Ian Dury - Inbetweenies Lyrics

In the mirror, when I'm debonair
My reactions are my own affair
A body likes to be near the bone
Oh Nancy, Leslie, Jack and Joan
I die when I'm alone, alone

Shake your booty when your back is bent
Put your feelings where my mouth just went
As serious as things do seem
At least you've put me on the team
And friends, do rule, supreme, OK

Oh, pardon you, me (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
With a capital 'C' (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
And who would have thought (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
With a capital nought (inbetweenies)
In between the lines

Spread your chickens when you think of next (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
What the Dickens if they're highly-sexed
Through channels that were once canals
Do lift the heart of my morale
To know that we are pals, yes

Oh, vanity fair (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
With a capital 'V' (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
You give me a share (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
You take it from me (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
Oh, jolly good show (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
With a capital 'O' (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
It's terrific to go (inbetweenies, inbetweenies)
Hellooo (inbetweenies)

Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello

Barney Beanies, ultra marinees

Inbetweenies, inbetweenies, inbetweenies, inbetweenies, inbetweenies, inbetweenies

Greatest ending to a song ever, real hairs on the back of the neck moment.

  9. J.... B....

The Blockheads at their peak could have given Steely Dan a run for their money.

  10. s.... ....

The underrated Chaz Jankel. Such a massive talent.

  11. J.... D....

While  I  don't  have  yr  version,  I  do  have  the  picture  sleeve  AND  2  Blockhead  stickers!  Rock n Roll  4 ever!

  14. d.... ....

    A classic.

  15. t.... ....

One of the best albums ever! We're still listening to you Ian☺

  16. t.... e....

    アダルト&ファンキーで小粋なナンバー♪ブロックヘッズの演奏が良いですね~(^^)正直ここまでテクニカルでセンスを感じさせるバンドとは思っていなかったので、ビックリしました!

  17. P.... C....

Türkçe olarak yorumlayacak birileri vardır değil mi ? :)

  18. M.... P....

Saw Ian and the Blockheads 'Laughter' album launch tour at Deeside, North Wales around 1980? Played a lot of D.I.Y. and N.B.& P. also. Awesome event/evening. Most of the crowd dancing the night away 🤗🤩

  19. h.... b....

What the dickens! Simply amazing musicianship. God bless you Mr Dury and your Blockheads.

  20. b.... ....

Awesome! You can hear the influence of Steely Dan & Fagan's solo albums in this great tune....e.g. from "The Royal Scam". :)

  21. w.... ....

its a great album - have it on vinyl from right back then

  22. L.... G....

Check a transcription I did of this piano solo :) Such a fun song! https://youtu.be/fUXMorVgfn8

  23. M.... L....

    hehe :)

    This is sex.

  24. J.... S....

Chaz Jankel is the genius on Do It Yourself, not Ian Dury.

    J.... S....

    + Norman Watt-Roy

    J.... S....

Chaz did indeed at A LOT to the sound, but so many musical layers with different aspects and perspectives on the final result, and let us not forget Ian's fine wordsmithery. The sum is greater than all the parts. Awesomeness abounds - Tommy the Talking Toolbox 😎

  25. o.... a....

    1979 big memories 🇫🇷

  26. C.... M....

The Blockheads were a serious backing band, Some top class instrument playing on the majority of this groups tracks.

  27. H.... T....

Ian was brill, but The Blockheads were a terribly underrated backing band.

  28. P.... C....

SIR IAN DURY .THE ONLY MAN TO NEVER HAVE BEEN KNIGHTED ..

    RIP SIR☺✔💡💡💡🌟

  29. g.... ....

Micky Gallagher's piano never ceases to blow my tiny mind.

    g.... ....

    Or is it Chaz?

  30. d.... b....

cazzo ian, che bravo che eri... e peccato che non possa capire tutta l'ironia del tuo slang cockney...

  31. J.... T....

    Very special

  32. b.... f....

57 ans, français, je ne l'oublie jamais.......................................

  33. C.... ....

Brings back good memories! Haven't heard this in 30 years! Talented band! Ian was a unique character!

  34. R.... L....

Driving from Balranald to Euston one sunny autumn day doing about 130km/h with this track blasting out the car stereo - heaven! Vale Ian.

  35. g.... ....

And they thought The Jam was "too English!" Beloved of many, gone too young.

  36. G.... R....

Chaz Jankel is Middlesex's Donald Fagen. No Steely Dan track is slicker than this

  37. j.... ....

    A proper legend!

  38. B.... G....

Always going somewhere ain't it...smile cry laugh hug....love you all my ol m8s 😎

  39. a.... m....

fabulous production from one of their band members.....mr chaz jankel......taking care of those super smooth deep disco sound virbrations....i used to spin this alot when i was playing my deep disco set back in '98-'04......another cool tune is on the 'Snake Charmer 'album from Jah Wobble called ' hold on to your dreams '.....The Edge' plays gutar on the track......enjoy the smoothness!......oh and PRAISE THE LORD ABOVE !!!

