Heap, Imogen - Neglected Space Lyrics

Hello
I watch you come and go
I know you can hear my voice
Don't walk away
Come daydream with me
In closed loops and future-proof cardboard to caviar.
Let’s show them how good we are.
If you look after me, I’ll look after you.

Sonar, night vision or desperate lovers
Seeking privacy for their forbidden…
I am their defenseless host.
Through my open wounds they let themselves in.
Sheltered (sheltered), they mock me (they mock me).

If you stand up for me, I’ll stand up for you.

I’m weather-beaten in a losing battle punctured by nature, becoming organic
The air in here ages me, ungracefully!
But if you take care of me, I’ll take care of you.

Oh, my crumbling heart!
If you’ll be good to me,
I’ll be good to you.

I’m amidst:
I could be the best decision you ever made, a beacon, your peaceful corner.
Find me, cherish me, take me on or pull me down. You choose.
Wait!

Oh, safe in the ache of soul-decay!
Cause I will remember you - will you remember me?

Bespoke to broken, this interwoven tapestry of tragedy,
Crooked frames and cracked glazing
Slithers of wistful window gazes glint in borrowed light.

Where doorways with no door stage a ballet of leaves,
Who pirouette in the footsteps of once glorious days...

By peeling paint, I’m a sunken ceiling,
I’m cracking up, and can seem threatening.

I’m falling apart.

I’m scary at night.
Take dark, forbidden: keep out, keep out! No, no, no go forth.

A has-been, a once was, the leftovers, an eyesore, bleeding, oxidising,
A few remaining, unloved, emotionally damaged, a waste of space,
A nuisance, I haven’t had time to become, unwanted!
What’s gone? I’m losing it
This is not what I stand for
This is not what I stand for
This is not what I stand for

It was a perfectly good grand piano.

Stop in the name of love! I’ve got just what you’re looking for!
I’ve got tree-lined interiors, where we can dine with the biosphere.

If you’ll take care of me, I’ll take care of you.
If you be good to me, then I’ll be good to you.

Oh… I’m a story in mourning, and you’re the author
So pour out your masterpiece.

Entropy increasing, how long before I’m dust?

Can we discuss?

Im originally from Birmingham(Alabama). Im equally fond of my memories of old ,scary trees ,old scary buildings and creeky floors as I am of Sunflowers and meadows there. I love Imogen Heap. She"ll take you to a gothic building on a tour then burst out the back door to a meadow...Docs n Dkheads call this bipolarism. I just feel its the beauty of real life

  2. J.... M....

  4. Z.... C....

Thinking of this from the perspective of a house is kind of cool.

  5. x.... ....

Today we made a contemporary combo to this song in dance, the teacher liked the volume all the way up. I was scared. In a good way

  6. L.... C....

    Garnet??

  7. d.... ....

This is what plavalaguna unreleased track would sound like

  8. N.... M....

Her voice here sounds a lot like Steven Universe's Garnet's

  9. J.... M....

Utterly transcendent - both song, lyrics and video. - This is the kind of true art that blasts away today's plastic 'pop-scape...'

  10. M.... ....

It almost feels like this ancient force trying to coerce me into joining it and carrying on its legacy

    I like it

  11. F.... S....

A deeply earthy and spiritual song. This song toes so many of life’s tensions. Love it.

  18. P.... T....

I just realised that apart form the everything else this music is stunning because there are no drums to spoil the rhythm of the melody. Bliss.

this gives me chills each time

  21. C.... K....

  22. V.... B....

I can sense a bit of Grimes in this song. Otherwise, a damn good song from a damn brilliant musician!

    V.... B....

Imogen Heap did it before Grimes did Lol

  23. S.... E....

Gaahh I love this whole song but I wish the "this is not what I stand for," and "stand/stop? in the name of love" bit was longer. ;-; It's so satisfying to listen to. Why is it so shooorrttt
Absolute poetry, she's a genius. I love her!

  24. J.... H....

    This is brilliant!

  25. J.... E....

This is the kind of music that blows Kate Bush's mind!

    And that's SAYING something!

    J.... E....

+John Erkman did she say something about this song?

    J.... E....

+(Not)James to the best of my knowledge, no. But still... How could Imogen NOT be influenced by Kate & vice verse???

    J.... E....

Well I'm almost certain that Imogen has been inspired by Kate Bush, it'd be interesting to hear if Kate reciprocated any adoration

  26. 1.... ....

    This needs more views.

  27. T.... ....

    Beautifully poetic :)

  28. S.... T....

    at one time
    i thought about space alot
    but....
it left me feeling empty inside

    :)

    immi imagination
seems to constantly expand into the vastness

    nice song

    S.... T....

+Stream Tree3 maybe Imogen's imagination... is the Universe?????

    S.... T....

