Helm, Levon - The Weight Lyrics

I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.

[Chorus:]
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.

I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."

[Chorus]

Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"

[Chorus]

Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rack, if you'll take Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can."

[Chorus]

Catch a cannon ball now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.

[Chorus]

Helm, Levon The Weight Comments
  1. S.... ....

    I'm troubled, a good friend once told me that he didn't like Levon Helm's voice it bugged him somehow he also told me another time that he didn't like Garth Hudson's playing , I love both of their style of playing passionately. What's next does he secretly love the Monkees or does he hate the Beatles ? Man I'm so troubled.

  10. J.... M....

    Just heavenly!
    God bless Levon- there was such beauty in his beautiful southern voice.
    It’s always sad to see people getting older. I’m remembering the boys from The Last Waltz in 1978.
    They started, “The Band”, between 1963-1969, in Toronto with Ronnie Hawkins + started out touring with Bob Dylan.
    Their 1st live appearance, after touring with Dylan, was at Stone Brook University in the spring of 1969. Later that year they performed with Dylan in the U.K- Isle Of Wight Festival.
    I always loved Levon Helm + his overall laid back personality.
    He had an amazing career.

  11. K.... L....

    This band had incredible harmony, and the song help me survive my childhood.

  12. l.... o....

    One of the greatest singing drummers of all time.

  13. M.... T....

    Funny how Levon hated Robbie but kept singing his songs

    M.... T....

    They weren’t Ronnie’s songs they were the Band’s songs. That was the cause of the resentment that the others especially Levon felt Robbie took all the credit.

    This the best of Levon,great sound,wasnt long before he died.I look at the age in his face and I see myself.

    m.... W....

    No offense, but this is several years before he died. He lost part of his voice in the mid-90s before the final Band album was released, and this is several years before that. His voice here is strong and wonderful.

    m.... W....

    Obi-One Kanoli thank you for that
