Humble Pie - Tin Soldier Lyrics

Come on.

I'm a little tin soldier that wants to jump into your fire
You are a look in your eye, a dream passing by in the sky.

I don't understand
And all I need is treat me like a man
I ain't no child, take me like I am.

(I got to know I belong to you)
(Do anything that you want to do)
(Sing any song that you want me to) sing to you.

I don't need no aggravation
I just got to make you
I just got to make you my occupation.

(I got to know I belong to you)
(Do anything that you want to do)
(Sing any song that you want me to) sing to you.

All I need is your whispered hello
Smiles melting the snow, nothing heard
You eyes are deeper than time
Say a love that won't rhyme without words.

Now I've lost my way
I need help to show me things to say
give me your love before mine fades away.

(I got to know I belong to you)
(Do anything that you want to do)
(Sing any song that you want me to) sing to you.

No, no
No, no
All I need is satisfaction
I just want some reaction
All I want to do is stick with you 'cause I love you.

  8. T.... S....

Saw Humble Pie at the old Amp in Chicago in 72' or 73'.....? One of the best shows I'd ever attended. And loudest.....and rowdy. You could see kids streaming in thru windows, vents and kicked in doors. Why in the world they never achieved a spot at the top of true Rock royalty I'll never know.

Do i dare say the best song ever ?

  18. R.... J....

    Best rock singer ever !

  19. S.... N....

Steve Marriott - never bettered, never even equalled as a vocalist. His talent was unique. His best product came with the Small Faces, a Giant, who, if he had been managed right would have been better than any musician of his generation. Love the man!

  20. A.... c....

I just hit 57 years old and out of nowhere, "found" small faces and humble pie - even though I saw them live in the 70's at St. Albans City Hall. How the hell did I miss them and why don't we make rock n roll like this anymore......

  21. S.... N....

There is, was and ever will be only one Steve Marriott.

  22. C.... V....

this is brilliant love this with my whole soul

  23. p.... r....

    Greatly missed

  24. R.... ....

Steve Marriott was an amazing bundle of talent and is missed greatly. Probably the greatest singer of all time and a very underrated guitarist. An inspiration.

    R.... ....

    Fuck underrated. Stupid ass term.

    R.... ....

    Fuck underrated. BS term.

  25. P.... W....

I absolutely love reading comments like "this is a cover" lol. People are crazy!!! Okay yeah yeah the small faces version may be superior but in context of what was going on in the early 80s you cannot tell me this doesn't kick ass!!

  26. l.... ....

THE sm live version is so cool with the girls choir

    l.... ....

Pic's backing vocalists trio The Blackberries, Billie Barnham, Venetta Fields & Clydie King. Stevie loved his soul sisters.

  27. B.... B....

  29. A.... N....

Rod didn't "take" his band. Steve LEFT the Small Faces.

  30. L.... L....

Rod Sewart got all George Best's cast offs

  31. t.... ....

did a few doobies to this all too many years ago!

  32. D.... J....

Rod Stewart had a GIRLfriend? Well I never.

    AND AT LAST THE WORDS
    BUT I LOVE YOU

  36. f.... ....

the best vcoice, you ever heard. There was only one Steve....

  37. D.... K....

Anyone who cannot appreciate the raw talent and input Steve Marriott carved into Rock n Roll for all time is a total idiot. No excuses.

  38. T.... ....

The original by Small Faces much better, its no Sweet peace and time...)) By the way that big song growes in 1968 and was the only great song by Small Faces for me.

    T.... ....

I don't know. After all of these years, "I Feel Much Better" still brings a smile to my face when I hear it.

  39. J.... G....

    always gave 100%

  40. s.... c....

i dont know where you get the idea that Steve Marriott had a large ego. i was lucky enough to meet him just months before he died, and he was fantastic, charming, funny and friendly. we were snotty kids starting out in a band, and he took time to talk to us. top class geezer and forever missed.

    s.... c....

steve capel I agree the guy never had an ego of sorts but he was very single minded, before he walked out on the Small Faces he tried several times to convince the other band members to let frampton join to fill out the guitar sound with one eye on becoming more of a rock band because he knew that was where the future lay......unfortunately they couldn’t be convinced leaving the door open for the Who and Led Zep to become stadium hoppers The Small Faces could of been up there with them had things been different.

