Hawkwind - A Solitary Man Lyrics

On a desert island I would sing
About love and stress, almost anything
Am I lonely? Yes, I am
But I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man

A dream of a white sandy beach
Turquoise sea and coconuts to eat
No constant chatter, no Internet
Am I lonely? Yes, I am
But I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man

There's a few things that I would miss
A bit of love and someone to kiss
Maybe my dog, a ball, and a bone
Am I lonely? Yes, I am
But I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man

I didn't know what I know
I didn't know what I know
I didn't know what I know

There's a few things that I would miss
A bit of love and someone to kiss
Maybe my dog could throw a man a bone
Am I lonely? Yes, I am
But I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man
I was always a solitary man

    The Captain lives.....and Chadwick too....HAWKWIND....

  2. a.... m....

hawkwind calls it, to go inward into oneself as a defence against this mad world.

  3. J.... G....

  4. w.... ....

A bit disappointed a first. Saw the title and thought I was about to hear Dave and the boys covering the old Neil Diamond song. Just kidding

This is quite good. There’s something about the song that reminds me - a bit - of Hurry On Sundown and some of their folkier songs from the first album(in 1969, Right?).

  5. i.... m....

Love Hawkwind but this is not that great, could be a decent song but the drumming is very poor and could do with some lead guitar, sign me up Mr Brock, I give this song more life, I could be the new Hew

  6. F.... m....

    Aceeeeeeeeeeeeeeed! Step back in time

  7. g.... ....

really think they have lost themselves  these days , something missing Allan Davey maybe . a bit more oomph .

  8. B.... C....

Bang Trim says Solitary Man is the best song Hawkwind has ever done.

  9. M.... ....

Definitive list of the great Hawkwind albums for those younger folks thinking about investing in some Hawkwind music.

    X In Search Of Space
    Doremi Fasol Latido
    Space Ritual
    Hall Of The Mountain Grill
Warrior On The Edge Of Time
    Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music
    25 Years
    Electric Tepee
    Alien
    The Business Trip
    The Business Of The Future

The first two are probably the finest albums of all time and Space Ritual is Pretty much those two albums live.
Please don't listen to the recent output and think it represents what once was, most of it is mediocre at best, look to the earlier stuff and be blown away.
I hope they look to the past to give us one last great album before calling it a day, they deserve to go out in a blaze of glory.

  10. C.... B....

Who's left?l Brock and Chadwick! They don't make Hawkwind! How many great members have left over money Mr Brock? RIP Hawkwind

  11. P.... C....

  12. A.... H....

    Lovely bit of space punk.

  13. J.... ....

I do hear traces of "Magnu" in this song with the violin, anybody else hear it?  Otherwise, this song is rather boring.  Video is interesting though.

  14. M.... U....

Did a Albatross design this video?

  15. T.... L....

alot of their music at certain points in time reminds me of the Beatles. Only the chorus in this one. Good stuff!

  16. w.... ....

So lost its soul since Alan Davey was replaced. he's a good producer too. I cant watch them anymore, they killed it for me.:-(

    w.... ....

Did you see any shows on the last tour?

    w.... ....

They obviously didn't otherwise they wouldn't have posted that! Best tour in a long, long time.

  17. M.... W....

I find this wonderful! So god. After nearly 50 years the most get very nice and easy. Not Hawkwind, they keep their way. I have the most records, yet another statement

  18. l.... ....

As a lifelong Hawkwind fan i find this terrible! Jeez, So sad...

  19. S.... ....

    This new stuff is crap..

  20. S.... ....

Pop music. The album was just simple, ordinary rock music and poorly produced. No bite, no attack no ideas all very tired.

  21. V.... A....

A return to form, great song great video.

  22. T.... M....

    i fink it kinda,,suppose its ok,,but,,,nevermind

  23. E.... ....

Bloody horrible...  All quark and no charm...   The bands best is well and truly behind them.

  24. s.... c....

Sounds like Chas and Dave on Acid, Brocky has always struggled without the conflicting ego's to inspire

  25. m.... ....

powerful stuff, always what i expect from capt brock and the gang or anyone associated with hawkwind

  26. J.... W....

Who played violin on this? Fred?

