Howlin' Wolf - Built For Comfort Lyrics

Some folk built like this
Some folk built like that
But the way I'm built
Don't you call me fat
Because I'm built for comfort
I ain't built for speed
But I got everything
All a good girl need

Some folk rip and roar
Some folk b'lieve in signs
But if you want me baby
You got to take your time
Because I'm built for comfort
I ain't built for speed
But I got everything
All the good girl need

I ain't got no diamonds
I ain't got no gold
But I do have love
To satisfy your soul
Because I'm built for comfort
I ain't built for speed
But I got everything
All a good girl need

As someone who was a fan of Wolf and Sumlin from the mid 60's, this is an example of what pure unadulterated SHIIIT the suits in the front office can conjure. Two American geniuses cut at the knees by pure American cutting edge greed and stupidity. Funkinmind should be sodomized by Barry Manilow.

    Love this

  15. A.... ....

Jesus Christ this album is absolutely brutal, I'm completely confused as to why HW hated it.

    A.... ....

Led Zeppelin at first, for a thousand reasons (see a Killing Floor and Lemon Song question's). And also he don't want the "electric (but only psychedelic) revolution of blues". HW is one of first electric pioneer in blues. This album it's an idea of his discographic company (Chess). Also the co-founder of Chess, Leonard Chess, admit the bad idea of psychedelic cover, also for his songs. But, it's fUntastic and eargasmic listen "Evil" with a Led Zeppelin syncope & accelerations (bass-battery), slightly guitar and HW voice's :D. The groove of this is Led Zeppelin, not HW, and HW have only one personality. Her!

    A.... ....

One the most badasseded track on the most badassnessed blues album, of all time.

    A.... ....

he was always tripping in heroin heavily, probably he hated cu´s he didn´t rememberd it!

    S.... S....

MODERN COMMUNIC. GIVES NICHT THE PRETEN.. FEEL..

  19. S.... S....

    Hoch die Daumen

  20. s.... ....

3 words- Pete Fucking Cosey (RIP)

  21. H.... ....

did I read in the Guralnick book that Wolf described these psychedelic recordings as 'birdshit'?

    H.... ....

Yeah he also said this album was "dog shit" !
But he was one of the first bluesmen having a fully electrical band. So he didn't hate  his electric guitar. He liked it very much. :)

  22. F.... Y....

I can just imagine Wolf did not like that Fuzz-toned guitar at All..to say nuthin'of the Wah- wah....
I bet he pitched a fit. I think there really is a little too much going on in the guitar area.... they could have eliminated
one or two guitar parts and not hurt this at all..sounds like the soloists are all competing w/ each other. Too damn busy !!

    F.... Y....

@Forque YU Gugle I love the album as it's heavy and dirty, but I certainly agree that the person who was playing the wah guitar could have done things a lot better. They're all over the place and don't really respect the rhythm of the songs were are pretty funky.

    F.... Y....

UFO covered this in a simpler way

    F.... Y....

I love this song and didn't feel like anything was out of place. It just seemed to mesh and an amazing, brilliant song is what was produced.

  23. v.... g....

i gotta that fuking blues on my soul yehaa

  24. J.... ....

    love the drums in this

  25. g.... ....

    Yeah .. Great stuff ..  Learned this One from UFO ! .. Brit Metal .. from back in the DAY !! . :) . Also a Great Cover ! .. ;) > Rock it WOLF !! ..

  26. T.... R....

Wolf HATED this album!  He called it "dog shit."  He was also offended by the cover because he was one of the first bluesmen to start using an electric guitar.

The album was an utter fiasco re: sales.  Chess blamed the poor sales on the idiotic album cover.  He thought it was clever.  But he figured out that you can't put a negative review of an album on the cover, from the artist himself no less.

    T.... R....

thats a true (wikipedia confirmed) fact. but it's still awesome.

    T.... R....

So post-modern. It's an art, that cover.

  27. E.... C....

I know the wolf hated this but these arrangements are priceless. Evil and Built for Comfort just crank. this is so much better than london sessions

  28. L.... C....

Amen. a bbking wannabe on guitar and wolfs vocals. This is funking terrible

    L.... C....

Louis Caldwell doesn't sound like he's trying to sound like bb. Bb used major with minor pentatonic scales to write most of his licks. This guy sounds like Freddie King

    L.... C....

The wolf is miles away better than bbking

  29. t.... ....

No wonder the Wolf didn't like it, it does sound like dog sh!t. Over-the-top. Apart from his vocals, it sounds like the soundtrack to a John Holmes flick.

  30. J.... U....

    Funk, funk, funk ´nuff said!

  31. J.... B....

UFO should be one of the biggest bands in rock. They are so underrated.

  32. p.... ....

Super geil - endlich wieder diese Version!

  33. R.... W....

love this song but hate this version

  34. J.... A....

Wow not the version I was looking for but this is awesome!! :)

  35. T.... D....

    Dog Sh*t...

  36. w.... ....

    Brilliant!

What else if there to say?

  37. B.... ....

There are a couple of good song on there. This was Johnny Winter's project to get Mudddy into the mainstream of rock as well as just being known as a blues master. I think it's OK, but not groundbreaking or anything.. I was an experimental record and with Muddy on it, it's always worth listening to.

  38. B.... ....

But the true blues pursits don't like it. I had to ask my guitar player last night during my sel to turn the effects off, as that's not what I was doing right then. You never NEED a fuzz pedal. I remember when the 1st ones came out and I bought one for guitar and even used it on bass, but never on the blues.