    +ZacAttackk
    oh
it must take alot of energy
    to run an entire universe
    especially an expanding one
contracting ones are so much easier
    :)

  29. P.... ....

Holy hell is this sad. I've only seen that level of desperation in only a few people in my life. It's a really haunting and crippling feeling. Perfectly executed composition and video.

  30. C.... S....

    3:22 till the end <3

  31. T.... s....

The chills I get from this song...AMAZING.

  32. A.... B....

This song is so scary, but so relaxing?! Love the chord progression

  33. J.... J....

Love, love, love.... I bought this album a couple of days ago and must have listened to this song about 50 times on repeat, it's so amazing!

  34. s.... A....

me donne a chair de poule !! :))
génialissime ! i m glad i finally knew this song

  35. W.... H....

I love this song. It takes me back to Speak to Yourself for some reason.

  36. J.... C....

  37. D.... B....

    0:42
    Half-Life 3 Confirmed

  38. J.... R....

So much inspiration in one person. This is such a great artist - musically and visually

  39. S.... /....

    Her music scares me.

    In a good way.

    In a very good way.

    S.... /....

    Secret / Kido it's hunting isn't it?

  40. K.... ....

This video did not cover it, and it took me many listens to even catch it, but at the end of the album song Imogen whispers "Can we discuss?". That line really invokes thought, but I'm not sure what it means. Also, I want to believe that this song is about a derelict piano in an abandoned home, but a lot of the lyrics could apply to the building itself that contains the piano. I'm not a musician so there may be metaphorical imagery I do not get, but to what can windows and doorways with no doors refer to? Perhaps they are holes in the instrument, or missing keys; but I can not help but imagine a scene of leaves, wind-blown well beyond their time upon the threshold of a home. The desperate lovers seeking privacy provides stronger support of this song referring to a vacant and decaying home than the piano itself. The song holds more meaning to me from the perspective of a crumbling house that once protected its inhabitants than a piano that provided it with ambiance.

    Can we discuss?

    K.... ....

@Kraedi I think people want to read more into it and over-analyze... I believe it is about an old house, and in that vein, the old home would like to "discuss" whomever it is speaking to becoming its new owner and taking care of one another.

As soon as I read the lyrics alongside listening to it, I knew what it was about... it's like a creative writing prompt put to music. Very poetic, very haunting, and the potential for deeper meaning is there, but nothing fits as well as the obvious: an old, lonely, falling apart house longing to be... someone's home.

  41. .... ....

It's funny, when I first heard Hide & Seek, and Let Go, I thought, that's it. Pure perfection, so amazing, nothing could top that, it can't get any better than this. While every album afterwards by Inogen is genuinely good, I always remained certain that it's impossible to create a song better than those two. But now this reached my ears... And I'm amazed all over again. This is so shattering, haunting, poetically and metaphorically crafted, unbelievable. Neglected Space just might be my favorite Imogen song now. I hope it gets the critical reception it deserves!

  42. C.... K....

New favorite Immi song? I think so.

    C.... K....

    @xbeautyandthegeekx  Awww yeah!

  43. B.... W....

    I'm speechless

  44. D.... ....

    Thank you..

  45. R.... M....

    Brilliant! I love it!

  46. O.... R....

this sounds like a song that outros a movie

  47. W.... J....

Its about and old building being forgotten and crumbling to dirt and dust. She uses bricks from the building in the beginning to make the sounds.

    W.... J....

lol its a poem from the point of view of an old grand piano

    W.... J....

Actually it was about a dilapidated green house and garden .. But that's according to what immi said on the album...

    W.... J....

+Ricardo Williams no it's definitely from the POV of an abandoned house. The grand piano was only one aspect of the house. "Through my open wounds they let themselves in, sheltered." Definitely the house.

    W.... J....

+lux bledstone are you sure she said "green" house?

  48. K.... S....

She's trying some new things and I REALLY like it. Does anybody else picture outter space when they hear this?

  49. M.... B....

This is absolutely brilliant. It sounds like a really poetic way to describe song-making in all it's steps. The last verse music isn't beautiful without the experiences and feelings listeners tie onto the songs themselves.

  50. D.... H....

The chord progression beginning at 2:25 is incredibly beautiful.

  51. S.... H....

The lyrics in this song are beautifully placed

  52. _.... C....

The deep sound at the start of this song kinda makes me feel uncomfortable somehow. Anyone else get this as well? It's weird cause I feel like it shouldn't, but it does. Strange.

  53. R.... ....

I like the music for this a lot, out of all the new ones, one of the best. I wish it was a full on song, rather than so much spoken word. Oh well.

  54. A.... ....

Thank you ! Loved it ! Yes.   ~ Namaste.

  55. t.... ....

4:28 - 4:35 .....surely this is what is playing during the ascension to heaven...

  56. T.... ....

I wish more people could enjoy and appreciate her work.

    T.... ....

Shhh. She's secret. Yeah I agree w/ you.

  57. H.... S....

Imogen scares me a little bit.

    H.... S....

