Horton, Johnny - Lost Highway Lyrics

I'm a rolling stone all alone and lost
For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
He's just another guy on the lost highway

I was just a lad nearly twenty two
Neither good nor bad just a kid like you
And now I'm lost too late to pray
Lord, I've paid the cost on the lost highway

Now boys don't start to run around
On this road of sin or you're sorrow bound
Take my advice or you'll curse the day
You started rolling down that lost highway
(Lost highway)

Horton, Johnny Lost Highway Comments
  1. L.... C....

You should hear the Hank Williams Sr version.

  2. E.... H....

Johnny Horton does an excellent rendition of this song. He really sings it. But Hank makes you FEEL it, believe it. Hank reaches a shanking cold hand into your soul and takes a piece of it that you may never get back. I love me some Johnny Horton, but Hanks Lost Highway is more than just a song, it’s a dark, lonely experience.

A nice song my friend all the best to you from Tony Bolton a singer on YouTube.

  4. S.... B....

Awesome recording by the late, great Johnny Horton. 1925 - 1960. May he Rest In Peace. Smokey Binion, Jr.

  5. J.... B....

    awesome

  6. J.... H....

    Great version.

Sadly Johnny was taken from us too soon but he left a wealth of brilliant songs. Thanks to Youtube we can hear them again. The number of views on Youtube show that he still enjoys amazing popularity which he truly deserves. I grew up listening to his songs in the early 1960s when I was in my teens. Thanks for posting this.

Lost Highway is a Hank Williams song that Johnny Horton recorded.  Horton slowed the song down and added a good lead guitar.  It is nearly as good as Hank's original and that saying more than I would usually say about any Hank Williams song.  Horton just made this song into a song that was more a ballad than what Hank did.  In my mind, Horton did an great job on this song with only a few minor chances.

Guys/Gals.... don't kid yourselves. Johnny Horton was great and everything--Hell, he got Ol' Hank's Billie Jean once Hank died. But don't ever, ever, NEVER say that this version is better than any of Hank Sr.'s versions of this song!

    ....Done bumped your heads, I reckon. [;

  10. L.... K....

  11. M.... M....

Hank Williams war, ist und bleibt unerreichbar, auch wenn Johnny Hortons sehr gut ist !!!

My mom ran a club that Johnny had played. That night she brought home an autograph Johnny Horton wrote for me. How awesome was that? He was a favorite then and now.

John R CASH and Johnny Horton were big pals. Johnny Horton died
In an accident 1960. His death was an horrific loss for John R CASH. RIP JRC and Johnny Horton /CD

  21. C.... D....

Hank Williams and Johnny Horton and Tom Petty!!!! All of them delivered very fine renditions of this beautiful song. Can't say which one I favor most. /CD

  26. j.... r....

Yes, it’s good, but listen to The Waterboys version. Tom Petty does a great version also. Well he would, wouldn’t he.

  27. l.... ....

Johnny Horton, what can I say, one the greatest voices of country music. This cover is by far the best.

  28. M.... L....

Johnny was a great artist, but the pain in Hank’s voice was real.

  29. I.... F....

This is the best version of Lost Highway- may Johnny's music never die!

  31. I.... F....

Is there no ending to this mans talent? He was up there with the best country singers ever!

  32. a.... l....

    Great cover Hank Williams!!!

  33. G.... ....

It's fine, but I'll take Hanks if I had a choice.

  34. B.... P....

His voice does not need the choral singing in the background

  35. j.... ....

I DO ENJOY JOHNNY HORTON'S MUSIC, BUT EVEN TOM PETTY DID BETTER THAN HE DID ON THIS SONG!

    j.... ....

jehovahuponyou You obviously don't know good singing when you hear it. Johnny Horton did not sing any songs that weren't great.

    j.... ....

    DEAR MADY PADY,
OBVIOUSLY YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MANY SONGS A RECORDING ARTIST MAKES, JUST TO FIND THE "RIGHT ONE" OR TO FILL UP AN ALBUM, EVEN THE KRANG ELVOILA PRODUCED A FEW LEMONS - J. HORTON'S RENDITION OF LOST HIGHWAY WAS ONE SUCH OF J. HORTON'S LEMONS.

