When I teach younger singers who are being introduced to Jazz and American popular standards, I try to steer them away from Billie Holiday at first for this simple reason: you will never correctly learn any popular song by listening to her! Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald sang with just as much emotion. But the two of them had more respect for Melody.
