Heart - Without You Lyrics

Well I can't forget this evening
Though your face as you were leaving
But I guess thats just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes the
Sorrow show - yes it shows

And I can't forget tomorrow when I think
Of all your sorrow - when I had you there
And then let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
Yeah - gotta know

[Chorus:]
I can't live - if living is without you
I can't give - I can't give anymore
I can't live - if living is without you
I can't give - I can't give anymore

Well I can't forget this evening
Though your face as you were leaving
But I guess thats just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

[Chorus]

Ann Wilson obviously heard the song through Harry Nilsson's version. In the withdrawn first version of the album "Magazine" (released without the group's permission during a contract dispute), Ann closely immitated Harry Nilsson's harsh emphasis on the low notes during the chorus.. This was changed in the re-recorded vocal. In the 2nd version of the "Magazine" album, the ending of "You Shook Me" was edited, to remove Ann Wilson's note-for-note replication of Robery Plant's vocal improvisation from Led Zeppelin's version. All the selections from "Magazine" (excepting "Here Song" & "I've Got The Music In Me") were in various ways remixed, edited or partly re-recorded for the second version of the album. The original versions have never been released on CD. Only 5000 L.P.'s of the first version were pressed in the U.S.A. (on the "Mushroom" label) and a few thousand Dutch L.P.'s on the Arista label. The running order of the songs was different on the first version, and there was a statement on the rear of the album conceding that the record company was releasing the recordings without the group's permission.

There was a preliminary version of the "Magazine" album released in 1977 (only on LP) by the Mushroom label. There was a lot of trouble, legal issues & disputes that came out of that & copies of that early version of "Magazine" are very difficult to find.

    L.... C....

Yes, only 5000 copies of the first version were pressed in the U.S.A.(On the "Mushroom" label), and a few thousand more in Holland(on the Arista label). In the end, the courts ruled that the group owed Mushroom an album, but the group won the right to complete the album to their satisfaction, albeit with an armed guard standing by to ensure that the group and their producer didn't erase the multitrack tapes.

@56dinosaur I met Ann Wilson & Howard Leese years ago at a special appearance/signing. I asked Ann about it & she said that the label owed the band money.

  31. C.... H....

Those vibrato crescendo's are more pleasing to me than hearing a murcielago being taken from 0-redline

  32. G.... B....

None one can sing like Ann.

    G.... B....

I agree but Sandi Saraya is pretty damn close. She had a band "Saraya", check out "timeless love" from the shocker soundtrack.

    Badfinger.

Saw Heart as my first 'real' concert in Milwaukee 1977. Dreamboat Annie was just peaking, Magazine wasn't out yet. Anne came out solo for the encore, sat at a grand piano in just a spotlight, and belted this out. Needless to say, I was blown away.

    R.... E....

    Cool story bro.

    R.... E....

@mediacritic I am so envious. Love Heart, Dog & Butterfly, Barracuda, Magicman, Even it Up, et al. Now hearing this for the1st time at 52. Such a beautiful vetsion. This song was a masterpiece & difficult to cover. I love Nilsson's version, bc biased, only version I heard as a child. (Memories, can't change them). I also like Mariah's. Badfingers original song, I don't cotton to, but hey they wrote it, without them the song wouldn't exist. The song just ended. Gonna listen to it again without typing. It's right up there with Nilsson's. So many more covers to "review." Nice way to spend a Saturday waiting for the snow ! Heart, such awesome, talented rockers ! Wish they were still touring together....

    R.... E....

    @Ron Eichstaedt, Above, so envious......

    "Without You"

    'Heart'

Re-recorded in March 1978...... at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, Canada

From the 'Magazine' album ...... Released on April 22, 1978

This was an original song from 'Badfinger' in 1970.
Written by ....... Peter Chatman and Lewis Simkins of 'Badfinger.

A Power-Ballad, with an emphasis on a strong verse.

    Heart-I-Fact

'Heart' played this song at the closing of their sets in the early years at the small-clubs,
so the people had a closing-song to slow dance to.

Both, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson had seen 'Badfinger' in 1970, when they toured
in the Northwest, and played at 'The Aquarius Tavern'.in the north boundary area
    of Seattle.

