Ian, Janis - The Last Comeback Lyrics

Roll out the red carpet, let me in
Here I am knocking down the door again
Broken dreams - broken lives
In the end, only hope survives
Only hope survives

These are the songs nobody wanted
This is the voice that no one heard
This is the show that no one came to
The lights are down - the stage is black
I'm ready now for the last comeback

I fear the anger and the greed
Shallow as the heart I let you see
Frightened by the hunger and the shame
Selling out a soul for a well-known name
Just a well known name

These are the nights no one remembers
These are the stages time forgets
These are the shows that no one came to
The lights are down - the stage is black
I'm ready for the last comeback

It's what I want
It's what I need
It's only make believe

What'cha gonna do when time runs out?
Nobody remembers your name now
It's in the heart - it's in the eyes
But you know the fire never dies
The fire never dies

These are the songs nobody wanted
This is the voice that no one heard
This is the show that no one came to
The lights are down - the stage is black
I'm ready for the last comeback
The lights are down - the stage is black
I'm ready for the last comeback

The best part of the song is -''it's relatable"

  9. C.... L....

This song can be devastatingly cruel or uplifting depending on what you've gone through and how you dealt with it.

I remember when I was a teenager and my Great Aunt had just died of cancer and I was just walking depressed out of the hospital with this in my head.

Everyone finds love... I'm a kind of guy who falls in love with flaws... If a person has a flaw, god creates another person who will grow to love that flaw... Everything happens for a reason that's the beauty of this universe....

  14. o.... m....

Lately , the number in this song is getting lower. I learnt these at twelve. Twelve years of age was when I realised that nobody will be treated the same if they look different. Never ever ever let somebody tell you what to be. I let it.

  20. D.... F....

Simpsons brought me here, who else is here after seeing Homer searching for his true soul-mate but don't find that while this is playing in the background.

  21. U.... N....

    The Simpsons!

  22. K.... ....

if you give love to a person that doesn't like themself , they will treat you like an inferior , for how can you be good if you love someone that isn't .

  25. n.... m....

I'm 17. I wrote all my problems at Google search like I always do and I found this song ;)

  26. A.... R....

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
    The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth
And those of us with ravaged faces
    Lacking in the social graces
    Desperately remained at home
    Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say "Come dance with me"
    And murmured vague obscenities
    It isn't all it seems
    At seventeen
A brown eyed girl in hand-me-downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said, "Pity, please, the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve"
And the rich relationed hometown queen
    Marries into what she needs
    With a guarantee of company
    And haven for the elderly
Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
    In debentures of quality
    And dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
In dull surprise when payment due
    Exceeds accounts received
    At seventeen
To those of us who knew the pain
    Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
    When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
When dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me
We all play the game, and when we dare
    To cheat ourselves at solitaire
    Inventing lovers on the phone
    Repenting other lives unknown
They call and say, "Come dance with me"
    And murmur vague obscenities
    At ugly girls like me
    At seventeen

Life is scary for all kids at 17. My 17 yr.old friend 40 yrs ago, who was a spotty Herbert kid like me, bravely crossed the empty dance floor and asked the best looking girl in the room to dance. She ignored him, but then he made the fatal error of asking her friend, who of course, being 17 herself, wouldn't accept in such circumstances, so, he plodded on, asking others who had seen the previous refusals, with the same result, while I inwardly prayed that one would be kind say yes and end his pain. But none did, and he returned to the derision of his "friends". He now is Millionaire and lives in Dubai with his beautiful wife and kids.
I talked to him the other day and he still remembers " the long walk back".

  37. N.... L....

    beautiful song 😊

Just watched the simpsons, shoutout Chief Wiggum.

  40. M.... W....

After having just attended a Masterclass by Ms. Ian, I revisited these lyrics and am still blown away by the universal message. The vast majority can, in some way, identify with the feeling of being outcast or disenfranchised. Most people spend their lives wanted to be liked, or at least tolerated. We find ourselves wanting or needing to be part of the "in-crowd." There is always a circle in which we just don't fit, or at least, feel we don't. This song may be a little sad, but even if the specifics of the song don't describe you, the general sentiment is something we have all gone through in some way.

  41. V.... d....

All of us with ravaged faces, lacking in social graces... Ooff i felt that..

  42. V.... S....

  58. L.... G....

I remember when Janis Ian recorded "Societies Child", and no radio stations would play it. Then suddenly a movement started with the Hippies, and became like a their rebelious Him. The year was 1967. I loved the song and still have the LP. Ar seventeen was another one of her hits. Janis Ian was different and great singer/songwriter. God bless her whereever she may be.

    L.... G....

Janis today has been replying to comments on 'Wings of Pegasus Janis Ian' which is an analysis of this song. She has replied to lots of comments.

.... and for chubby boys at 17 😢

  77. t.... ....

Who's here because of "Absolutely Fabulous the movie"?

  78. P.... P....

Sad songs tend to be the most beautifully sang. My advice to 17yo girls is this: very few indeed at that age are physically ugly, and whether you are or not so, get building your self-confidence in other things and the said "ugly duckling" will become a swan. Don't waste your youth!

  79. V.... S....

Home and this song was playing

  80. V.... S....

    I just came

  81. H.... ....

At Seventeen, played by Janis Ian. Janis Ian plays on Mean Girls, they made a musical. The girl who plays Janis Ian in the musical also plays in another musical called Heathers. In that musical she sang a song called “Seventeen”. Just though of this when I say the title

I remember back then when growing up I was mocked by the so-called popular kids. I just smacked them across the face and that was it. They never mocked me again.

  85. c.... m....

A beautiful song that sums up so much.

  86. M.... S....

  88. h.... g....

    Every fu**ing time :___
