Herman's Hermits - The Man With The Cigar Lyrics

The man with the cigar walked on up to where I was workin' this mornin'
The man with the cigar said that I was workin' too slow
& if I didn't speed it up, he'd have to let me go

I'm workin' like a dog, so why's he always hangin' around me to hound me?
He's pushing me too far, & pretty soon my back is gonna break
I've taken all that I can take from the man with the cigar

I need this job & I need it bad
That's why I gotta keep myself from gettin' mad
The man with the cigar, I hope he doesn't push me too far
Yeah the man with the cigar
Yeah the man with the cigar
Yeah the man with the cigar

I need this job & I need it bad
That's why I gotta keep myself from gettin' mad
The man with the cigar, I hope he doesn't push me too far
Yeah the man with the cigar
Yeah the man with the cigar
Yeah the man with the cigar

Dear 74sodapop: Yep, this is definitely a very good piece of music! It should have been a BIG HIT! I discovered this decades ago on the B side of ? Great fidelity and the slow fade are a Plus! Thanx 4 posting this with Great Pictures, Pal!

  3. Victor Velazquez

In Dec. 1967, I was 9yrs. old, riding downhill with two buddies in a Radio Flyer wagon, and I was listening to my brand new transistor AM radio, this song was playing, broke it, my Dad chewed me out because my grandmother just gave iy to me as a birthday present just a couple of hours earlier. Ahhhhhhh .... pleasant memories of a great childhood(in the 1960's, with Fizzie tablets, the Banana Splits on Sat. mornings and the moonshine ... Opps! I mean moonshots.)

Great song, it reminds me of my boss who use to smoke cigars, who worked me hard
    Best band of the 60’s

Been playing the album this track comes from - not a bad track on it and this one's the best.

  9. Jolly Sincere

Love this song over their well known hits as 'I'm Into Something Good' or anything else. This is really godlike, maybe 2nd or 3rd best their song

    WakinTheDeadFan

It's got nothing to do with God.

First time I hear this one; I'm a 70's child but this is my favourite music, thanks!!

  12. Robert Brounstein

Man, That was Herman's Hermits!? I recognize Peter Noonan's voice, but this song is quite different from "Henry VIII!" Nice

    Profesora Nut

I don't think that's Peter singing! Such a deep voice at the beginning.

    aabacchi

    Of course is he!

    Profesora Nut

@aabacchi Well if you say so. I think you're right.

  13. Jackson Hickman

    Raymond Sullivan

The 'B' side to their great hit 'A Must to Avoid'. A great 2 sided hit.

  15. crowleysridgegirl

LOL I heard this for perhaps the first time yesterday on SIRUS 60,and I thought I knew most songs from that era,I nearly died laughing

    WakinTheDeadFan

    What's SIRUS60?

  16. CARLOS A. SANCHEZ

Social protest by the cuddly HH, who knew? Nice pics but get a photo of a real cigar chompin' nasty boss, not a nice old cigar maker from Ybor City.

    WakinTheDeadFan

    Yeah, I'm thinking a gangster.

  17. dennisdurocher

We're out there. Those of us 'with', and those of us 'without'. The cigar has always been optional. Boogie on now!

    WakinTheDeadFan

I'm not sure what you mean, explain yourself.

  18. Thetrackrecords

Great, real originality in the lyrics.

    WakinTheDeadFan

Have you never heard of a song about a cigar before?

  19. Lorraine Dalu

A classic original tune by a first class British Invasion band.

  20. Der Glaetze

    This song is absolutely hysterical.

    WakinTheDeadFan

It's not meant to be funny.

  21. Wilthomer

My aunt gave me her "Must To Avoid" 45 (along with loads of other Hermits 45's and their "I'm Into Something Good" LP) in 1977 or 1978 and it wasn't until a few years back that I was blown away by this tune. Has it been comped on any Hermits CD's?

  22. J. Slick

    always like this tune

  23. Léonard Michalon

    Victor Velazquez

    Merci beaucoup copain!

  24. brnleague99

Herman's Hermits are awesome. They could have been another Beatles if things had gone right in the universe.

    aabacchi

    Less, please, less.

  25. 3rdStoneObliterum

I remember this tune when I was 6 years old listening on an old phonograph to the '45. I loved the harmonies and still do. Wow, they really used 2 write real songs at one time, musicians, huh? As opposed to the hip hop crap of the last 20 years.

  26. gymnastix

I like their hits, but I can think of several album cuts, such as "Don't Try To Hurt Me" and "I Wonder Why," also "Rattler" and "Gaslight Street" that are equally as good, so you certainly have something there with your analysis.

One thing's for sure, the group was more than just a lightweight, bubblegum (not that there's anything wrong with bubblegum--"Sugar, Sugar" and "Indian Giver" are two favorites of mine) act. They had talent and they did play on most of their sessions, contrary to myth.

  27. Viznel137

I can relate!I knew PLENTY of cigar smokers!!!!!Classic song

  28. bt2tags

2008 and it's never been more relevant. Just more men and more cigars.

  29. Belino Kanisowsky

    i like it

  30. Blake Taylor

    very nice!