NOW YOU ARE DISMISSED TO GO OIL YOUR TIN EARS, ALL THREE OF THEM.

    j.... ....

jehovahuponyou Did you get an award for being a smartass? And who anointed you a music critic?

    j.... ....

THE SAME PEOPLE WHO GAVE ME MY SMARTASS AWARD ALSO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO PONTIFICATE TO THE REST OF US WHAT MUSIC WE SHOULD LIKE OR DISLIKE.

YOU POSTED TO ME: "jehovahuponyou You obviously don't know good singing when you hear it. Johnny Horton did not sing any songs that weren't great.". SO DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT BEING A MUSIC CRITIC - I WILL LIKE AND LISTEN TO WHAT I LIKE, I WILL EXPLORE MANT GENRES OF MUSIC AND ARTIST, THEN I WILL POST WHAT I THINK (THIS WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO DO!) - SO, TALK TO YOURSELF ABOUT BEING A PONTIFICATEING JACKASS!

WE ALL LIKE THE MUSIC WE LIKE, THE COLORS WE LIKE, ETC. TO INFINITY - WE ARE ALL CRITICS OF WHAT WE LIKE AND DISLIKE, AND HAVE OUR OWN REASONS FOR BEING SO - DON'T BE SO DAFT, DON'T PAINT WITH SUCH A WIDE BRUSH, DON'T TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD LIKE OR DISLIKE - DON'T BE THE POPE ON A RAG - AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE, STFU!

  36. B.... 6....

it doesn't get much better than this.....beautifully laid back song.

  37. P.... A....

Great voice thanks for the upload this is my favorite of all those who have covered it.

  38. D.... B....

This is a great cover of the Leon Payne song. I like Ernest Tubb's version the best. Hank did a good job on this as well.

  39. J.... S....

this is the best cover. some how this lost highway feels North somewhere.

  40. K.... C....

what a great singer songwriter life cut short need to be kept alive. with his great music

  41. d.... s....

Johnny Horton was a great talent. He could make most songs sound real good and this is another example of that.

  42. R.... p....

I believe that Johnny Horton brought out a different sound than Hank both our great  but I believe Johnny Horton Knocked this one out of the park !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. M.... J....

I love this old tune. This is the only version I've heard.

    M.... J....

My mama used to play all the Johnny's (Horton, Cash, and Paycheck).

The payoff for me? A lifetime of classic country songs. Thanks mom.

    M.... J....

    what bout tillotson?

  44. J.... M....

    nádherná píseň...

  45. P.... K....

Every once in a while I like a cover even better than a great original.

  46. R.... D....

    What is the cost?

    R.... D....

Loss, addiction sorrow. So tangled up in booze, pills and addiction you can't get out. That's what hank williams the original artist meant.

    R.... D....

jc6621 Leon Payne was the artist who wrote the song.

    R.... D....

    Roul Duke Torment, addiction sorrow.

    R.... D....

    jc6621 I heard that in Hunter S. Thompson's voice.

  47. T.... D....

hank lived this song. ..you could tell. this version is pop sugar

    T.... D....

+Tim Denman This version IS NOT POP SUGAR. Johnny Horton was every bit as good as Hank Sr...I love them both and love both versions.

    T.... D....

To me, there is Hank....and then everyone else. Hank was and is the source from where all music starts.

    T.... D....

I agree. Hank is the granddaddy of modern popular music let alone country music!

    T.... D....

Harrison Hedges he is the dad

  48. C.... R....

i love this version better than Hank sr tbh

    C.... R....

sorry i can't agree with you it's good but it can't compare.

    C.... R....

@Christopher Dibble Agree with you. Johnny Horton has a much more polished voice, but Hank put his entire soul into his rendition of this song. You could actually feel Hank's pain when he sung it.

    C.... R....

@centuryrox you sure got that right century i see you are a true country man( chris)

  49. R.... B....

In my estimation this is by far the best rendition of lost highway.

With the exception of the overuse of the background vocal group, this is an awesome cover. Johnny Horton is awesome!

  70. J.... F....

It's the only professional I've ever heard cover "Lost Highway" and I really like it, but I do think Hank does it better.

  71. A.... L....
