Pontiac SIlverdome - August 1978, opening for ELO, Heart closed their set with this.

Not one inch of this comes anywhere near the original. I was told to listen to this from a friend and I could not have been more disappointed in a cover. It obviously has it's fans, but wow, just not a great cover.

To Clark W. When it comes to Led Zeppelin the only band that can do an outstanding performance of their songs is Heart. And by that I mean Heart is the only band that does justice to their songs. But I agree with you nothing beats the original. Even Robert Plant named heart the "little led zeppelin".

They have almost always been known as The Little Led Zeppelin.....you should hear all of their LZ covers.....AMAZING! LOVE LOVE HEART!

You can think what you want of the studio version. But live, Zep only had one guitar, so their versions sound thin. Heart had two, and the difference shows in a much ballsier sound.

There's no accounting for taste. It escapes me how anyone who likes Zeppelin can deny that Heart playing Zeppelin is ALWAYS a win, but there it is.

THE greatest cover of "Rock and Roll." Period.
When you can hear the crowd over the band in full tilt, that's just electric.
To have been there live to feel that seismic surge in the stadium when the opening percussion signature exploded must have been just beyond belief.

I had the very good fortune to catch their show at the Montreal Forum in 1980, and until they launched into this song, I was unaware that it was a part of their repertoire. The double album with it on it was just coming out, but I didn't have a copy yet. So, it was a great and wonderful surprise, and man, oh man (Or would that be woman oh woman?) did they just nail it down hard.

This is a great Zep song, but I believe this is the greatest live version ever recorded, and way better than Zep's live performance.
Funny how some songs in the hands of other rockers are even better than the original.

Even my dad said that when he first heard this back when I used to have it on cassette.  He listened to it and went, "Hell, they did that better than Led Zeppelin." lol and he would know, he seen Zep in concert many times.

Among other things, Heart had two guitars live. Zep only one. It shows.

When I was young - I'd never even heard this song until this version....they it expanded my horizons and Rock and Roll became this beautiful, intertwined mutual admiration respect society.....then finally, it made all kinds of sense. LOVE THIS VERSION!!!