  40. f.... ....

    Just WOW !

  41. M.... L....

GREAT album...I discovered this in 1981, when I was 17...in the cut-outs at Target, along with another of my all time faves, "English Boys/Working Girls", by Deaf School...99 cents each...best $2.00 I ever spent...still sounds as fresh today as it did then!

  42. D.... F....

what an absolutely brilliant tune, the guy was a genius!

  43. R.... E....

The whole song is epic but the ending, for me, is the best part of all. idk why

  44. J.... V....

    Brilliant, criminally ignored

  45. L.... W....

gunproofgrandad. i couldnt have said it better myself. outstanding track, oozes quality

  46. G.... ....

What really impresses me about this tune is, how full it is texturally; there's loads of things going on, but it doesn't sound too busy or cluttered - it's just right. All those tones mingling together and becoming more than the sum of their parts... Beautiful.

    G.... ....

I have to say that that is exactly how i would always sum up this legend and his band!

    G.... ....

THE BLOCKHEADS ARE FANTASTIC SESSION MUSICIANS
    IAN IS WELL GOD!!

  47. C.... ....

Bought it when it came out. Hadn't listened to it for about 35 years! Nice to come back to it with (very) fresh ears and a new perspective. Suggests Steely Dan. Good Stuff!

    C.... ....

Watching a Steely Dan retrospective on you tube, who pops up, Mr Ian Dury giving his thumbs up for Donald and Walter and the feelings they put in their music.

  48. G.... W....

This is my favourite from their repertoire.

  49. J.... O....

    Still fucking great

    J.... O....

+John Ozed Yeah, it is!! :D

  50. M.... R....

    Great tune.  Very clever lyrics.

  51. S.... ....

    perfection!

  52. n.... t....

Ian is THE man.  He and the Blockheads were so creative; nearly a punk/jazz fusion, sort of, kind of inbetween :-)

  53. C.... J....

A great record, still sounds good today.

  54. H.... F....

thoughts with wilko. Just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.....

  55. r.... t....

I loved this song. When the Album came out I played it often on College Radio, but the big Corporate Power Idiots, never recognized his genius. This is timeless though....

  56. J.... B....

I love this track..What a genius he was.. Hello!

    J.... B....

@rock lizard You are my heart  ;-)

    J.... B....

    @Jane Barton Likewise darling  ;o)

    J.... B....

Yes Jane, what a Genius he was ! Such great Music :-))

    J.... B....

    Yeah,I think so..

  57. L.... ....

Evaluation of them I think I was up in me in this one song.
Performance is good without odd guys.
I also happen to have heard well and live best,
I would like to hear many more in the future.
Although I is regrettable that a band new album is not out to say that,,,

  58. T.... B....

    Souvenirs, souvenirs!...

  59. R.... ....

    ♥♥♥

  60. V.... A....

    too good

  61. v.... ....

This was the first song by Ian & the Blockheads I ever heard, I love it just as much today as I did then.  Just brilliant.  Oi Oi!

  62. u.... ....

this is my fave, followed by dance of the screamers

  63. O.... L....

    Tiene un piano increíble.

  64. P.... ....

    well ahead of it's time

  65. N.... W....

I want this played at my funeral.

  66. Q.... P....

I can listen to Ian Dury endlessly without the boredom of much la de da of all the crap I hear out there.... he will never be replaced to my ears

  67. B.... C....

    Utterly brilliant and unique.

  68. f.... ....

Complientary stylings of musicianship that coalesce and yield a jolly good show for all, whether you're an over achiever or some like me ,an inbetweenie. Please allow your ears to experience the broad range of eclectic sounds ala IAN and co.

    f.... ....

    A classic tune

  69. c.... ....

I love it...timeless tracks...brilliant musicianship and Ians suprisingly sweet touching lyrics...oh as well as comic. I love it love it.

  70. S.... W....

Great art work by Barney Bubbles

  71. W.... ....

    Ian We Love You FOREVER!!!

  72. D.... W....

a superb album as is new boots and panties and laughter, the world is a much sadder and pooer place for the lack of people like ian dury, when i snuff it ian i hope i meet you on the other side which sadly i never had the pleasure of of this sad mortal coil...: ))

  73. B.... M....

Got this hot off the press and still play it often. It shows what great muso'c\s the Blockheads were.

  74. T.... ....

I preferred this album to new boot and panties. I did not realise the album cover had number of different wall paper coverings.
    thanks for sharing.

  75. H.... ....

Like you say mate a sadly underrated album. I think it was too sophisticated for most of us back then, now i get it completely.
