Humble Pie - Drugstore Cowboy Lyrics

I just came inside, 'Cause there weren't no place to hide
I had no idea Babe, I’d find you here today
Well you can see I was doing fine, Working hard right down the line
Played the holes from Bethnal Green down to LA.

Before you trust me like your brother
There's something in my head I want you to know.

I've been resting, a drugstore cowboy
Higher than a hawk's nest
I was let down by an East End plowboy
Who needed more time to rest, oh
I had to rest and think again.

Well I remember how you tried to explain
(Remember) how you felt the same as me
But you were tied to habit, not a lover. (Remember)
And I guess you came to me 'cause you needed to be free
It's sure good to know girl how we once we loved each other.

But before you take me, before you love me like no other
There's something on my mind I want you to know.

Resting, a drugstore cowboy
Higher than a hawk's nest
Let down by an East End plowboy
Who needed more time to rest
I need more time to think again....

I wanna warn you before you take me for your lover
There's something that if you don't know by now, you ought to know.

Resting, a drugstore cowboy
Higher than a hawk's nest
Let down by an East End plowboy
Who needed more time to rest, oh
And I... my darling, and I thought again
Yes I did, oh look out now!

Smoked a lot of weed to this album.  Hung out with an older guy, Mikey.  He was a Vietnam vet.  Mikey played DJ and taught me that there was much more music than the top 40 stations.  FM was a wasteland back then.  Thanks, Mike...wherever you are!

    S.... B....

@Smokin' Bill lottsa weed and Schlitz tall boyz. i was also a 14 or 15 year old hangin' with the older peeps learnin' the ropes.

    S.... B....

Ah, it's good to have a mentor, isn't it?

    S.... B....

    I had LOTS of mentors...

    S.... B....

@Smokin' Bill It's a thing in a lifetime that not everyone is lucky enough to experience. My mentor's are almost gone now. The one that meant the most to me now has dementia and doesn't know my name when he see's me. It's a heartbreaker. He taught me to ride my own Harley and built it with me every step of the way. He built me a '74 Trans am with a 457. He put me behind the wheel of a dump truck and I was on the job the next day. His name was Gary Wright. Not the one you might be thinking of. I used to say everybody should have a Gary. It's like he's already gone. We smoked a lot of weed and I did all the drinkin while he did the drivin. He was a vet as well. He always made sure I had the best stereo's in my cars. He was my biggest mentor and I miss him even though he's not dead, but he's definitely gone. Not fair to him at all. Be thankful for those older ones who accepted you into their worlds. They must have seen something in you that was worth spending their time on you. Peace

  20. n.... m....

Let's get things straight - the Stones and Humble Pie's 70's boogie rock sound was borrowed from Chuck Berry.

    n.... m....

....and Chuck Berry got it from Muddy Waters and others, and Muddy Waters got it from Son House etc etc - so what!

    n.... m....

Improved the sound they borrowed so as to set a new standard never heard before or matched anywhere by anyone to follow, that is unless some people think the electronic noise in the background of today's hits is really tallent!

  21. k.... ....

Many of the Stones albums of the 70es seem to be inspired by this sound.

  22. c.... ....

wow, to find this in a funk is great. I have dreams about meeting Steve, it's just
something about him... I don't know

This has a Stone's lick, ad I hope Keith has a happy thought about Steve and how it would have been another Marriott/Lane thing with Mick wondering where do I fit. HA

  29. H.... ....

Wow an old band I remember from the 70's I'm so fucking old, still get dilaudids, oxy & opanas & roxy too with benzo's ambiens & that is how we handle our lives still

  30. s.... ....

    Still a mile Stones......rolling......

  31. c.... ....

I like the jam at the end. Marriott was a tunesmith

  32. T.... G....

Having a music history of Steve Marriott, when Steve and the guys recorded this Eat it album it too the 4 months and many nights not to meantion money to complete, since it was self mixed improperly theband had to take a cut back from its sales, they were thinking at the time Eat It was going to be there masterpiece record as it was a follow up from there live one with Peter Frampton at the Fillmore, that was not the case. SIde 1 is far to mono the side two.

  33. H.... ....

What do you mean when you say "out of range?" I heard that Eat It was the first album that Pie mixed as a band, and the different sound is sure noticable. Even some of Steve's vocals are mixed further in the background. The trend of that time was double-albums. Thinking back on it today, most double-albums had a lot of filler stuff that could have been trimmed to make a great single album. Pie's theme for every side was a great idea to help reduce "filler moments."

    H.... ....

Historyguy13 Steve is only in my left ear.

  34. M.... ....

    Pure R&R...long live the Pie!

  35. T.... G....

Hey Thanks for the Jams! A little note about Eat it, the mixing on the trax some were out of range and so not much was done about it,

it was supposed to be there best in sales but was downgraded due to its sound between both records , not much air play.
But I Love the records! Great Memorys and not so good ones (fuzzy) LOL.

    Best Regards- Thomas
