Honey Cone - The Day I Found Myself Lyrics

There's probably a lot of you girls out there
Hung up on a man and you're caught in that old
Familiar way of wanting someone who don't want you
You know, men are full of schemes
And they're masters of getting control of our minds
And making us dependent on them
Hmm! Well, girls
I was in that weaken boat on trouble waters for years
And believe me, I've been through it all
But this fool got wise
I remember the man I used to love or thought I loved
He used to treat me in any old way
But still I love the ground he walked on
I was blind as a bat, and I couldn't see for looking
And when he left, I thought my world ended
But you know, time soon healed my wounds
And I've found my new beginning
I just wish he was here so I could tell him

As I look back on the day you left me
I felt that love had forsaken me
As time went by, tears began to dry
Now I see you never really cared
Life is wonderful when love is shared

The day that I lost you that's the day I found myself

Your love controlled, but never consoled me
I was in love, but so unhappy
So many nights, I was in the cold
When you left, you opened up the door
To a world I'd never seen before

The day that I lost you that's the day I found myself

I found love with someone who needs me
I'm loving life the way it should be
I gave you love, you only used me
And when you left, you hurt yourself
I found identity with someone else

The day that I lost you that's the day I found myself

Now don't you know that you only hurt yourself
I'm so glad you're gone 'cause you made me strong
Oh, bless the day you left
'Cause that's the day I found myself

The day that I lost you that's the day I found myself
You better believe it, now

Wben it comes t[oo girl groups theese ladies and the Pointer Sisters along with The Chantels reined supreme (pun intended just listen to that harmony. We thought the musiic would never end so Iguess we just took it for granted. If Hip Hop or Rap was an progression instead of an regression maybe I could accept it. The same thing happend when Do wop was replaced with RB and Rock.Do Wop itself replaced Jazz.Yet this Hip Hop or Rap just havent been able to grasp it. Maybe if they didnt just talk there way to stardom and become millionaires overnight. Maybe if they used intruments.Back in the day as they put it you had to be able to sing. Jay Zee,Beyonce,Justin Beiber them couldn't even get airplay less alone become millionaires. Beyonce at best is just a backup singer while The Honeycomb had three capable lead singer that could out sing her. Edna the lead singer had one of those once in a life time singer and like Diana Ross was commercial. But the other two beautiful youn ladies were just as good.Unlike The Supremes who they would leave in the wind.Just like The Pointers or the Chantells who harmony was just perfect but with the advent of RB and Rock Do Wop got lost A shame as theese artist were awesome.Jazz was my parents music and it and Do Wop were listened to by my RB, Rock generation.Jazz was started by blacks as well as Do Wop (which was called race music) during it's conception later RB.As well as Rap which they have started calling Hip Hop wonder why? Even I can see that's just rap with a little singing with the aide of autotune..

The Funk brothers applying their skills behind a talented squad of ladies in the seventies.

    j.... c....

How can this be the Funk Brothers when these ladies recorded for Hotwax Records, a record label created by songwriters/producers Holland–Dozier–Holland in 1968 when they left Motown Records? Lawsuits were filed on behalf of both parties because of the departure. I don't see how this can be Motown's Funk Brothers on a 1972 Hot Wax recording.

I was 17 and had gone to the "Junior Prom" with Miss Debra Anita Moon (whom we sweetly called Debra "DAM".) This song reminds me greatly of taking Debra home to meet my Mom and the rest. We lived in the Cabrini Green Housing Projects and even today I thank the LORD JESUS, every time I think of the so many times HE gave me my life back. GOD BLESS!!!

  51. M.... ....

A "Supremely" talented girl group of the early 70s, I own every record on vinyl, and now because of the British, I no longer have to play them.  Complete recordings available because the British revere our R&B so much more than we do.

    M.... ....

MetFan37 very true - the UK Northern Soul scene is thriving, we love American soul music like this from the 60s & 70s.

    M.... ....

MetFan37 Yes we do love real Soul music from the USA. I'm in my 60s and have loved Soul since I was 15. It's criminal how many Soul singers haven't seen the light of day even in their own towns and cities. Thankfully many have been brought over to the UK to perform for people who, like me, idolise them.

Wow! This is a great song! I wish the Honey Cone would re-make this song for 2013-2014. Many young girls need to hear this message. Heck "EVERYONE" needs to hear this message. Love this song! Thanks for posting it.

  63. T.... ....

Caroline the girl in the middle, Shelly on the left and Edna Wright the girl on the right the lead sing. The Honey Cone...Oh boy those girl were the stuff back in 1971 through 1975. They had a number of hits and was one the first artist on SOUL TRAIN with Gladys Knight and the PIPS and EDDIE Kendricks from the Temptations........

    T.... ....

A song about self-discovery and liberation - Edna Wright is Darlene Loves' sister.

  64. T.... ....

The girl in the middle does look like Kelly, I believe her name is Caroline, Shelley and the lead singer is "Edna Wright. They were great singers in their own right, just a little before their d the Sonny and Cher Show. I know that Edna still perform with other singers as the the Honey
    Cone.

    T.... ....

ToneyT she looks nothing like Kelly.

    T.... ....

Carolyn Willis, Shelly Clark, and Edna Wright.

  65. k.... ....

My first time hearing this song; it's a jewel, thanks for posting it.
