Ian Dury - Blockheads Lyrics

You must have seen parties of Blockheads
With blotched and lagered skin
Blockheads with food particles in their teeth
What a horrible state they're in

They've got womanly breasts under pale mauve vests
Shoes like dead pigs' noses
Cornflake packet jacket, catalogue trousers
A mouth what never closes

You must have seen Blockheads in raucous teams
Dressed up after work
Who screw their poor old Eileens
Get sloshed, and go berserk

Rotary accessory watches
Hire-purchase signet rings
A beauty to the bully boys
No lonely vestige clings

Why bother at all about Blockheads?
Why shouldn't they do as they please?
You know if it came to a brainy game
You could baffle a Blockhead with ease

How would you like one puffing and blowing in your ear-hole?
Or pissing in your swimming pool?

Bigger brained Blockheads often acquire
Black and orange cars
Premature ejaculation drivers
Their soft-top's got roll-bars

"Fill her up," they say the Blockheads
"Go on, stick it where it hurts!"
Their shapeless haircuts don't enhance
Their ghastly patterned shirts

Why bother at all about Blockheads?
Superior as you are
You're thoughtful and kind with a well-stocked mind
A Blockhead can't think very far

Imagine finding one in your laundry basket
Banging nails in your big black dog

Why bother at all about Blockheads?
Why should you care what they do?
'Cos after all is said and done
You're all Blockheads too!

Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads,
Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads,
Blockheads, Blockheads, Blockheads, (Oh Oi!), Blockheads, (Oh Oi!), Blockheads, (Oh Oi!), Blockheads, (Oh Oi!), Blockheads, (Oh Oi!)

I remember seeing ian dury & the blockheads in dec 1977 before they were famous at the bath pavilion. A workmate who worked as a DJ at the gig said come & see this guy because he's going to be big. Watching him that night I knew he was right. I met him afterwards at a party after doing a bit of roadie work for them The support band was deke leonards iceberg who I had seen before. A great night.

  15. C.... S....

I stumbled upon this album at a record shop in Middletown about 15 years ago. I bought it because I liked the album cover though I had never heard of Ian Dury at the time. after placing the blue record on my turntable, I was blown away.

  16. K.... G....

As a performer he was out of the top drawer, these make today's efforts tame.

  17. S.... S....

Loved it when I first bought it and love probably even more now. Now all sing together children....blockheads!! blockheads!! Blockheads!

  18. C.... ....

Sadly this has been 'cleaned up' - i.e vandalised - for digital release. On my vinyl copy, before the band starts, Dury shouts: "ARSEHOLES, BARSTARDS, F**KING C**TS AND PRICKS!!"

    C.... ....

That's Plaistow Patricia you're thinking of.

    C.... ....

From the same album New Boots and Panties.

  19. S.... H....

ok tried to listen to it, thought the lyrics were crap, liked the instruments.

    S.... H....

Insane. The lyrics are absolute genius.
You obviously didn't grow up in Essex.

    S.... H....

No I grew up in New York

  20. S.... H....

There ok ,I would rather listen to the cramps, misfits , fear ,the exploited, and the dead Kennedys, sorry blockheads just aren't my cup of tea.

    S.... H....

Martin Joyski you tried to insult me because I don't share the same opinion about this music, ha ! and you used British slang, what do you insult everyone that has a different opinion than you,

    S.... H....

@Martin Joyski well you are a sheeple , ha you won't find that definition in the dictionary

    S.... H....

    Did anyone ask your opinion?

    S.... H....

Quite liked all of them - except the exploited - they were just shit - although the only one who has anything like the musical ability and lyrical genius of the Blockheads was the DKs

    S.... H....

I love those bands, but if you can't recognize Ian as a kindred spirit, you're a jackoff.

  21. S.... H....

worst crap I have ever heard kind of like it.

    S.... H....

Listen to the lyrics. They are Shakespearean in their use of language & imagery. The depiction of a whole sub-class of the despised (&, thus despising themselves, can but reject the rest of us) is masterful in its poetry.

    I'm not joking.

    Oi Oi!

    S.... H....

I'm not a big fan of Shakespeare's work (if he even did write those plays) I am more of a Chaucer fan, sorry.

    S.... H....

... and you are now sailed into the north of my lady’s opinion, where you will hang like an icicle on a Dutchman’s beard!

    S.... H....

What? " Whatever your on ,I will take two man" Leo (Chong). Don't get me wrong I like punk, but I was more of a Gothic, and industrial kind of guy, l would rather listen to old Skinny Puppy than the Sex pistols.

  22. D.... T....

it's rock and roll...sadly lacking today....

    D.... T....

Looking forward to seeing who I can offend by playing this loudly in their vicinity :-D

  27. J.... S....

    great poet!

  28. P.... C....

Parties of blockheads with blotched and lagered skin? Blimey, Ian must have spent some time in my neighbourhood!

It reminds me somewhat of "The Bongaloo" by Spike Milligan, both in its rhythm, and in the comical way each work describes its subject. I tried singing the Bongaloo to the tune of Blockheads, and it works.

  29. b.... ....

    still paying for my ring
