Hawkwind - Moonglum Lyrics

Moonglum, friend without a reason
Moonglum, friend without a cause
Embarrassed by a show of love
But would stand by the man of the feeble blood

This bond meant much more to him
Than a kingdom offered by a queen
No words for this silent trust
As the Sword goes on to sate its lust

Moonglum and Elric hunting Theleb K'aarna
Myshella now replacing Queen Yishana
See them travel through open skies
See the amazing steel bird fly

Armies stand, soon to fall
Sorcery is the tune they call
Pitting wit against flesh and gall
Timeless searching in timeless halls

Wandering out to meet his death
To find this was no release
Searching for some sort of ease
Denying feelings that made him weak

Moonglum and Elric hunting Theleb K'aarna
Myshella now replacing Queen Yishana
See them travel through open skies
See the amazing steel bird fly

Hawkwind Moonglum Comments

Yes great song by HLL. Marty Willson-Piper of the Church must have been listening this this. Check out his song Spark on the Starfish LP.

  2. Spirit Of The Age

Brilliant....except the video is kind of ruined by suddenly cutting out before the end of the song....any chance of sorting this please ?

  3. Simon Johansen

YouTube's randomly generated playlists put this just after a synthwave track and the Hawkwind song did not feel out of place in the slightest, that says a lot about how ahead of their time Hawkwind's cross between hard guitar rock and experimental electronic music has been if you ask me!

  4. Daryl Barclay

    Goosebumps every single time

  5. Jack Duncan

I was at that gig. I’d taken two black microdots. The experience was epic, mindblowing. I left still tripping and my ears ringing. I was young and reckless. I wish now that I’d been sober and enjoyed the performance for what it was. I was young and heavily into hallucinogens at the time. When I went and saw Motörhead I was cracking the whip hard on speed. It was so incredible that I saw Motörhead a number of times afterwards. Most of the times I was using speed, sometimes I was sober as a judge. They were always amazing, but in my opinion Motörhead were better when experienced on speed.
“speed don’t kill and I’m the proof”. 😤

  6. Hasla Hali

Most Swedish sounding song ever! :D

  7. Narrowboat Desiree

There's no doubt about it, Huw Lloyd-Langton was a fantastic and very under-rated musician. I was lucky enough to see probably a dozen Hawkwind gigs with him as lead guitarist.

  8. Tee Jay

    Huw Lloyd-Langton RIP

  9. theric66

memory lane , this is the first that i saw hawkwind i was 19, shit life goes too quick , the year after at the reading festival 86 and many more times after that.

  20. Ricardo Castillo

This band never knew how to retain talent. This guy is the best of all their guitar players.

  21. Paul Gray

Huw taken far to soon...when the band was good without the nasty band politics of late...

  26. Oldbatwit

Eww. Very weedy compared to their earlier stuff, pretty much pop music.

  29. Rouggar Redsun

    One of my favourite songs!

However, Moonglum needs to be combined with Elric the Enchanter (Moonglum>Elric the Enchanter ) for full effect.
Having it just cut off in the edit, diminishes a touching piece of work.

  30. Klingler Hannes

    Huw❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  31. Pete Wild

Was privileged to first see Huw in 1980 on the Levitation tour. The man was a master of his craft, his voice, so perfect, his guitar, unique, sweet, simply brilliant, but sadly so undervalued. I, for one, am so grateful to humbly bear witness his existence. Long may his glow radiate and warm both ours and hopefully future souls. I can't even begin to appreciate the pain of those close to him :(

  32. Pat

  39. channel one

Not only was he an amazingly original and innovative guitarist, but he had a great voice too.

    Tacsense

in the list of unknown greats..Huw is number 1.
ive had to make folk listen to him for years, only hawkwind fans and a few others know his work.
when they hear him, they remember him though ;-)

  40. Big Dave Kilbride

Man I love this song god bless you huw.

  41. MrUrbancannibal

RIP Huw. Best of the best.

  42. Pat Feelan

Miss you huw ,hawks are going thru the final change and i think there will be one more incarnation before they finish and the legend of hawkwind will leave for another dimension wth mr brock unless nik pulls something together ??They have been lost for sometime now and considering the classics they have done its sad, dibs as nicer guy as he is has to be the worst vocalist apart from wisheart that they have had.