  39. B.... ....

Yup.The Chicago blues were definitely meant for the pure blues. I like blues with effects too, but I still prefer the pure, no effects style.Working with Walter Trout now,was my goal when I returned to the music business & the blues a month ago, my goal was to back up Walter on bass, & I'm getting closer & making the right connections every day and I WILL reach my goal at some point. I've had other good paying offers, but they weren't for the blues & I turned them all down.

  40. D.... H....

    The best..

  41. d.... ....

...cause I built For comfort...I ain't built for speed...

  42. M.... ....

okay..so as much as i love music..i am baffled..i 1st heard Hoyt Axton do this song in the movie "Heart Like a Wheel" the true story of Shirley Cha-Cha Muldowney, 1st woman to drive funny cars..out of New York..Bonnie Bedelia played her part. Awesome movie..but I could never find this song anywhere. Now i have found it, & feel quite embarrassed. ugh!!! Loving Z.Z. Hill, B.B. King etc. should have known it would of been a natural blues song...lol

  43. C.... D....

When I was 14 this was one of my favorite albums, along with East West (Butterfield) and Absolutely Free (Zappa). Still love em!

  44. d.... ....

I NEED & WANT a FUZZ Pedal like this ! The Electric Bass was around in the 1930`s ala Electro-String Co. & Doc Kaufman

  45. G.... ....

It's hard to believe Wolf hated the music this much and still put so much into his singing, 'cuz it's wonderful as usual. But I could sure imagine him having mixed feelings on going this way. And I've heard parts of Electric Mudd that are pretty damn good. These two guys were brilliant at adapting to new stuff. Coming up from the south, I doubt if they ever heard of an electric guitar, for one example. The electric bass hadn't been invented yet (1948, Leo Fender.) It's just hard to imagine.

  46. a.... ....

    never argue with a wot-viler !!!
    or a wolf !

  47. a.... ....

    never argue with a wot-viler !!!

  48. d.... ....

this is great blues, i love the london sessions too, if you like this check out muddy waters after the rain a real gem ( and avoid electricmud at all cost )

  49. e.... ....

    had the same thought

  50. J.... K....

I just got my copy of this album in the mail yesterday. I bought Electric Mudd also, but I like this album way better!

  51. T.... J....

@bok255 i think it is.. also i think their music is kinda inspired by this (and the electric mud) album. (like magic potion lot better then brothers though don't like the organ playin)

  52. o.... ....

this cut aint to bad but it aint the wolf... too too something. i know, not the wolf.

  53. L.... ....

    I'd die to own this

  54. S.... P....

    @qsergyuko wow your polite

  55. S.... P....

@johnwaynesfoot i think he thinks that you were saying you were there

  56. j.... ....

@qsergyuko Huh? I don't see why you think I'm disrespecting Howlin' Wolf. I just quoted an interview with Pete Cosey, probably the only musician to play with both Wolf and Miles. You can find this interview, by Bill Milkowski for JazzTimes, by doing a search on "Howlin' Wolf" and "Pete Cosey"... Were you thrown by my failure to use quotation marks after "Cosey says"? If so, sorry. Have a nice day.

  57. R.... k....

can anyone please help me find this album?

  58. h.... ....

    @johnwaynesfoot would love to see those photos... there's a "Scowlin' Wolf"™ on my website howlingwolfphotos and am glad was not me he was scowling at that night;
hearing this again. those heavy crashing cymbals are what really hurt this cut.Wolf had a minimalist (intentional) blended style of instrumental teamwork even when it seemed not so. The psychedelic stuff would have been better in this vein in my opinion. THe beard sounds cool enough :)

  59. h.... ....

Wolf DID like his electric guitar, actually... and also...was NOT against "psychedelic" versions of his work. When Jimi Hendrix came to finally achieve his life's dream of jamming with Wolf , Wolf offered him a job. It's this album... the way the effects and Wolf's art DON'T blend... this song is not the worst, some on this album remind me of Mod Squad faux psychedelic. I played with Wolf and sometimes played blues in blues-rock form with Mike Wilhelm and John Cippolina, partly psychedelic

  60. e.... r....

    stil Bangin' like a motha.

  61. t.... a....

the best version of this song anywhere!!!

  62. g.... ....

Love the Blues - Love this album! Wolf is freakin' out with the Psych-Funk Rock Blues. Good stuff!

  63. t.... ....

What a load of narrow-minded snobbery. Just because a piece of music is not a badly recorded old black guy playing an acoustic guitar does not make it bad. Mr. Wolf got it wrong too, it's a masterpiece of an album. Few artists manage to successfully cross genres and it's a testament to his genius that he recorded an entire album full of killer songs.

  64. s.... ....

i don't care for this either....but i also am glad he made the record, if it helps to turn more people on the the Blues.

  65. G.... ....

I have this album and love it. But i'm not a "blues purist."

  66. j.... ....

Anyway, I had a really long beard during those days; it was like down to the navel and Id sometimes braid it. So on one occasion during the session, Wolf walks up to me and says in that raspy voice of his, Why dont you take them wah-wahs and all that other shit and go throw it off into the lake on your way to the barbershop? I mean, he just wiped me out with one stroke, man! Covered all the territory—the long hair, the beard, the wah-wahs and the whole deal.

  67. j.... ....

As (Pete) Cosey says of that memorable session: Wolf was outraged when we were cutting. Muddy only showed a bit of doubt during his sessions but the Wolf was furious. I had all my gadgets at the session—a Jordan Bosstone distortion pedal, a couple of wah-wah pedals and an Echoplex—and, man, he didnt want to hear that at all! I have some pictures of that session and he was scowling pretty bad at me in a few. "

  68. f.... ....

OK, I'm no expert on the man (my late father was a huge fan), but I like this LOTS. Thanks for posting.
