Hornsby, Bruce - The River Runs Low Lyrics

The rain held back again
Haven't felt a drop since you went away
Outside of town, the hills are brown
I guess way out there you'd call 'em golden
Lines outside the welfare store
The clock is stopped at the bank next door
They yelled like hell when the boys left home
Now just like you, they're all gone

The river runs low tonight
And eyes are closed on the waterline
The river runs low tonight
And you're always drifting through my mind
The river runs low tonight
And nobody waits for the tide to rise
I'm gonna wait till you make
The river run high

Whoa-oh...Whoa, oooh...
The old man's gettin' on
Keeps the morning paper in his overcoat
It keeps him warm in the cold storm
And he told me today I look a little lonely
Up in the air they're heading south
The sky is light to the west of town
With a little cash I could get around
You know I'd come out there and find you

Whoa...
The river runs low tonight
And eyes are closed on the waterline
The river runs low tonight
And you're always drifting through my mind
The river runs low tonight
And nobody waits for the tide to rise
But I'm gonna wait till you make
The river run high

Whoa-oh...Whoa, oooh...Whoa-oh....

Up in the air they're heading south
The sky is light to the west of town
With a little cash I could get around
You know I'd come out there and find you

Whoa...
The river runs low tonight
And eyes are closed on the waterline
The river runs low tonight
And you're always drifting through my mind
The river runs low tonight
And nobody waits for the tide to rise
I'm gonna wait till you make
The river run high

Whoa-oh-oh...Whoa, oooh...oooooo...la-laaa....

  8. Richard Solis

  9. M P

    I love this song!!

  10. Randy Piquette

    great song...meaningful

  11. James Feuilherade

Yeah we all have the "big one that got away".....this reminds me of her....

  12. James Feuilherade

Yeah this album is a stand alone classic! It will still sound good twenty years from now...Awesome!

    Antonio Cognato

James Feuilherade 32 years old already and sounds great

  13. Vincent Hopwood

This song always reminds me of a whirlwind romance I had with a girl from California when I was younger. When her vacation was over, she returned home and I never saw her again. If I had had a little cash at the time, I would have gone out there to find her. :/

    pankfan60

With probably the same result as our friend in the song, sadly...Hope you found another...

    troy glomski

Had the same experience in Summer of 85. I still wonder where she may be, and how she's doing now days.

    Bloke_19xx

Me too...Summer of '85. Dating a girl who I had no business dating (I was way out of her league). Always knew we weren't meant to be, but I still miss her.

  14. feilong

Why would someone dislike this song😔.

    Vlaid65

Sometimes you hear but don't listen.

I was stationed in Norfolk, VA for 4 years while in the Navy and saw lots of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay and understand where Bruce got his influences when writing lyrics; such a great place when you go down the beaten path. Getting close to 50 years old this song rings a bell for me now and as the saying goes......Get busy living or get busy dying.

    Bloke_19xx

Sorry you experienced that, brother. Some people don' t realize how lucky they have it. THANK YOU for your service. Cheers and good health to you!

    Patrick O'Donnell

Never been looks like a beautiful place. Starting from around there going south following the shore line through the Carolinas and Georgia into Jacksonville FL is something I have always dreamed about.

    Bloke_19xx

Sounds like a road trip needs to be forged. Safe travels, Sir. Cheers!

    olentangy74

I spent 6 years in Hampton roads and I loved it. The thing is, is that I got out and saw. The James river, the Chesapeake bay, colonial Williamsburg, Revolutionary war and civil war sites. a lot to do there.
Like any duty station, it is all what you make it.

    David Butcher

I'm from the original Norfolk and I love him to bits and so looking forward to the gig in Shepherds Bush next week

  16. questkid73

    w Scott caywood

    Shannon Trabosh

I love Bruce Hornsby. Amazing vocals and he has mad piano playing skills! Mandolin Rain is my all time favorite of his though! Love them all though! Never get tired of listening to these songs. Easy listening for sure.

    MrBigrobmjca3

Let’s not forget The Long Race, Down That Road Tonight, And last but not least the ending of The Red Plains.

  17. Eugene, OR.

My river is running low tonight.

  18. vaughn22

I always cry when I hear this song. My wife has left me to live on the streets of California. Now I am in California and she is in Oregon!

    vaughn22

Thanks. I did not think anyone would get my post. the song says  I haven't felt a drop since you went away" And you're always drifting through my mind" "with a little cash I could get around; I would come out there and find you" I drove from Houston, Texas to Santa Cruz, Ca, about 3x trying to find her. I found her once in a homeless camp in Santa Cruz. She was living in a tent with several other guys.

    vaughn22

@***** You are so right. I think I never did really know my wife. She was only 18 and did not know much about life yet. Many friends told me she would go around the block (metaphorically) a few times more before she would even think about being faithful to me. And, even my best friend told me that I could not trust him when it came to having sex with my wife! She was homeless, and I was trying to fix that.  My best friend! And when I was incarcerated once, this "friend" talked her into pawning her wedding ring ( a family heirloom) Unbelievable!

    John Brault

    @vaughn22 Wow! Just Wow!!!!

    John Hattabaugh

+vaughn22 time to move on, my friend. sad as it maybe.

    Patrick O'Donnell

I don't think homeless infidelity was what Bruce had in mind here.

  19. Blaire Ronzel

My cassette has a different mix with drums on this.

    Daman Yocum

I still have this album on cassette too-and I would agree

    1로마교회에서 만든 삼위일체와 신약성경