    Thanks for posting the lyrics.
I've listened to this song for years not knowing the lyrics to the chorus :)

Now I can sing them at the top of my voice and really piss off the neighbours :D

    james morgan

@globulant99 You're more than welcome, saw your comment 5 minuets ago and just had to come back and sing along myself :))

    Legends 👍😎

  53. Oily Rag

This has to be my favorite HLL song, it captures the spirit of Moorcock's novels and Hawkwind's commitment to producing the finest rock music.

  54. karloschaos

Leeds Uni on the same tour. Drove from Hull there. Left car near the Uni. Great gig. Drive home but no car - nicked! Hey Ho.

  55. oldmarmot

Great song, great line-up, Huw's voice is great. Great great great.

  56. Shane Seccombe

I so wish I Was there. Timeless and at his best
    ! God bless you hugh

  57. fattwat1

    Amazing sound

  58. David Matthews

Always loved hawkwind more when huey was with them

  59. David Dalrymple

So glad I got to see the band play this live in 2000. The Hawkestra gig was a mess in a lot of ways, but it still stands as a singular, irreplaceable evening.

  60. mick taylor

any moorcock fans listening to moonglum

  61. matt cheltenham

Huw fans may be interested to go to Crimson Guitars channel to see Huw's Les Paul being given some TLC

  62. Mark Fisher

he held a chord for 10 minutes! i was there.

  63. matt dillon

As a kid, sitting in the back of a Trans-Am, I knew why Carlos Santana made my head & the universe spin and I had to grip the sides of the seat. As 13yr old Stoner, I knew why dark side of the moon had such a hard hitting effect.
I was already versed in the best of the best. It was a time of Wonder, when everything in the universe was fresh and new; I was at this very show in 85, I was at torpedo, welsh free festivals, glasto, acid daze finsbury park 87, countless others. It wasn't the LSD, there was just no precedent for the profudity of the effect that Hawkwind had on me - it changed something in me, like the entire direction of my consciousness - but to watch Huw here is sublime. Even as a musician myself ever since, I still can't put my finger on the whys of Hawkwinds impact. If I could have one wish it would be, In my next life, standing on the bridge of a starship blasting through space and someone say ' here, check this vid out ' . Coldplay, don't treacle me in that suffocating apathy and choking mediocrity you've lobotomised the current generation with - thanks all the same.

  64. Paul Wood

HLL Every time I listen to this a massive shiver moment Much missed and a fantastic musician

  65. John Skorupa

    Hawkwind kickin ass

  66. ernie curl

What a banging tune love it

  67. gibson sg

perhaps the most underrated lead guitarist. RIP HUW

    globulant99

Underrated, but not bitter, just a really great guy.
BTW, your YTube name is my avatar, I think she might date back to 63/64

    TheHeraclion

gibson sg must be because am old now didn’t know Hll was no more took few mind alternating drugs back then

    Nick Cox

Totally agree, as good as Eric Clapton, if not better....just my opinion.

  68. Lorena Menneri

Non esistono espressioni, sorrisi, chiacchiere che non possano sostituire il feeling che si instaura attraverso la MUSICA!

  69. Ken Collinson

Did Huw slip in a little bit of Elvish ?

  70. Mark Harwood

    Utterly wonderful.

  71. Richard Gash

as brilliant today as it ever was.l was tall dark and thin then age 15 fat now but never given up the cause thinking of you hugh the best lead guitarist ever ! he would have a nice long spliff on stage too!

  72. robsky69

Hairs just stand up all over my body listening to Huw!!! God bless you and thanks for the inspiration

  73. Trinitarian

Sometimes, I think Huw overplayed the lead but at other time, like here, it was sheer brilliance. This was also Danny Thompson's finest performance with Hawkwind.

    Leaving Nadir

Huw is a fine expressionist at guitar in my humble opinion.

  74. Sean G

    Thanks; such happy memories...

  75. mick taylor

    huw and brock and harvey

  76. williamgeorgefraser

Why would 4 cunts vote this down? I saw Hawkwind, Man and Magma on tour in Toulouse in 1975: the 3 greatest bands in history. Hawkwind changed me from pop to progressive when I saw them in 1970, Magma took me to heaven.

