Hornsby, Bruce - On The Western Skyline Lyrics

About this time of evening, out by the bay
They turn the roadlights on the bridge
Well, a diesel rolls in silhouette, eastbound
Lovers glad the sun has set

I'm staring into twilight
Wishing I could find someone tonight

I know she's out there somewhere
On the western skyline
Lonely women say a prayer
On the western skyline

The rooftops sag on Second Street
Bachelor's quarters
Too much fun, not enough dough
Well, the kite's still hanging on the wire
Waiting on the wind
Too many dreams, not enough hope

Voices on my radio
Telling me where I should go

I know she's out there somewhere (Somewhere)
On the western skyline
Lonely women say a prayer (Say a prayer)
On the western skyline

They'll set up on the bandstand
When the sailors hear the whistle blow
Underneath the streetlight
Violence in the afterglow

Give me a shiny Cadillac
And close your eyes past that city limits sign
Well, he's got the admiral's daughter
He's got her in the back
Trying to cross her battle line

As I'm staring into twilight
Wishing I could be with her tonight

Whoa, oh
I know she's out there somewhere (Somewhere)
On the western skyline
Lonely women say a prayer (Say a prayer)
On the western skyline (Whoa-oa!)

I know she's out there somewhere
On the western skyline

i know many think american country songs are cringe but i like them, not all of them, i like that old time rock n roll. the guitars and drums just sound better.

  2. Rhys Morgan

and the line in the lyric about the admiral's daughter- brings me back to navel cadet school in flordia!!

  3. Dean Ladue

Such a fun song to listen to, and the guitar riffs are spot on! And very uplifting. Well done Bruce!! 👍👍

  4. It's My Life

An amazing song from a truly great album, created by a really talented and good-rocking band!!! Thanks for this and all of the other awesome music that you gave to us!!!
    :-)

  5. VAWBC Carrie

This song truly makes sense if you’re ever stuck in traffic during evening rush hour on the hampton roads bridge or Chesapeake bay bridge tunnels

  6. Dale Green Bear

Ekoostik Hookah owes most of their catalogue to The Bruce Hornsby Sound. Especially this tune. Most of you probably dont know Ekoostik Hookah but they are a college band from Ohio. Their originals sound a lot like a many Hornsby songs. In my mind at least

  7. Sufimoor

    "Give me shinny Cadillac!!" :)

  8. A Coronado

Originally from Hampton, VA and all his songs just remind me of my childhood there! Hearing his songs on 2WD and Z104

  9. ItsJustJodie Love

    Ah yesssss..white water summer nostalgia....

  10. Michael Feeney

    Vic... VIC!

  11. Taylor Ahern

The degree to which one is swept up & along with this beautifully melodic, whimsically uplifting Bruce Hornsby song (just about the most sublime admixture of folk & pop that my ears can attest to) would prove quite the measure of the general awesomeness & openness of one's soul......of one's natural merriment......of the expanse of one's imagination......the depth & poignancy of any moments of loving reflection that most engage in periodically......the purity & freshness of any upbeat rapture that stirs deep within......the buoyancy of their spirits......&, to a Good Degree, this timeless classic proves the meaure of the amount of love spreading throughout one's Heart at any given moment, sweetly endearing & magically healing that it is......
in its soulful yearning, celebratory reverie, feeling of real hope & promise, & in its transcendent sense of freedom, all that this amazingly simple, measured yet powerfully moving masterpiece conveys, & means to me, from the depths of my soul to the euphoric pinnacle of my conscious awareness❤❤😃😃😊😊👍👍

I was driving West on I-40 coming into Albuquerque in 1996 with beat up old pick-up truck after driving west all day from San Angelo, TX trying to beat the sun. It was an amazing sight and this song just happened to be blaring on the am/fm radio. Good days.

    gcHK47

Similar to my experience. Driving west through the Arizona/Southern California desert at night to try and reach Santa Clarita before midnight. Not long after the sun sets, my father puts this CD in, and I hear the song for the first time.

  58. paul zawertany

This cd was mid late 80s. Not 1990s.

    It's My Life

    Yes, released in 1986.

    Xennial Hipster

Its actually ahead of its time to me, It sounds like a mature, adult contemporary kind of 90s alternative pop/rock. I think many of these album tracks would've been MORE popular in, say 1994 instead of 86-87.

    Bloke_19xx

Very true...they were well ahead of their time.

  59. Gregory Guarino

BH just kills it man. A true American songwriter.... Real, legit, Sings from the heart. Respects the game. Much respect to you and your band. Can't believe this album is as old as I am.

    gcHK47

No other musician captured the spirit of Blue Collar America.

Don’t even mention Springsteen, he was off by a light year.

    It's My Life

@Gregory Guarino, I agree with everything you said. I'm a little older than you and clearly remember hearing these guy's songs on the radio as a kid, back in the day! They sounded great back then, and still sound just as great now, to me. Bruce and The Range were a great band! I hope they will do a reunion some day!! :)
    Cheers man!

  60. Joey Badabing

Man this stuff is just killer. A feeling that no other record provokes. I love it

    It's My Life

Yes, this is an amazing album! No doubt about that at all. Some of my favorite songs of all time are on this album. And all the songs on it are great!

    Edgar Poe

    I agree

  61. Roger Meatcheese

Bruce Hornsby is OUR multii-generation's Aaron Copeland.
    An American songwriter.

  62. Caroline Cole

The way it is was just a suck up song .listen to it carefully you'll see what I mean.