'Heart' were a frequent band at 'The Aquarius Tavern' from 1973 thru 1976, before
    they made it big,

    'The Aquarius Tavern'
    17001 Aurora Avenue North
    Shoreline, Washington

A large dance hall, that could easily handle up to 1200 people.

    P.... C....

@Paul Ceasrine Ya Im from Vancouver, I remember them recording this and other songs in 1978.

    P.... C....

@Paul Ceasrine Thank you for this background info. Gotta love Heart . 💖

    P.... C....

    @Sam That's awesome !

  38. p.... p....

    I can't smile without you.

  39. J.... ....

my favorite version. Ann Wilson deserves more recognition.

    J.... ....

when Led Zeppelin recognizes you, who else do you need?

  40. 3.... ....

"Without You" is a song written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger, and first released on their 1970 album No Dice. The song has been recorded by over 180 artists and versions released as singles by Harry Nilsson (1971) and Mariah Carey (1994) became international best-sellers. Paul McCartney once described the ballad as "...the killer song of all time."

    3.... ....

There are a power ballad version, similar to this one. Do you know who played it? It was used in an add for Brutt Cologne

    3.... ....

Could have done without Pariah Scarey :(

    3.... ....

    I love Badfinger

  41. p.... ....

    Peter Hammill?

  42. w.... d....

Annie I can't live without you

  43. c.... ....

Pete Ham and Tommy Evans of Badfinger wrote this gem and it was included on their 1970 album "No Dice". Harry Nillson heard the song at a party - and thought it was the Beatles. When he realized it was not, he decided to cover the song and made a huge hit out of it. The song was originally two songs - the verse by Ham and the chorus by Evans....

  44. A.... ....

oh! I Know is from Harry Nilsson! hoho :)
I talk about Another Cover similar to this one from Heart, but a little more rocker! With male vocals. I've been looking for ir for years!!

  45. C.... F....

    song by nilsson
    hes the original

    C.... F....

No Idiot, he's not ..... Nilsson's hit was a cover.
It was written by Pete Ham & Tom Evans of Badfinger and was first released by Badfinger.

    C.... F....

you're both wrong, and you're both idiots! Mariah was the original writer and performer. Marty McFly heard it and went back in time and performed it at the enchantment under the sea dance, where it was heard by the future Badfinger band members. Get your facts checked before you post about things!!

    C.... F....

@Edward Wester Hahaha, nice to have a sense of humour among the confrontational back & forth comments . What a clever statement ! I BELIEVE you . Attaboy !

  46. A.... ....

    Badfinger sorry!

  47. A.... ....

Anyone knows ho sings a version of this song in hard rock with male vocals. And no, is not bad finger or Air Suply, is very similar to this one infact!

  48. G.... J....

Forever and Always I will cherish the dream we made together...my lil' coconut...and if you ever need me, I will always be here for you, for as long as I live...

  49. L.... T....

I just love this song. Nilsson did a great job with it, too.

  50. L.... D....

After 32 yrs now I know the meaning, loved it then love it now

  51. k.... h....

A BADFINGER SONG PENNED BY PETE HAM. COVRED BY HARRY!

  52. G.... M....

@Hunedog The band was born before Ann and Nancy, it was White Heart in Seattle, it was several other things until Roger, Steve, Michael, and Mike interviewed Ann then she fell for Mike. She begged Nancy to join, so she left college and joined and that's when the Nam draft was activated, and Mike was drafted, he ran to Canada and the rest followed after Ann. That was the latest word from Roger who is doing a documentary of their history that will come out soon! Watch for it!!!

    G.... M....

But after The Wilson sisters ended their personal relationships with Roger Fisher & (soundman) Michael Fisher, Roger Fisher left the group through an appalingly unprofessional act: Roger Fisher threw his guitar on the floor in the middle of a song, and he left the stage. And the band played on. "Heart" didn't miss a beat. A reunion of the early "Heart" will never happen. What Roger Fisher did was unforgivable, and why would the Wilson sisters want to work with their exes?

  53. P.... C....

This albim takes me back to driving to my first college interview in "78, after a album play on FM104 in Toledo waaaay back when radio stations did stuff like that. I recorded it, interview went well, no degree, but still one of the the most underated Heart releases. I'm sure the drama behind it has reason, but still I love it.

  54. S.... G....

@claretea Absolutelt the BEST!!!!!!!!! Couldnt agree anymore!!!!
