Humble Pie - I Walk On Gilded Splinters Lyrics
Some people think they jive me
But I know they must be crazy
Don't see their misfortune
I guess they're just too lazy
My yellow belt of chosen
Ain't afraid of no tomcat
Fill my brains with poison
Walk through the fire
Fly through the smoke
See my enemy
At the end of their rope
Walk on pins and needles
Walk on guilded splinters
With the King of the Zulu
Walk to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Walk to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
I roll out my coffin
Drink poison in my chalice
Pride begins to fade
And you all feel my malice
Put gris-gris on your doorstep
And soon you be in the gutter
Melt your heart like butter
And I can make you stutter
Walk to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Walk to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up

Adam is Right On The Mark. This is what a live show should be. A ride into the lightning!
and to think musicians go out of their way to get this sound in the 21st century...it's been there all along stop over thinking...plug in and let it rip
stevie playing an epiphone dwight..and harmonica ...and that voice!!!! total package ya'll!!! don't make em like that anymore
Tell me that you’re leaving, and I’ve been trying to understand...
The stereo separation of the dueling guitars is fantastic. Makes you believe you are there in the middle.
I think this band was all hype..
fucking troll
This band was the REAL thing, Your Momma....the two guitars and three strong vocallists were hard to match...Greg Ridley was one of the best bass players of all- time and Jerry Shirley was no slouch on the drums...but Marriott and Frampton were hard for any other band to compete with
Theres better grand funk live deep purple live this is ok santanna live.
Theres a live one from 69 better than this one do your home work.
I'd like to know more about that. 🤔
Columbia Records "buy 12 for 1 cent" club, and this was 1...I still have the 2 album set (very very worn...)...it was the the sheer intensity of Marriott that made me listen closer....(I was 14....)....and when the trimmed down Humble Pie appeared in Charlotte,NC ( 1975-ish...) I was there with all of my fried head friends.....
The thing that was so eerie, was listening to Marriott....it was as if I'd loaded the album again.....(...Hello Charlotte!!.....not a fucking Raleigh!!!...)
such a shame the way it ended for him.....but....(taken from Blade Runner...) the candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long.
If you were lucky enough to see Marriott live, it's the perfect epitaph.....he burned Super Nova when on-stage!!...awesome performer...
Hello,
Same Here 63 and Rock On.
Pure.
This is so great. I am very fond of Steve and his bands 😱🎸🎼👻🇫🇷🇨🇭🌺
First saw The Pie at Newcastle City Hall in 1970, Bought this album in 1971 - Still got it, MINT!
I jive you... how the hell were this lot so creative so. Woody and I went to see them at the Coliseum (ENO) London. He's gone now but this goes on... If you stumble on this you've got to give it 10 plus playings and then you can get it....when you do you'll never forget it...Come get it, get it come come! Here's to you Woody!
Gibson Marshall
I saw them at the Rainbow in Finsbury park in 1971 simply amazing. No stupid light shows, smoke clouds or poxy dancers; just raw talent from a time when that was all what mattered
RIP Dr John
Huble Pies S.M Civic 1973!!!!😎🌞🌈
geil ...............
I had the great fortune to see Humble Pie with Frampton!!! Unforgettable!!
Remember putting this on my Craig 8-track player as I fell asleep while I was in HS ‘73 ish.
This is one he'll of live album a double LP the best of Humble Pie
R.I.P Steve and Greg we miss you brother's
saw this band sandwiched between opener Edgar Winter's White Trash and ELP headlining. Honestly, Pie stole the show. Frampton's gotta be one of the most lyrical guitarists... and the combo with Stevie's grit produces an absolutely great band. Cohesion, chemistry counts, of course, but this point's something many bands lack; contrast, artistic tension.
This cut tho is unique in the annals of rock; Roger Steinbrink's comment below says it - it's such an unusual choice, one wouldn't think they'd gravitate to such an outlier. But HP's great feat of "making it their own" as Roger said, is no less an achievement than Jimi's of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." It's an artistic triumph of vision, arranging and execution.
One of my favorite rock 'n roll cuts, and as another commenter said, timeless. I'll just add, looking around at the musical landscape we have today, they sure don't make 'em like this anymore....
People think they jive me,
Know they must be crazy.
I don't see their misfortune,
Guess I'm just too lazy.
Ju suie le grand zomb' baby,
My yellow belt of choison.
Ain't afraid of a she-rat,
Fill my brains with, fill up my brains with poison.
Walk through the fire, children
And you fly through the smoke, oh yeah.#TAB##TAB##TAB##TAB#.
