Hiatt, John - Walk On Lyrics
Someone called out to you
And it sounded just like crying
On a street where nobody
Even knows your name
Your mind was getting high on the sweet air
Steam rising from the sidewalks
Of New Orleans after an evening rain
Steam rising from the sidewalks
After an evening rain
And it only made the heat
Feel like it was walking even closer
As you headed up St. Charles
To catch a streetcar named Desire
Like he was trying to force her
In the distance you swore
You could hear them open fire
Tires squealing in the distance
As you heard them open fire
[Chorus:]
Walk on, walk on
Don't look back
Don't ask questions
Don't you try to understand
Walk on, walk on
Straight back down to your hotel room
Where she lies waiting for her man
You're so afraid you might be losing love
That is makes you worry
And you wonder if she's ever seen this
Kind of fear in you
And you think of that young couple
In the doorway
And it makes you hurry
You wonder what kind of fear
They might be living through
Yeah you wonder if
They saw that fear in you
[Chorus]

This dude is badass
If you count your life in broken hearts, triumphs, loves and losses ...... John Hiatt wrote your soundtrack - whether you know it or not. And the more of us who know him thru his heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics are closer to God because of it.
Spread the Gospel of Hiatt everywhere.
Great sound, great song
Hiatt is criminally overlooked. More people deserve to hear his work. It's a shame that he's unknown to so many.
This is soul music
John Hiatt poet, wordsmith and genius in the class of Oscar Wilde, Dylan Thomas and William Wordsworth.

John Hiatt is the Dean Koontz of music. He is a wordsmith, an writer, and Musician. His songs have a depth to them, as deep as the Mariana Trench. I have seen him twice in Bellingham Wash, and both times he was remarkable. Thank you
👍 song ✍ and 👍 🎸 player and 👍 blues voice
He uses the same chords a lot, but by christ every song is special. For those who don't know him, listen to the words.
Going to see John and Lyle Lovett tonight, probably for the 6th-7th time for each of them. Both superb songwriters, musicians and showmen !!!
Hauntingly beautiful
John Hiatt paints pictures with words.
♡♡♡
Here in Europe they almost never play Master Hiatt on the radio... too bad ! He's sooo good !
Gone are the days of real music, made by real people who felt their music and conveyed it to us with such emotion and genuineness. Rock/Walk on John. We met at Summerfest and I was in awe of your down to earth realness.
How could 47 folks not like this?!!!!
all the thumbs you don't know good music!!
all the thumbs you don't know good music!!
The Tele just sings it's way into that feedback... simply lovely.
Well if my mom was up she would tell you all what this is about.... but you know... she really shouldn't have to tell you about it because it should be understood!! Wow you guys are burning the midnight oil a little bit into the morning!!
walk on... walk on...
I remember buying this album, getting as far as this song, only the 3rd track, and realising I was listening to a classic. Still his best album for me, and that's a seriously high bar.
This is probably my favorite John Hiatt album! This is what I was listening to when I fell hopelessly in love with the wonderful man who was to become my husband. It will always be special to both of us!
Love this song...drummer kicks ass...really drives it.
I love this song, especially every time I look over my shoulder, the sun is low and red: it's sunset. And just as the sun also the thoughts chase the memories, whether it is a tear a smile, a wrong or something that will never leave us: walk on...
Thank you John for the Blues 💙
Im an Aussie & i've loved his music for last 25 yrs 💖💖💖💖
A talented, talented man!
John sings our hearts , he feels it plays it and feels it !
What is this song about, exactly? Losing one's innocence, and having the courage to face your fears in a world that can be very ugly? Or maybe just going on a long walk and sorting out that day's mess?
TheHungaryJack I've been looking for the official meaning behind this song as well!
guess it don't matter what it's about! just a great tune by a great artist! walk on John!
John Hiatt is a wonderful musician and lyricist....he is one of my favorites along with Jackson Browne.
Great band
This song beats my ass I keep crying uncle and it just won't stop ...
On most streets, nobody knows my name.
great song
One of my favorite Neil Young songs has the same title ... this one's just as special.
We speak the same language. I love this man.
Townes Van Zandt has a song, "Kathleen", that Hiatt should put his touch on as it is him - borderline melancholy crazy with the majesty of a Lippazane.
ever1 that has covered his tunes has won agrammy, great artist
I love john HIATTS music he is a true musician in every sense of the word
love your style
you got that right saintsfan!
Hiatt, like David Lindley, is more respected by fellow musicians and the music industry than we could ever know as fans.
Love the guy and his music. His shows are great, he is under appreciated by the mass media and that is okay. To those in the know we can look at each other and smile.
S M I L E !