  77. jewelled froot

The best I can say of Huw is that when I re-read the Elric books I hear him sing and play. He is part of the poetry of that world

  78. Lord Jagged

    Ah..Theleb K'aarna..what a twat he was.

  79. SPHERICAL CHESS

HLL was Hawkwind's Best ever guitarist! I saw him with HW just before he left us.

  80. TOECUTTER200

    Epic huw miss you

  81. Admiral Reynard

Im fairly new to Hawkwind, but its so obvious in this short time just what a loss to Hawkwind Huw Loyd Langton is.

  82. Admiral Reynard

Brilliant! Love this song! Ive been trying to hear more from the same line-up, but the band seems to have changed many times over the years.

    Screw This Noise Already

It is definitely one of those bands with a frequently revolving line up. Just the way it is. Cofounder Dave Brock is the only original member now.

  83. Andy Mackie

Was privileged to have him teach me the intro and the chords: a truly great guitarist and musician and as honest and open a human as anyone I've met.

    globulant99

A great memory I'm sure, feeling slightly jealous :)

    It's such a loss he's no longer here :(

    Andy Mackie

I am not a special person - Huw would teach or speak to anyone anytime

    TimGuitar.co.uk

Andy Mackie Huw was a real gentleman.

    Tacsense

Andy Mackie you lucky blighter ;-)

  84. globulant99

For me personally, Hawkwind during one of their highest points. Huw Loyd Langton and Alan Davey, such a great combination, they are so in-sync working together.

There is a look between them at 3:40 that goes beyond words and shows how in tune they are with each other.

    One of Huw's great songs.

    We miss you mate!

    Motoroil

I cant look... makes me cry

    globulant99

@Motoroil Year, always brings a few tears to my old eyes.

    Darren Baker

    globulant99 he’s genius ! Onward fly’s the Bird ✊🏻

    Revolt live Rocks in Maryland

There is a turn around and look and smile from Brock, right after a cool Bass run and Huw singing at 2:23, that says , yea, this is great.

  85. Simon Cooper

    Just brilliant

  86. KrashBandyKay

This is just so awesome 🎤 I've seen them 3 times in My younger years 👱 still good now as it was then 🎼 and holds a special place in My heart 💝

  87. CK Hawk

Still my favorite song of hundreds !! Long live the hawk !! In us ! And all around us !!!

  88. Joseph Loehr

Don't believe there's a Studio Version of this. Awesome song!

    Screw This Noise Already

Unfortunately, I am almost positive there is not, at least not officially released. My research of the band is not tops, but I am very familiar with their back catalogue.
This version from Live Chronicles is still amazing!

  89. NORTHERN BEACHES PA HIRE

    Huw legend period

  90. Stormbringer

This song made me research Michael Moorcock. Gimme Hawkwind any day lol

    Screw This Noise Already

It was the other way around for me. In 82 I was researching a book report in high school on Michael Moorcock. Looking into his musical alliances lead me to Hawkwind. Been a huge fan since the first album I played!

    Lord Jagged

I read M.M religiously back in the day and there are some real gems amongst his huge output. Apart from the obvious eternal champion series inc Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon and Erekose, 'The dancers at the end of time' trilogy is brilliant. A few others that spring to mind are 'The transformation of miss mavis ming', 'Behold the man' and 'The golden barge'..

  91. etha s

sidenote; moonglum is the unsung eternal hero of moorcocks elric multiverse and really imo his self sacrifice is what brought in the new world at the end of time. xoxooxo

    Screw This Noise Already

Spoilers! But a good read of the character, yes

  92. MoodyDude

Huw really drove Hawkwind through the 80s

  93. jag17us

wonderful. for me, Live Chronicles is Huw's finest hour.

  94. Jess Lynch

A big part of hawkwind that is gone but never forgotten.

  95. Reg Niblet

    Melody, soul, genius

  96. Konstantinos Poumpouridis

    Amazing!!!

  97. Anthony Loftis

    One of the best!

  98. john driver

    Amazing tune. Never fades.

  99. Simon Booth

Something happened to us back there ?....I felt a shift x Was it futureshock or a memory x

  100. bumberchuff

fuckin ace ..Huw was the greatist
