THIS is why I love Acapella

I just heard this song today for the first time. I went through a dozen versions on youtube that sounded too pretty or pop. This guys voice is my favourite so far. If he drinks a couple shots of whiskey and has a pack a smokes before he sings he’d totally nail it and I can close my eyes and believe he’s had a hard life and is ready for the promised land.

Peter Hollens This is the first time I discovered you Peter! I was in the eighth grade practicing for this very song for solo festival. It inspired my love for a Capella and audition choir, which I went on to be involved in throughout the rest of middle and high school. Life changing piece right here.

This song is such a mix of emotions for me. The last thing I did with my girlfriend before she broke up with me out of the blue was show her this video, and that horrible night is in the back of my mind when I watch this video. The song is so sad too, it's basically slaves singing about how the only hope they have for happiness is in death. However, this is the most beautiful a capella song I've ever heard so it brings me happiness too.

This is the first time time I've heard "world of woe". The other times have all been "this world alone". Are there different versions or do people just hear it differently and then write it differently and then sing it differently?

I sang it in a choir class a few years ago and had "world of woe." I've never heard it "world alone" before! That's funny

We always sang world of woe growing up in church back in the 60s. I've never heard anyone sing world alone, but I think it fits fine too.