"Walk on" is one of my favorite @John Hiatt albums. Love the title track.
Walk on, walk on
Don't look back
Don't ask questions
Don't you try to understand
what do u all think the meaning of this is?
A picture, an impression of New Orleans' streets, someone's and feelings revealed through John Hiatt's eyes, a relationship between a man and a woman.
Haven't been back to NOLA since way before Katrina but it is a magical place.
This is probably my favorite album of his. Every song is different, never get tired of hearing it...
no words to describe this wonderful melody correctly: beyond heaven. One of the genius of music
Valentina Sacco ""
i saw John Hiatt on his 1995 walk on tour at the Moore theater in Seattle . He came back 3 times for a twelve song encore The man played his ass off . I have never felt like i had gotten way more than my moneys worth there was total and complete musical fulfillment .. and i had a smile on my face many days after. Mr Hiatt is a true american treasure and a musical genius
I had a similar experience at one of his local concerts.
I'm told he never plays a set list, so the shows are fresh. He played, he danced and he sang It was a whole show, great entertainment, worth every penny. Hope to see him again this summer *fingers crossed*
I have seen him 3 nights in a row and the performances were always fresh and unique!
Richard S , I live in a country in Europeus só its hard to check it out.
I discover John Hiatt with Bring The Family
Also attracted by Ry Colder, Nick and the Bruce S. drummer.
What a great record
But I believe in you, he seems a genuine artist, not a YT star
Just Beautiful...
I love this song....What an inspiration!!

you are so lucky,I got cut off from my Son and i am dead inside because of it
+william reeves--------WE are ALL doing the very best WE can in the moment. Forgive yourself, forgive your son, forgive everyone for everything. Then see what happens, it will not take long.
I will never ever ever ever buy five hour energy

I love his music and lyrics-Can't remember how I discovered him, but he is one of the best!
I enjoyed reading your comments about John Hiatt. I completely concur with your commentary. He's brilliant!
Great voice, real words
My grandmother gave me this cd (tape) when i was young and I listened to it over and over. John Hiatt is amazing, a true musician. I wish there were more real songwriters out there these days. This never gets old. There should be more likes.

Wow...just.wow!
Just What I need to hear in this time of my life! Wonderful song just Great!!!
finally!
Old friend of mine, on his way to moving to Ketchikan Alaska, dropped in to see me in Des Moine IA, (having just left Austin, TX, '87, I think), gave me a tape that had Stolen Moments on one side an S. Earle, Copperhead Row on the other. hook was set, sold me on the genius.
One of my favorite JH songs. Great album, too !
Inacreditável JOHN HIATT!!!
he is the man!!!!!!
one of the best of his generation ,alot of young artists today could benefit by listening to a cross section of his catalogue
PLEASE! Someone upload Ethylene!!!!
Zero dislikes. A section of youtube that isn't artistically retarded.
My dad always played this album when I was younger...I never appreciated it until now. Beautiful song.
Been in love with him since I heard his voice - when I was too young to be in love...
Great lyrics. It's like a country noir
This is the best artist ever. Because he is one. He wants to make music and make people happy with it, well.. Good Job John, you did it! He keeps it small, because that what makes it good and big.. He and he's guitar..
This album is sublime.
only times i got to see my dad was weekends everytime he was driving me home we would have this guys album on i didnt really like it at the time but today it reminds me of being a lil kid with no worries or stress really great music thanks uploader.
@BirdArvid INDEED
One of the best songs by one of the greatest, but sadly, most underrated artists of all time. The whole album is wonderful..
Love this song, glad someone finally posted it
i remember listening to this cd
then again
and again
and it seemed every song on it was getting stronger
than the song before
which i realized was impossible b/c 'cry love'
is truly a masterpiece performance
but this 'walk on' floors me
this whole disc bowls me over
hiatt's in a songwriting class by himself
wonder if it gets lonely in that room?
the guy just makes it seem easy
which anybody knows it aint
thnx for the tube
all-time fave <3
Agreed, one of my all-time favorite artists and albums.
