Higgins, Missy - Oh Canada Lyrics
He was carried from the water by a soldier
And the picture screams a thousand different words
He was running from the terror with his father
Who once believed that nothing could be worse
The way you'd rest a bird in a lion's open jaw
And he told the boys that Canada was waiting
That there was hope upon her golden shores
But at night he said a quiet prayer into the wind
Oh Canada, if you can hear me now
Won't you open up your arms towards the sea?
Oh Canada, if you could help me out
All I ever wanted was a safe place for my family
Well the days were long but the nights were even longer
And the baby boys never left their mothers' side
But the boat was small and the waves were getting stronger
And they began to fear they'd not survive
Till the father said "We gotta hold each other tighter
I'm not losing everything I love tonight
And we've come so far I know that out there somewhere
There's a place we won't have to fear for our lives"
But as he held onto the side of the boat he looked up at the sky
Oh Canada, if you can hear me now
Won't you open up your arms towards the sea
Oh my Canada, if you could help me out
The sea is turning and I think we're going down
Ohhhh
Canada if you can hear me now,
Won't you open up your heart towards the sea
Ohhhh
Anyone, please help me out
All I ever wanted was a safe place for my family
There's a million ways to justify your fear
There's a million ways to measure out your worth
But the body of Alan being laid upon the sand
Tell me how do we live with that?

Higgins, Missy Oh Canada Comments
No matter what, this song will always be in my heart ❤️💓
I am Canadian, and saw this in school. I love the song, and I'm really glad that Canada takes in refugees :)
We were doing these small prayer liturgies in class as an assessment and each group had to pick a topic and 2 groups did refugees and they played this music video and I was on the brink of crying.
In syria all that happend to us cause of islam FUCK this religion i hate it so much
My school choir sung this for Remembrance day because of the theme of loss and I got chills
I feel heartbroken
I understand this song is sad and stuff and I understand it’s a true story about the boy and I’ve seen the news report but you guys are so fucking naive expecting the world to just be nice, that’s not how the world works there are systems in place and you have to follow them and if everyone was nice and stuff we would probably be living off communism and that had never worked in the past
I had to watch this in class and I'm very sensitive but I didn't cry, but one of the boys in my class was crying
Rest In Peace to another refugees who have died and safe travels to ones still alive.
I saw this when it was social studies
It’s really sad to think about how many times this world encounters injustice and to think injustice has been going on for literally thousands of years. It’s so sad to think that injustice will never leave. This world, us people have to do something BIG in order to see Real CHANGE. If we want to see betterment in people’s lives we have to and I mean HAVE TO CHANGE GRANDLY. Either wise nothing will really matter. Little things sure they help but in order for there to be concrete change... there needs to be a huge step forward. One very giant step. These are lives that we are talking about here. Human beings lives. We need to look out for each other. We need to look out for ourselves. Please treat people fairly. Please venture out into the world as best as you can. Please don’t keep behind a screen and scroll through pointless things that will get you nowhere in life. Please just educate yourself. Please just be aware of things like this in the world. Because being blind to tragedies like this is probably the most terrible thing to ever endure as a human being. Open your eyes. And just please do something. Anything. Not just for your satisfaction as a human being... for the mere betterment of the world. Bc like I said before small things help for sure. But the more of us that come to realizing how much action we need to take... maybe one day there will be a concrete change. Hopefully it’s not violent or anything bc that just makes matters worse (at least in my opinion and of course no disrespect to the soldiers who fought in wars and the people who risked their lives or lost their lives in violence and violent situations) but I just hope for a long stretch of evolution in this world that actually gets us somewhere. Idk... “I’d love it if we made it.”
We watched this in Well-being when we were looking at bravery... the boys in my class started laughing at it and I needed so much restraint not to snap at them..
I. Cry. Every. Damn. Time.
Left Wing tree hugger Missy Higgins should let a paki islamic family live with her !!!
If you're so passionate Missy let's see that !!
My teacher showed this to me and I was so upset I don’t know why I’m watching this again!
It’s so lovely so heart warming.😔😢
This is so sad
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
This song gets me even more now, because I've become a father. What you need is the best for your family. Your children.
Why do I do this to myself....I watch this knowing it's going to rip my heart out
To me, this speaks mass amounts about our world leaders and representatives.
I cried so much watching this, and wondering, why? why did they have to loose their family in such a tragic way, and why do people have to be so cruel and mean? why do people have to make other fear for their lives? its not right and its not ok, and when people try to hurt others they are hurting themselves even more! because if I have 3 wishes, this is what i would do with them,
1. I would wish for work peace, meaning there was no money, no mean cruel people and no violence.
2. I would wish for that little boy, to be given a second chance in life, him and his family so that they could live a happy SAFE life.
3. And finally, I would wish for countries to unite as one! so if people don't feel safe in their own country, other countries would say, hey! dont worry! come to our country and we will care for you.
I love you little boy and your family! I know that you're watching down on other refugees that may have been in your position and you are guiding them, making sure that there ok, making sure, that they live a safe, happy life, as you once did. 💕💕💕💕💕💖💖💖💖💖
I cried so much when will this war end??
Romeo dalliare = RTP = 5 eyes to step up and save the world
I think as someone who is able to sit in my lounge, with warmth, internet and food, I believe that anyone in any way they see fit should highlight the absolute devastation refugees feel and go through. With wars and climate change, we will only see more refugees seeking peace, safety and stability wherever they can.
Learnt about this in a Social Injustice elective the other week. Really blew my mind tbh
i watched this at school im in grade 6 learning about refugees and we got this showen to us in social studys i wanted to cry because it was really sad and emotinal song so i decided to come home and watch it i feel very blessed to not live in a war torn country like syria <3 i want to be able to maybe sing this song and learn more about it ....
Isnt this girl Australian? Australia a country that puts migrants on an isolated island. We have no lessons to receive from you. Why didnt Australia take them? Canadians are morally superior to any people on this planet. We have no lessons to receive from anyone especially from countries like Australia and USA
take no lessons from anyone ... but you are NOT superior ....
I peformed a lyrical dance to this song and after i had finished my friend broke out into tears cause her dad was a soldier
This is amazing who would of thought and aussie would have done this