Sssee my enemy on the end of a
On the end, on a rope.
Gris-gris on your doorstep,
And soon you'll be in the gutter, children
Melt melt your heart like butter now,
I can make you, o-o-oh, I can make you ssstutter (Kon)...
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters.
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters (oh yeah).
Why don't you throw away my coffee,
And put poison in my chalice.
That's when pride begins to fade, yeah, oh,
You feel my malice.
Why don't you try walkin' on pins and needles
You will see what they can do.
Now walk on guilded splinters
With the King of the Zulu (yeah, yeah).
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters, oh yeah,
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters (oh yeah).
Went upstairs to pack my,
My leavin' trunk, yeah,
Ain't never seen the ghost whiskey man, yeah,
Just stop and run, no.
I don't need no whiskey, oh
I'm no whiskey man,
Make it stop and run.
A black cat passed through this way-ay,
Hoo yeah, there goes the neighborhood.
Ooh yeah. I'm cryin' now.
Now we have to take it home (oh yeah).
Now we have to take it home.
When we left some with us while we were here.
Yay, yay.
Heyeah! You wanna hear it. Here it is (listen). Get down.
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters, (oh yeah, yeah),
Kon killy, killy kon kon
Walk on guilded splinters, (Yeah my baby).
Thanks...
One of the best live act's ever, great audience and a super band and,
Steve of course !
So cool. You can hear Peter Frampton's distinctive licks which he would later feature in his live album.
Brilliant performance...
They took Dr John's song to another level, classic!
in deed rock & roll @ it's best
3 guys that can play great and also sing great in the same band unheard of
Bought this album in 71 along with the Allman Brothers live at Fillmore and played them constantly for the next year and a half. It's great to hear it again, and I don't think I fully appreciated just how incredible that voice was. Thanks for posting.
There are some bands that are just best left to do studio and then there are those who do their best work performing live and Pie is one of those bands. Absolutely kickass!
Some people think they jive me

(goes on in this vein for the rest of the song)
Peter Frampton with Steve Marriott is as much an excellent co-lead player, co-writer as Rick Springfield on Johnny Winter And... Live! I love both bands with the same intensity! All around perfect, live bands!
Rick Springfield on Johnny Winter's And???? Lmfao. Oh yeah amazing guitar player. Lol.
Rick Derringer.........not Springfield........big difference....lol
my favourite album in 1971 and it still is 1971
This album redefined rock music, everyone copied it, so many riffs were lifted from Frampton and Marriotts jamming, this even gave Thin Lizzy their dual leads, these guys should be at the entrance to R&RHOF, this is beyond brilliant.
You are absolutely correct. This is the height of what Rock-N-Roll was, never to be reach again. This was special to hear and be a part of in our youth. Humble Pie IS the best band ever.
Absolutely blown away
Hear I Don't Need No Doctor, 1972 In 8 Track Was 17 Now 62 Ever Stop Loving It.
I was obsessed with this album from the moment I first heard it back in the day. Steve Marriot's voice was a force of nature. I wish this had been filmed.
It was i think its on cd
Saw these guys when I was 15,Cincinnati Music Hall.Need I say more?😎
Steve Marriott - greatest white soul singer ever!
Next to Terry Kath
Perfection.
Always thought that this was an odd song for them to cover, as it doesn't sound a thing like the good Dr.'s original, but they really took it to another level, and made it their own.
The guitar interplay is just stellar.
Badass Blues Rockers!
my older Bothers wore this Album out when it was passed down to me I played it so many times I wrecked that album one of the greatest bands, today is Steve Marriott's birthday rip !!!!
One of my personal favorite all time albums it makes for a great time from start to finish. Loved the Frampton years of Humble Pie.
best live album at the time when we were stoned and loved being compromised with sex and deep throat action!
was there fanny humble pie Lee Michaels never saw Lee this and orange sunshine had to go
oh yeah
I was in High School when this came out and was completely blown away by the whole album. Ironic that Peter Frampton left soon after to pursue his 5 year long battle to have a solo career.
He left right before Rockin The Filmore was released, because they weren't getting the recognition they deserved - only to learn that 'The Filmore' made them instant icons. ......They'd have surpassed Led Zep as the best Rock Band ever if he stayed.
It's also ironic that Frampton struggled, and his Live Album was his only iconic album. He and Marriott supposedly were getting back together before Steve died.
mydogspet Frampton did have slow years after FCA. Fortunately he rediscovered himself and has been a force for many years. Saw him 2 weeks ago in Tampa. Still a world class rock/blues guitarist. Easily one the 10 best ever.
