Holiday, Billie - Billie's Blues Lyrics

Lord I love my man, tell the world I do
I love my man, tell the world I do
But when he mistreats me
Makes me feel so blue

My man wouldn't give me no breakfast
Wouldn't give me no dinner
Fought about my supper and put me outdoors
Had the dark clay make black spots on my clothes
I didn't have so many
But I had a long, long way to go

Some men like me talkin' happy
Some calls it snappy
Some call me honey
Others think I got money
Some tell me baby you're built for speed
Now if you put that all together
Makes me everthing a good man needs

"Had the dark clay make black spots on my clothes"?? Where on earth did that come from? It's "had the nerve to lay a matchbox on my clothes" --- an old line in a number of blues, also in a Beatles song, Matchbox -- they get it wrong too. The Beatles sing "matchbox holdin' my clothes." Which is ridiculous. How can a matchbox hold your clothes?

    F.... G....

Do you have anymore suggestions. Will be more than glad to hear. My dad and I are looking for more golden oldies to jam to.

  13. h.... ....

Benny Goodman star soloist on this set. Not quite the king of swing yet. But just wait.

    h.... ....

I think this is the July 1936 recording with Artie Shaw on clarinet

    h.... ....

I was listening to Bessie Smith just the other day and realized that i was also hearing a young Louis Armstrong.... AWESOME

This is the real music! Not the poor music what you hear nowadays..... This is atleast with guitars and saxophones! Today only some technical poop program

    T.... ....

there's no sax in this...its a vocal piece with guitar, trumpet, clarinet, string bass, and drums...

    @Savannah Kistler 😎

  15. c.... ....

That's true, but since no one here is disputing it, what is the point of writing it?

    c.... ....

Gotta keep reminding ourselves and the world. Music is the way out of Hell!!

  16. S.... V....

This IS the blues. This was recorded in 1936. Without artists like Billie Holiday there woudnt even be a led zeppelin

    S.... V....

Billie is a Jazz singer! Okay this has a bluesy touch.

Corrections according to what I heard in the lyrics:
    “Wouldn’t give me no dinner
Squawk about supper and put me outdoors,
Had the nerve to lay a matchbox on my clothes
    ...
Some men like me ‘cause I’m happy
    Some ‘cause I’m snappy...”

    Peace.

    Love It.