  41. M.... C....

Steve Marriott is rock and roll !!

  42. B.... ....

Humble Pie was the first concert I went to. Back when Peter frampton was something like 17 years old! Warm up band...Montrose! Wow...some great memories there!

Todd Rundgren does a very nice version of this song on his "Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect" album. I'd forgotten that this had been written by Steve.

    R.I.P. Steve...you were truly One-Of-A-Kind.

    B.... ....

That was Clem Clemson. Frampton would have been long gone by the time Montrose was on the scene.

  43. G.... S....

As others have said, it is Humble Pie (with Steve Marriott). The same Steve Marriott from The Small Faces who recorded this song first. So Steve is singing his own song.

  44. G.... S....

    Oh yes. Brilliant.

  45. Z.... L....

Curto esses caras desde 1974, muito som, "Rock and Roll Never Die!"

  46. m.... ....

"where he was changed by growing a large ego."

    You're talking bollocks Chris...

  47. g.... ....

    cover??

  48. L.... L....

This is not a cover, Steve Rock On, you are so missed.

  49. K.... ....

The CBS Orchestra played a few bars of the intro on the show tonight, when Steve Martin was introduced. I spent a half hour trying to remember which song it was! :-)

  50. L.... J....

Possibly the best song ever by anybody..

  51. l.... ....

    cover my ass

  52. s.... ....

I agree Peter, he was the one of the greatest.

  53. o.... r....

he was a great cockney kid, and sadly in the end made it to jump into that fire... R.I.P.

  54. P.... L....

steve marriott was so under rated it is fn unbeliveable his music was from the heart RIP my hero

    P.... L....

    Fuck underrated

  55. k.... ....

Changed by growing a large ego? What the fck do you know? Steve was one of the most grounded people around. Seen and met him after Pie, in the Packet of three days, in a small club 30 miles outside London - nicest fella I ever met. Fuck off with you're ego shit mate.

  56. t.... ....

Not much i like about Humble Pie, I LOVE Small Faces with a passion. I collected all of their songs. Such a sad story for Steve. R.I.P. I hope u play to God everyday.

    t.... ....

I love this live version of the small faces' best ever song!

  57. D.... ....

Steve Marriott had one of the greatest rock & roll voices I ever heard...

  58. T.... ....

@ChrisXRachel Thanks ChrisX. You followed his career also. I LOVE anything Marriott! I was VERY fortunate to see Humble Pie in the 70s. What a GREAT Band!

  59. R.... D....

ah,Steve wanted peter frampton in small faces, they said no, so he quit and started humble pie with frampton

  60. G.... ....

    Best 'Small Faces' song ever.

  61. P.... T....

@Glorify27 i can remember seeing steve marriot afew times at the royal standard walthamstow shortly before his death and after sharing afew drinks with him at the bar i have never come across any musician with less of an ego.he treated the fans like mates and rocked that place.

  62. S.... ....

@angryallotmentlover Not Frampton on guitar if this was recorded in 1980...

    S.... ....

    Bobby Tench on guitar

  63. F.... T....

this is such a brilliant song

  64. T.... ....

Now i have lost my way

  65. s.... ....

This version does miss maclagan and steves vocals are not as good, but still great. But this sound like a live version and still shows off Mariotts talent. Ive never heard this version before thanks for the upload.

  66. a.... ....

This is the 1st time I ever heard Humble Pie play this. I only got to see them once in the 70's in Houston when I was a teen. I am not sure it has been so long but I think they opened for Grand Funk, Unfortunately I was a crispy critter and don't remember a lot of any of it. Blame it on the psychedelic 70s man.

  67. S.... L....

    the man ripmy freind

  68. S.... L....

    the man

  69. d.... M....

    Steve Marriot. The man...

  70. c.... ....

what cigs will do to a good voice

  71. u.... ....

    So good so fine.

  72. h.... ....

    Steve is great. Concurred.
Stevie Wright of The Easybeats should have taken the lead vocals after Bon died in Ac/Dc....

  73. c.... ....

I remember humbie was trying to make a come back in the early 80's with little fanfare. I thought the new album was pretty good. Remembering buying the album long gone now. It had a WW2 aeroplane shot on the cover. I think it was call Victory or something like that............