A Classic song from an all-time live album! 11 thumbs down...up yours! Rip Steve and Greg. 11 thumbs down WTF!
Live at LEEDS and Rockin the Fillmore, 2 Greatest all-time live albums! Rock ON, bro!
Also Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East- Mountain live The Road Goes Ever On
english version of the allman brothers
ROCK ON
i didn't appreciate steve marriot until i was 60 years old. what a great singer. but on this song these two guitar players rock. marriot is great and peter is out of this world
such a great song
I'm taken to a place I've never been and I love the return every time I listen. This is a timeless piece of art and history. These gentlemen were the very fist real hard rockers and nobody, "And I mean, Nobody" can take this from them.
these guys were good. very, very good
Been listening to this for 45 years, and it still knocks me OUT! One of the great things about old, live rock recordings is that they are so long, they never get any air play, they stay fresh. I sure enjoyed this! Thanks for posting, matoast
A jazzy Frampton over some Marriott grit, with one of the two best rhythm sections [Mick Fleetwood and John McVie being the other] classic, "play all night" stuff to be sure. Would certainly like a time machine. Gareth if you can rock even mentally you are still all right man!
The best!
Mit das Beste was je erschienen ist.
Yes it is the best . Ja, es ist das beste, die jemals veröffentlicht.
An all time classic live album i'll be honest with you it's difficult to choose Made In Japan, Humble Pie's Rocking The Fillmore
Ten Years After Recorded Live, UFO Stangers In The Night, Thin Lizzy Live And Dangerous, Lynyrd Skynyrd One More For/From The Road The Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East and the great part of Humble Pie's live album is their 4disc deluxe edition! Made In Japan 40th Anniversary or it was actually 41st Anniversary edition 5discs!! Ten Years After 2discs,
and the Allman Brothers 3disc box set all on bluray!! all great stuff
Zeppelin song remains the same is definitely up there. Allman brother fillmore east 6 cd set is just absurdly amazing. Then you have just about anything Hendrix ever did live, the amount of emotion Hendrix brought to a live show in my opinion is unparalleled
How can you forget Stevie Ray's Montreaux show, or Rory Gallagher's "Irish Tour 74"? Don't forget "Robin Trower Live," "Johnny Winter and..." and the Led Zeppelin live album that also was a movie,"The Song Remains the Same".
what the fuck are you smoking made in Japan and ten years after couldn't carry humble pie's jock!
you must be ducked up man got to admit Humble Pie was great but you can't compare this to Alvin Lee and tya or Richie Blackmor
Genesis - Second's out... Wishbone Ashe - Live Dates also great great Live Albums
Is it just me but I think Peter Frampton on this album is as good as anyone I've ever heard except perhaps Hendrix. Hugely under-rated - why should he care but he's up there.
You'er not alone.I have always felt that way,was at the 2nd show on friday night. Rockin the Fillmore comes 4 shows over 2days in 1971.at that point in time I thought they were the Finest Rock-n-roll band there was. Then Frampton left.
Frampton's playing on this album surpasses anything else he's ever done. By several miles.
Could be considered one of the greatest live songs/performances in rock music history.
+Blackscorpion1963 yes it is
+Blackscorpion1963 I can live with that, particularly the opening sequence upto the harmonic and the sub bass solo, amazing. Saw them at Hyde Park, blew GFR off the stage that day. Very sadly missed. RIP boys.
master piece great sonud , intro guitar amazing , Marriott voice amazing , all group sincro
Def Top 10!
You know your band is godlike when you blow Grand Funk off stage
MARAVILLOSOS
When I first put this album on the turntable it just blew me away! It still has the same effect! I am now 63 and a cripple but can still enjoy one of the best outfits ever.thank you for posting this.
+Gareth Jones Dude -- quality does indeed last forever, doesn't it? (I'm 65 and still KICKIN' IT!!) Rock on brother!! ;-)
+Gareth Jones like Steve (rip) would say "ROCK On"
Yes, Rock on brothers!
cliffyjb - sorry to hear of your knees.... but at least you ain't "living on them" (like being down all the time)... sounds like you know what QUALITY of LIVING is!!!! Rock on Bro!!!!!!!!
This is by far and away my ALL TIME favorite rock/blues album!! I first heard this at age 15 (released in March, 1971) and I fucking loved it!!!
+Robert Newbegin Moi aussi still my all time favourite and i'm not going to be unduly modest. I've heard 'em all.
