Normally I can respect different genres of music, but for a song so steeped in a reserved folk themes, this rendition of it just seems wrong. Maybe because I have the country versions memorized.

All vocal performances are top notch in this song! Jon's got a pretty epic gruff to his voice, Russell is just a total virtuoso, Stu's got his voice venom (that has allegedly been taught by Jon) and then Poulsen resonant howl, good god!

I went to an Iced Earth show in Columbus, OH less than a week before my grandpa's death in 2014. At the end of the show, as people were filing out of the building, they played this song over the speakers. Later on my grandma gave my dad my grandpa's truck, and the only CD in it was a Highwaymen greatest hits. This song holds a lot of meaning to me due to that little coincidence. Cheers, folks.

I think the white buffalo's version is the best. Its the most "to the point" with all the crap cuted and some deep feeling.

Im a sound engineer by trade so I dont really understand your comment about it being "processed" as anything recorded is very "processed" by the definition of producing something that isnt a turd. It objectively is what separates amateur garage bands from professionals. Even then with all the readily available software for music out there amateurs now have access to basically all of the "processioning" that pros have. You've basically said you don't like it because it was produced by a professional studio? Correct me if I am wrong

Another level? Lol, on his best day he's not half as good as Russell Allen, and Stu Block also tops him pretty handily. Only one he Poulsen beats is Jon Schaffer.

DShiflet01 comparing Poulsen and Allen is like comparing a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce. Both are phenomenal at what they do. Their singing styles are vastly different. Allen definitely has the 80s metal style down, and he is exceptionally good at the kind of music he sings. Poulsen’s voice carries the rockabilly vibe - which is reflected by the music that influenced him. You just can’t compare the two because they are just two different beasts.

So Volbeat fans, how 'bout you expand your horizons a little instead of worshipping your one band? You like Volbeat, that's cool, but there's plenty of other great bands apart from the one band you know in the genre. I like both bands. Iced Earth song s I like the are Devil to Pay, Hold at All Cost, and High Water Mark. Iced Earth is a solid band so is Volbeat.

You've misunderstood me. The cash, nelson, waylon, and kristoffersen version is the original. Im saying aside from them. You cant beat the original simply because johnny cash is in it. (in my opinion) but aside from the original highwaymen id say that this version is the best cover of them.