  74. a.... ....

"One tin soldier rides away... " Watch the movie Billy Jack - for fun, for laughs, for all the connections to the times back then. One Tin Soldier - Coven Lately I've been waking up to : Highway Star - Deep Purple, Things We Used To Know - Jethro Tull, and Better by You, Better than Me - Spooky Tooth; also War Pigs - Black Sabbath. This from a guy who listened to an awful lot of Simon and Garfunkel back then!

  75. J.... M....

    @PokerStuffer

He does have a vey smokey kind of tone to his voice.

  76. c.... ....

I wanted this song for so long and imagine buying this album and getting this chain saw voice instead of the "Fillmore" Steve. He rode that voice to ... well, forever

  77. S.... ....

Its originally by the Small Faces, Steve's band before this one.

  78. x.... ....

    Hi petter8999
Yeah, check Small Faces out. Before forming Humble Pie, this was Steve's previous band - IMHO excellent band. There is a very cool video of Tin Soldier (a TV performance) a colour version with young Steve and PP Arnold. - easy to find - first video in "RELATED VIDEOS" on the right site of this page.

  79. G.... C....

I think it was on Humble Pie's Go For the Throat album

but if you wanna hear the original it is on the Small Faces album Small Faces (US release) or the later released The Autum Stone which was a best of released after they broke up

  80. S.... N....

The BEST vocalist of his generation, Roger Daltrey on a par but lived too long!!

  81. l.... ....

uh there was a guy named JOHN FOGERTY!! that wasnt to shabby either!!

  82. c.... c....

Love Marriott millions. Best singer ever category along with Plant, Dio, Cocker, Gillan and yours. Huge voice, huge talent. Huge loss.

    c.... c....

Have you heard Terry Reid, he's incredible, maybe as good as Steve and that's as good a compliment as can be paid to any singer.

  83. T.... M....

Not strictly a cover if the guy performing it wrote it and sang on the original...but I know what you mean...

  84. B.... ....

Great tune! Humble Pie was the first concert I saw...with Montrose as their opener!

Also...Todd Rundgren does a wonderful cover of this song too!

  85. p.... ....

should be under the Small Faces though not Humble Pie ...
Best song Humble Pie did was was Big
    Black Dog

  86. p.... ....

    the absolute ..

  87. J.... ....

    steve was the king

  88. r.... ....

I really love the opening of this by the small faces. Very cool little piano intro. Look that one up.

  89. T.... F....

    Awesome Marriott

  90. M.... M....

Great Cover but I prefer the organ sound on the original.

  91. E.... ....

    really a great version

  92. z.... ....

Go For the Throat is Mark III Pie. Different bass player I believe. Good album though.

  93. t.... ....

Yeah, i liked the bigger they come also ,from the demo w/frampton.
Steve was great on Easybeats tunes Friday on my mind ,and Good Times.

  94. g.... ....

"Go For The Throat" is probably the better album of the two. "On To Victory" has some good tracks, but the mix isn't very good.

  95. t.... ....

Go for the throat is mk 2 humble pie album this track from, also great version of all shook up,and a great marriott tune teenage anxiety,a top album with bobby tench, sooty jones and jerry shirley. also same period (early 80s the other album with fool for a pretty face," Onwards to victory" gud album..

God bless steve marriott.. vale steve.

    God bless steve marriott....vale...

  96. b.... ....

Awesome version! Does anyone know what Pie album this is from, 'coz I'm gonna have to get this ASAP. Everone talks about Steve's voice and guitar playing (and quite rightly too), but he was a sodding good harp player and so underrated as a songwriter.

  97. D.... F....

My cover band did this song in the 60's. It usually fit in pretty well between Love Me Two Times (Doors) and You Keep Me Hanging On (Vanilla Fudge). And it was a total blast to do.

  98. A.... d....

Thanks for uploading it. He was great amongst the great ones.

  99. t.... ....

yeah there must be a lot of us that have this as number one...the original it never got much better...luv the bulk of steves stuff aspecially the packet o three era ,rock ,soul, blues ,he was pound for pound ,the best...music industry are shiteaters..god bless da mijit..