God bless the Pie for recording this that night at the Fillmore.... And the added blessing of taking us all on the journey this jammin' mooya fooya takes us on..... A classic cover; blood, gutz, sweat, tears, loneliness, solitude, fear, anger, and finally redemption......
@MetalheadYA Yes, an absolute classic. Steve Marriott The Great.....RIP
*"I Walk On Gilded Splinters (Live At Fillmore East / 5/29/71 2nd Show)" by Humble Pie*
+Dennis Healy Rock On Dennis...
My favourite version of the Doctor John classic. Simply mindblowing.
Great track great L P
Amazing song
THANKS ! yes we did !......
NOW WE HAVE A HAPPY SLEEP!
we made it, Dr.John!
In 1971, at age 14 during a sleep over, my buds and we drank our first PBR beers and I was introduced to this album...We played it full blast for 12 straight hours, only taking a break to blow the dust off the needle. It was my intro to jam music..44 years later "splinters' still ranks as the best single jam performance of all time...(Elizabeth Reed at fillmore a close 2nd)....
@Sharon Deal yes, and Whipping Post
+Sharon Deal Kick ass, take no prisoners rock and roll!!!! This album plus seeing them in Philly 3 times in the early 70's
Bob Cardenaz ko
i was 19 teen , agree ! played the lp Hour and hour over ..... wath ' time !
@Erasmo Rene Gonzalez I think it is still in business
This was what a live album should give you. A total ride on a song that takes you aloft. Great job.Great cover.
This reformed rocker played the 8-Track 'til it wouldn't play any more. Simply one of the Top 5 Live Albums ever recorded!
+Dan Barrett Sorry to hear that. 8 tracks ruined a lot of songs for me, in a way. I still can pinpoint the track change on a lot of great songs from listening to them so much.
One of the all time great jams on one of the all time great live albums. RIP Steve and Greg
awesome intro and the rest belongs to History...
Have the vinyl and recorded on reel to reel!! :)
This is from one of my favorite albums from way back in High School in 1975-1976. They were a great band. RIP Steve Marriott.
Thank You for this wonderful tune......
I just brought a copy of Humble Pie's drummer Jerry Shirley's book and it is a definitive fantastic reference to some of music's greatest people....ROCK ON!
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_13?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=jerry%20shirley%20best%20seat%20in%20the%20house&sprefix=jerry+shirley%2Cstripbooks%2C181
I was too young to really appreciate it the first time I heard it (in the late 70's), but it grew on me over time, and now it basically encapsulates everything I love about rock. Forceful, hard, lazy, sexy, stoned, flying, in your fucking face. Music for the ages.
Did I say this before?
This work of electric art is seemingly being rediscovered (via YouTube) as the masterpiece that it so self-evidently is.
Seriously, people: if you like this, then you simply can't go wrong with:
Mountain / Stormy Monday
-from the Columbia Vinyl LP 'The First Great Rock Festivals of the Seventies.'
Rock On.
ps. Crank It Over. It really opens up, like, spatially.
pps. 420BLAZEIT.
+Kevin Kral also Mountain's The Road Goes Ever On album......Nantucket Sleighride. Rock On!
The best of the live album
The best of their carreer !!!
It was like I was there!!! Thank You!!
I couldn't have said it any better.
sensational then - no less so now, >40 years later
only 25 years i bought the album new (still have it) that was 43 years ago (mayve 42) old age lol... anyway still one of the 5 best jams ever......
My Humble Pie and Frampton's favorite moment. Awesome and intense...
Youtube needed this whole version at one shot! Thanks for posting one of the greatest live performaances ever!
Yo - Would some1 Please post the complete album -- Heres a story -- Humble Pie and Yes toured in the 70's together -- we had tickets to see them - the Headliner was Yes -- the Yes album had just been released -- I was so looking forward to the show -- Yes had a equipment truck breakdown and they were a NoShow -- Want a REFUND = no problem -- Steve Marriot thanked us for not leaving -- He promised us He would make it worth our while and that Humble would do an extended show -- AWESOME )*(
Baddest fuckin' live Jam ever recorded in my "Humble" opinion. I have been listening to this for 25 years and it still sends shivers down my spine. Marriots vocals and Framptons playing...need I say more? Peace.
Amen bro the whole album is the greatest live recorded rock album of all time to me an thats not just "Pie in the sky" its a fact of each track!.
I may need to 'Like' this more than once.
(nice to have it complete on one link --- has been a favorite of mine ever since I got into gris-gris)
Come Killer, Killer Come come!
