Holiday, Billie - Violets For Your Furs Lyrics

It was winter in Manhattan
Falling snowflakes filled the air
The streets were covered with a film of ice
But a little simple magic that I'd heard about somewhere
Changed the weather all around, just within a trice

You bought me violets for my furs
And it was spring for a while, remember?
You bought me violets for my furs
And there was april in that december
The snow drifted on the flowers and melted where it lay
The snow looked like dew on the blossoms
As on a summer day

You bought me violets for my furs
And there was blue in the wintry sky
You pinned the violets to my furs
And gave a lift to the crowds passing by
You smiled at me so sweetly
Since then one thought occurs
That we fell in love completely
The day you bought me violets for my furs

  1. M.... E....

It is said Billie Holiday was quite intimidated of the band arrangement Mr Ray Ellis assembled for her to record the Lady in Satin album. But he helped coached her through the recording of this album and was blown away once the album was complete . He said it was a masterpiece and Ms Holiday would live only 17 months after the completion of the album . It is a beautiful recording project that she left behind . 👍👍👍👍

One of the most evocative, romantic songs I can imagine. Arranged beautifully and, of course, Billie Holiday in her maturity as its centerpiece. Astonishingly nuanced, sophisticated, sad and lovely. R.I.P.

  7. D.... S....

Don't forget Ray Ellis/Claus Orgerman.. conductor alnd arranger. They and Lady make this album a masterpiece.
