Helm, Levon - Take Me To The River Lyrics
I don't know why I love you like I do
After all them changes that you put me through
You stole my money and my cigarettes
And I ain't seen hide nor hair of you yet
Just tell me how, how could I stay here with you
Will you take me to the river and wash me down
Just take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground
I don't know why you treated me so bad
After all them good times that we could have had
Love is a notion that I can't forget
My sweet sixteen I will never regret
I wanna know, won't you tell me
You gotta take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Take me to the river and put my feet back on the ground
Love me, squeeze me, hold me and you can tease me
Until I can't take no more, no more, no more, no more
I just don't know why I love you like I do
After all them changes that you put me through
Your sixteen candles they burn on my wall
Now who's the biggest fool of us all
I wanna know, won't you tell me
Just tell me how, how could I stay here with you
Will you take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Just take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground
Will you take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Will you take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground

I love levon healm . He just feels it you know? And anyone really listening feels it in return. I can truly say that they dont make them like that anymore !!!!! Music will truly miss him....

BEST VERSION of this tune ever!
Drywall Contractor, Ballston Spa, NY
what a good job missing levon
Still loving Levon.
I always got the warmest vibe from Levon! I always wished I could have been at one of those "rambles', with my lap steel, or Dobro......a tambo.....cassenettes'', or sax....He had musicality....some got it, some don't.. If you know you have it, it is a gift from GOD...! Use it and be gratefull!!! Hi Amy and Larry....AFA Eldred Scott Joyner N.H.
Love for LEVON
Just wow! God bless you Levon.
Good Lord, this was cut at Muscles Shoals and had half the Blues Brothers band and that badass house band that headquartered there, the MS Rhythm section.
read "This Wheels on Fire"..nuff said ya'll
On Levon how you could take others songs and make them your own So Miss the Music truly your passing brought a lose to music that may never be replaced
...BIG MAHALO'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who Knew? I love it.
Where can I find that version in digital audio? What album is it on?
If you will scroll up you'll see what album it's on.
His style can't be emulated again. He is one of a kind. Thankful he leaves us with a part of himself.
in my heart.
Maybe the best drummer - singer ever !
Not even maybe....the very best of all time...plus ,. Whatta...singer.
Did I forget to mention he was an actor also,????? He starred.in coal miners daughter.
He would have kicked Phil Collins' ass with his left foot and Don Henley's with his right.
Maybe? No he was anand is in my book the greatest
Really nice cover. Loved it.
Soulfulllll !
You know I like it. I really do. Great version of this song. Thanks for sharing.
The man brought the soul to this song, yet, the horn section cloaked it all in gold
lol happy happy
You see Robbie, this is how to make music, even if it may be a cover, with the kind of voice and delivery that you never had. And you had to go and ruin a good thing just when it had reached it's height of exposure and full potential by breaking up The Band. Screw you. R.I.P. Levon and may god bless you for all the good that you brought your audience of listeners for over 50 years.
+blatrug Usually I just make my comment and move on, ignoring what others might say but WOW, you were right on top of my comment, what, over 3 years later? Just F.Y.I., on YouTube if someone says something you disagree with, you call them on it within a couple months of their comment otherwise it makes you look pretty simple minded not being up with things. I mean 3+ years later? I'm honored as that's something of a record here. Lol!
Please forgive me if I offended you. I apologize without reservation.
Spot on Au6..........Robbie didn't know what music is.........he was Piggybacking on Levon,Danko,Garth and Manuel.
I'm on Levon's side....blood! I did like Robbies levy exploits...take me yo da river
Not so much to diss Robertson, but the mike he pretended to sing into at the WALTZ was dead.
what a great cover!
Great song and sadly missed talent
love this song
Al Green also..
Had this poster light years ago.....
Great musician and human being , missed very much .
Stop making sense, By God. Yeah!

time to find a new favorite. this version blows the heads away. im sorry. Levon Helm? no contest
same boat man! they both have such different feels to them and they are both just amazing!
Talking Heads is the version I always sailed by, but I may have to switch sails...I just can;t decide. Problems, problems....
So good, I've been listening to Levon do this for decades
Great voice. I saw him in concert twice and I'm glad.
I had only ever heard the Foghat version but this one is great too.
No - Levon's version and the TH version both came out in 1978.. I think Levon's beat there's by a couple months.
And the TH version came out around the same time as Leon's... so not even an influence. They were both taking on a song that was already a hit by Green.
Al Green and Mabon Hodges wrote this song. The Talking Heads made a cover...
He was actually born in Elaine, AR but did live in the unincorporated area of Turkeyscratch, then he went on to graduate from Marvell high school, all of these are right near West Helena, AR....I am a big Levon Helm fan and grew up just about 2 hours straight north from where he grew up. Peace
This man was for real! I love everything he puts his voice to. Such a talent.
Another true music icon gone. RIP Levon, keep on rockin' it up in that big concert hall in Heaven. Love the horn arrangement and that soulful feel that Levon put into this song.
so good, i listened to it twice
thanks for all your food music levon. rip
awesome man
A great musician from turkeyscratch, Ark !
RIP, Lev!
Talking Heads did a good job with this song, however, the warmth and soul Levon puts into itis missing. RIP
Coz Levon Had soul!!!!
Yeah but the world has won a great opportunity to learn what a great man he was. It goes both ways, and Levon would agree, I'm sure.
What a voice! And he was drumming at the same time!
Take me to the river!
Levon Helm was a true talent... He will be missed. Thanks for posting.
I agree - and get what you're saying exactly. This is simply great - complements, but neither exceeds nor subtracts from Reverend Green's original. (In that way, it reminds me of Creedence's classic remake of 'Heard it thru' the Grapevine..)
The album is just called "Levon Helm." I think it came out around 82. Pretty sure the Talking Heads had already covered it by then but Levon's version is closer to the original. And credible, against the odds. (Nobody does Al Green like Al Green, full stop). Levon would do a cover just to say thanks for doing something inspiring. Just how he was. He gets the deadpan humor and the groove and ... this is really quite good. He also does a pretty cool version of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me."
Another great one...R.I.P.
R.I.P. Levon...
He is playing with the angels now.
oh LEVON
RIP To one of the best in all facets of life
WOW Levon Helm (RIP) on drums . Nice ..
amazing musician, beautiful human being. will miss you, Levon. :(
Levon Helm was always a class act!
This is how I'll remember Levon. Lay his blessed body down and let him join the rest of the band in the sky.
Leon Russell.
leon russell
Reminds me of Leon
great memories of those nites on yonge street,at the friars, coc dor , the colonial , that was music
this is so dope
@xGRIZZLYMANx He's the last of the genuine badasses.
------------>SANCTIFIED.
YESSS!!
SWEETNESS <3
I thought no one could touch the Talking Heads. I was way damn wrong.
Both versions, and Al Green's original, are great. Which one I listen to just depends on my mood.
I LOVE LEON!! Great to hear this again. If you don't move when you hear this- feel for a pulse. Too late, you're dead!
I LOVE LEON!! Great to hear this again.
@mshereafter you must be nuts or deaf.
@HeartMonger I second that emotion, Heartmonger--Levon was definitely the anchor in this fabulously talented group.
No one knew the beat and the way of the music like Levon! He WAS "The Band" Though Rick, Garth, and the rest knew their S%#& as well. Levon was the soul. God Bless Levon!
Oh yeah. I can just hear this coming out of a famous bar on Bourbon Street.
