal as well as pretty much every genre pre 2000

    h.... ....

@deathjoker666 and i changed my mind about the second guy, but the rest do suck real bad

  79. O.... H....

Wow this is just terrible, the original highwaymen would be ashamed.

    O.... H....

+Brian Rogers I don't think any artists should ever be offended when they have inspired someone else with their work, but that's just me.

    O.... H....

I bet your parents are ashamed that the condom didn't work.

  80. B.... D....

This is fucking garbage! Way to absolutely ruin a really good song. Anyone of the original Highway men have more talent than this entire shit hole band!

    B.... D....

@Brett D It wasn't even their song, dumbass.

    B.... D....

no one gives a shit about you.

    B.... D....

    @Anthony Rigollet Touché

  81. M.... M....

    4 vocalists:

0:10 - Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth guitarist)
    0:44 - Russell Allen (Symphony X)
1:18 - Stu Block (Iced Earth)
    2:06 - Michael Poulsen (Volbeat)

    You're welcome.

    M.... M....

    Thank you bro!

    M.... M....

Metal Maestro Jon is also the lead vocalist for Sons of Liberty

    M.... M....

Metal Maestro fuckin awesome tune, they kept it somewhat original, love all their voices, specially poulson.

    M.... M....

Metal Maestro Thanks, i love Stu's part so freaking much.

    M.... M....

Fuck I knew the last guy sounded like the Volbeat singer

  82. G.... O....

This is what I want em to play when they finally plant me in the ground.

  83. M.... S....

I love my country especially the original Highway Men and I love my metal. I love iced Earth and I like Volbeat, Russell Allen is okay but wow just wow these guys just did an amazing cover!!! And Michael Poulson did an Amazing job with Johnny Cash's line!!!

  84. W.... R....

Wow., I have never laughed so hard. Really, thanks I needed that lol. It's not a bad cover, it's great comedy!

  85. e.... ....

I think it's a real shame that there's so many Volbeat fans here giving shout-outs to Michael Poulsen and ignoring or even shitting on the other singers on this song. Jon's vocals aside, Stu Block and Russell Allen sing the shingles off the roof on this, just like Michael Poulsen. So Volbeat fans, how 'bout you expand your horizons a little instead of worshipping your one band? You like Volbeat, that's cool, but there's plenty of other great bands apart from the one band you know in the genre. Appreciate them and their musicians instead of just gushing about that one band you know.

    e.... ....

Everyone should be worshipping The Highwaymen group

    e.... ....

@elstormo are you retarded, its called people have preferences and I am sure they enjoy the others vocals just not as much as his. I don't like any of that bands music but i love that guys vocals in this song specifically, who the fuck cares you weirdo.

    e.... ....

@LeetDragoon Try that again when you've learned not to talk like a twelve-year-old. Get some reading comprehension exercises in too while you're at it.

    e.... ....

I like both bands. Iced Earth song s I like the are Devil to Pay, Hold at All Cost, and High Water Mark. Iced Earth is a solid band so is Volbeat.

  86. P.... ....

THE DUDE FROM ADRENALIN MOB SINGS IN THIS TOO HORY SHET

  87. n.... ....

this is my favorite version. Sure, it was cool to hear 60 plus old men singing about the past but this one reminds me of serving in the Army.

  88. C.... ....

fuckkkkk! i thought i was on to something coming up with a metal version of this song.... someone beat me to it x.x

  89. A.... G....

    Great cover.. to me...... 8+

  90. J.... B....

I think this is awesome! Nice job guys!

  91. a.... R....

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
    But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..

    a.... R....

    THAT WAS THE BEST PART

    a.... R....

Look up one of the original highwayman songs 😊 this is actually a country song .

    a.... R....

    @Erica Campbell yes, it's a lovely song!!

    a.... R....

    Michael's voice made it perfect

  92. A.... A....

lol this is shitty. The second singer was mediocre at best, the rest sucked.

    A.... A....

lol probably but we're the ones sitting on youtube trolling so i guess you cant really talk either.

    A.... A....

Jon Schaffer (the first vocalist) shouldn't sing, agreed, but Michael Poulsen, Stu Block and Russell Allen are three highly respected singers, and they do a great job on this track. Methinks you're just trolling. Either that or you don't know shit about music and should go back to bopping to One Direction.

  93. D.... ....

This is absolutely terrible. This can't even compete with the original.

    D.... ....

    they're not trying to.

    D.... ....

I love this version personally, Michael paulson is great and iced earth is amazing live.

    D.... ....

It's a great version if you're into this kind of metal :D

    D.... ....

Music is arbitrary. You like or you don't. No putting down another's tastes because what's the point?

    D.... ....

@DerekT honestly i think the original had more of a depressing sound to it, which is good since i think t hats what its trying to comunicate, but this one sounds kinda like cool and optimistic lol

  94. s.... ....

who is the guy that sings t6he last part

  95. -.... ....

I wouldn't call it "good", just sounds more silly than anything else.

  96. T.... S....

Not a bad cover for crossing genres so far apart. Glen Campbell version is probably the best.

  97. J.... G....

Great great cover of this awesome song everyone did a great job! Never heard Jon sing before

    J.... G....

He sings on Stormrider, God Of Thunder, Jekyll & Hyde, A Gift Or A Curse?, Burnt Offerings, etc...

    J.... G....

@icedearthneverdies Well, "sings". He's a great (if limited) guitarist and a capable songwriter but Jon was never much of a vocalist, as much as he'd like to be.

  98. m.... m....

    who sings the sailor part?

    m.... m....

That's Russell Allen of Symphony X.

  99. H.... H....

    beautiful

  100. L.... ....

the best cover iv ever heard of this song.

    L.... ....

WTF!? Not bad at all but far from the Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson Waylon Jennings & Kris Kristoffersen version. Even the original is far better. And believe me I love and live Hard Rock and Heavy Metal and despise mostly of Country.
And I thik the "Volbeat guy" did fit even less in in. But either you like is voice, than he is great or you dont.

    L.... ....

You've misunderstood me. The cash, nelson, waylon, and kristoffersen version is the original. Im saying aside from them. You cant beat the original simply because johnny cash is in it. (in my opinion) but aside from the original highwaymen id say that this version is the best cover of them.

    L.... ....

Okay, that explains it. The original version is by Jimmy Webb. Cash and Co covered it., too.

    L.... ....

@SerjTankian98 No, having dynamics, melody, and an overall better Feel does. I loves me some Iced Earth, but this is not so great.

    L.... ....

sounds like someone thinks they are an expert on music.