Rip Liam and his family😢😢😢😢😢
Powerful
I got showed this song in class today, and its beautiful ❤️
This is sooo sad 😭
They made me watch this at my school. I already know about the Syrian war😭 I was crying when this came on
This is all wrong, they were safe in Turkey and had been for two years before they decided to leave and cheat their way into Europe..
When the two hands come apart... phew.
Hard not to think of my own 4 year old daughter.
I sometimes envy bastards and psychopaths... they will never know the anguish that is the price of empathy.
Where are the lyrics about Kurdi's father trying to get new teeth?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TiXyVUTlDE
The video made me cry especially seen as though it was from actual refugees my heart sank as i relized how selfish humanity is we say we have strong human rights records but if you look at places like Australia, where i live the government have Islamophobia and wont let them in they go through all of this just to die or get told they cant pass through. Its a great message and we need more people like you missy!
JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S ANTHEM.
DISCLAIMER: I do hold great respect for these refugees myself.
So In 2016 my year 6 class did this for drama and it made me and my friend kailee ball our eyes out. Weber since I love this song it’s so powerful. Very well done missy very well done❤️👏🏻
I just love love missy What a beautiful and sad song
Pure Capitalism as we are heading has no heart. Just profit margins and quarterly reports
This is such a sad yet beautiful song
This is such a beautiful and profoundly sad song. So difficult to listen to but I really could not stop listening! The desperate plight of all those escaping violence is almost too much to bear. Canada is truly a haven— was for my grand parents, and still is. Missy Higgins, you conveyed that and much more in this song. Thank you!
Heard this on CBC radio driving home, almost had to pull over, it was so beautiful. I'm proud of what Canada has done so far, I just wish we could do more.
My chorus sang this. So sad but so powerful.
Who's here for homework?
I’m gay
i'm curious, what kind of homework was it?
Joey Mamuza yuppp for a drama assessment
I have to do a project for school based on this and I have no idea. how to explain this story
We're going to be singing this in my vocal ensemble and I don't know if I can handle it. This is the second time I've listened to the song and I've broken down in tears both times... It's so beautiful and heart-wrenching, this is what happens when violence is taken to innocent lives; it's too cruel, too painful to even imagine all the poor souls that have lost a battle they didn't even want to fight in, all the families that have been broken and scattered from the monster of war
thankyou you mh for this heartbreaking song. May we always remember Alan's life. Our darkening world needs your music. don't ever stop writing.
Wow! Missy such thought provoking words! What a beautiful song! Thank you.
I think this song is so amazing! No person or child should have to experience this.
Alan KURDİ :_(
literally gets me all teared up
I'm kurdish and I can totally relate to it. I've tried escaping, you see hell, period.
this still makes me cry
Is sad 😢😢😢😢😢

Wow this song is so sad people should allow more people in and not just children in every one should be aloud in😭😭😭😭😭😭
O humanity that could be your child. speechless!
I'm performing this song with the Boston Children's Chorus tomorrow for our Martin Luther King concert, and this is one of the most chilling songs we have.
Amazing vids my friend!
Actually you delusional snowflakes are clueless. Australian jets drop bombs in Syria. And it has nothing to do with us. Syria was not a threat to Australia. Superiority is not an American or Australian birth right. It's actually something you have to fight for and maintain. Don't be a society of people hearing without listening, people looking without seeing, and others talk without speaking. I will never believe that Saddam Hussein was an immediate threat to Greece or Europe and Asia or Australia and Britain or America. I agree, Saddam Hussein's crimes against humanity should have been punished in a court. But only along with Bush and Blair and Howard, who waged war without Iraq's WMD evidence.
As an Australian, I agree that some of our laws are truly terrible and in many cases result in the deaths and torment of many innocents wishing to seek refuge in an acclaimed beautiful country, I just hope you're not generalising Australian's views to that of its government.
This is beautiful. The imagery is heartbreaking and when I first saw it I cried
I'm my class we learned about Alan Kurdi
Pyper. Wald7 your a fucking idiot you need to give some credit to missy
ANYONE KNOW THE CHORDS FOR PIANO?????
My boyfriend was looking for the canada national anthem and he randomly found this song on his phone and he was like "can we take a second to realize this song is fucking good and i had no idea I had it" I've been listening to it ever since so he was right
Also he mentioned how it was super too real to what's happening now in america.
Oh, my eyes are raining...
This is trash.
astute.
This made me cry.
Ohhh canada
Missy, you are beautiful and your music is beautiful. You have captured this issue so wonderfully, with grace and sensitivity.
This is one of my favourite
