The story goes that Sam Phillips heard something special in the song, that no one else heard, and recorded the man, even though the equipment was half-functional (listen to the distortion of the guitar). He considered it one of his best early discoveries. Like this or not, it's one of the most important songs in the story of what became Rock and Roll a few years later.

This is supposed to be the first song in music history that has a distorted guitar, so it is a piece of history.

That amp is pretty overdriven. Sounds years ahead of its time. The voice sounds like it's coming from a tunnel. Very much like Zeppelin on some of their songs.

In 1987 Moanin' in the Moonlight was given a W.C. Handy Award under the category of "Vintage/Reissue Album (US)"