The crazy train Is coming I'm poppy I'm poppy I'm poppy I'm poppy I'm poppy

    H.... S....

    Just Embrace Imogen.

  58. Z.... ....

    JABBERWOCK HEAP!

  59. m.... a....

i love this women immensely, every song every word is as in my heart, a beautiful tradegy....Thank you Imogen
    Blessings

  60. S.... C....

I love this so much, I can't tell you how many times I've listens to this over and over again. Its beautiful.

  61. T.... L....

You can say that, but then you also have to look at something like this and see how amazing humanity can be as a species and the beautiful things it can create.

  62. D.... S....

    Amazing!

  63. a.... ....

    <3 <3 <3

  64. S.... ....

    This is absolutely amazing... Speechless.

  65. J.... ....

The simple fact that Miley Cyrus is more successful than Imogen Heap is proof conclusive that humanity sucks as a species.

    J.... ....

    You are so right!

  66. G.... L....

I think this is the deepest song ever written. IMMY YOU ARE THE BEST, LOVE YOU

  67. T.... ....

This is what real artistry sounds like.

  68. A.... ....

who would've thought to create a song about a neglected old house, and with the point of view of the house itself.

  69. T.... J....

Very interesting, unique artist / song. (And Jesus, please save me from your followers!)

  70. T.... S....

The first taste of a an artist is a revelatation.... ecstasy.

  71. L.... Y....

    Hail Satan.

  72. F.... ....

It's hard to be an artist because it's so easy to do exactly what others want... but you eventually find it's better to do what your creative eye tells you. There's only one of you. Only you can create your vision and you should support that rather than shame it. That's what this song tells me anyway. =]

Thanks for putting so much inspiration into the world, Imogen.

  73. L.... N....

    Soooo enchanting..hypnotizeing...

  74. A.... A....

Sounds like you were in a strange plaice....

  75. S.... H....

I've never empathized so much with an abandoned house before.

  76. N.... ....

But I was talking about the earth, not the human population.

  77. d.... ....

amazing talent. Even live. some performers stink live; not Imi.

  78. C.... ....

Imogen herself has stated that she does not want to stick to a certain style and being being dictated to to how others want her to sound. So basically all the people wanting her to be 'Speak For Yourself' all the time is the exact same people she dislikes. There's a reason why she has her own record label, own recording gear, does her own production, writes her own songs, because that means she can do whatever she wants musically without others dictating how her music sounds like.

  79. p.... ....

Does anyone know what that is, is it dust and water?

  80. J.... R....

have just lost count as to how many times i pushed REPLAY :)

  81. y.... ....

if you don't understand her music, is not her fault

  82. e.... l....

i never knew a person could be so amazing

  83. Z.... S....

No. If she experiments, then she has to be prepared to face criticism. Experimentation for experimentation's sake is not necessarily a good thing.

  84. A.... ....

    yes imogen!

  85. A.... ....

that was amazing, inspiring. reminds me of house of leaves. I love how she doesn't come off with the typical ideas. A paintbrush lost and found again.

  86. M.... J....

aren't we kind of past that (the Mozart/Da Vinci packaging of "genius")?

there's kind of too many people for any one individual to be so universally lauded, that it really becomes a responsibility of the individual to recognize such people for themselves (as you and others are doing here).

but what is there beyond appreciation of art? i have an idea, but that's kind of where i am right now.

  87. D.... ....

    Just amazing!

  88. G.... N....

Ok. Own up. Who chose not to tell me about Imogen?! Never mind - I've found her now and I shall bathe in her art.

  89. A.... ....

Imogen heap is great but, careful how you use your opinion. If someone is truly great they don't need (wether themselves or their fans) to bring down others (for example making rap seem worse just because it probably isn't your taste, there is rap that is good). It's all about your taste and whether or not you expect a meaningful message in each song you listen to. That's just how I see it though.

  90. X.... G....

Probably because 7 billion human beings on earth cannot generate 100 billion views

  91. r.... m....

This song is like a poetry, good for a meditation about the life: the contemporary society requests are mostly against this way to talk and think.Himogen is a smart woman!

  92. E.... F....

This is amazing, a wonderful meditation piece. Always loved Imogen! <3

  93. T.... ....

There will never be another Mozart or DaVinci. There will simply be new names of influence.

On another note, Personally, I'd say Imogen, Gotye, Sigur Ros, Aphex Twin, and I'll even say deadmau5 (because of his strong desire to preserve his style and not "sell out" to popular masses like other artists) are probably some of your top contenders for our generation.

  94. i.... ....

loved her since Frou Frou. still different, inventive, artistic, and a bit scary.

  95. C.... ....

This comment should be top comment tbh. ROFL.

  96. T.... ....

    >rap
    >noise

do you even listen to hip-hop?

imogen heap is awesome but wow

  97. N.... ....

That's not what my instinct tells me.

  98. N.... ....

It was clearly a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment.