    J.... W....

+John Walsh It doesn't specifically say it on the sleeve notes but yes I would think it was Fred.

  27. V.... B....

By eck ,I've got this album next to me with the cellophane on ,waiting for the right moment to play it ,don't like this track at all :( Is the rest of the album any better?

    V.... B....

+Violet Blue I'm not crazy about it either, and for the same reason I don't like a lot of their recent stuff. They still seem to have songwriting ideas, and the spacy sounds can still work, but there's something about the production that is too cluttered and makes it difficult to listen to.

    V.... B....

It's difficult to listen to because it's boring.

  28. K.... G....

This song is O.K, but nothing compared with the old 70's stuff, this is no Psychedelic Warlords is it?.....It could do with being heavied up.

  29. d.... ....

first band i ever followed and saw live , always loved them but this song sounds like cliche's from all their songs put together , lacks the Hawkwind vibe and depth . Shame but nothing lasts forever and you cant knock a band that has existed for that long .

    d.... ....

+donkey2lathe Go see them live - this song in no way represents how they sound live. They didn't even play this one. The gig last week was the nearest to early 70s Hawkwind I've ever heard them.

  30. .... ....

    oh........heavy wind...

  31. j.... ....

This has the distinct feel of Dave's solo demo type stuff, with the disco polka beat he loves so much on the old four track. It's very Agents Of Chaos.

  32. T.... A....

Not good like,  sounds like " Damage of Life", Brock's voice is really tired, Drummer is horrendous, I've never seen a half decent Hawky gig since "Levitation", total waste of money going to see the Band, it was a 1h 10 min show at one point, and that dross "Out of the shadows" video I attended at Newcastle, my God.

    T.... A....

+tom alexander Have you seen then recently? The gig last night in London was the best performance I can ever remember and that's going back a long time. The new bassist Haz (playing like a reincarnation of Lemmy way beyond what Alan Davy ever achieved) has injected a whole new lease of life into the band, especially Dave and they are totally on fire. For instance you won't believe how good they are doing Orgone Accumulator and The Watcher. And the songs from the new album are awesome live, especially "In my Room" and "Synchronised Blue".

    T.... A....

My son went to see Hawky in Newcastle/Gateshead the other day, sent me a vid of Silver Machine, I could never understand why the riff has been changed, I've seen that drummer a few times, he spoils the band, I could never play bass to him, he's all over the place, you don't know how much me and my Bro have tried to like Brock's Hawkwind, but it's like watching an unrehearsed tribute band playing, granted, I havn't seen this line up, my Son did say it sounded better than before though

    T.... A....

@tom alexander "That drummer" has been with the band for about 25 years. "Brock's Hawkwind" is Hawkwind. I'm presuming you've never been asked to play bass with them.

    T.... A....

Hawky songs are a bit too straight forward for me, as much as I like them, David Brock's "Hawkwind" sounds like Dave Brock, very good in his own right, but not Hawkwind

    T.... A....

Richard has been Hawkwind for 28 years ..best drummer since Mr King imho

  33. D.... M....

    worst video seen in years

  34. S.... K....

outstanding album that is climbing the charts and sold out across the tour xx

  35. D.... H....

Picked this album up today. Didn't even know it was coming out but decided to chance it. It's a better. sounds like classic Hawkwind all the trademarks are there. I don't think this is the best track on the album either.....

  36. s.... ....

The new album is fantastic, well done Hawkwind.

    s.... ....

+safeashouses211 I agree it is a fantastic album. Best one they've done for many, many years. Can't wait to see it live next week!

    s.... ....

    +Fractal ien Same here, mate!

  37. P.... G....

just not feeling it personally ..... Dave is a LOUSY singer , the song kinda goes from boring to muddled .., as soon as I started to play it .. I just though ..oh NOOOO ....back to Rod Jane and Freddy type melodies ... sorry but its true

    P.... G....

I think Dave has a great voice.

  38. u.... ....

Reminds me of Damage Of Life Crossed with Gimme Shelter. You can't beat a bit of Brocky :)

  39. P.... C....

not as good since huw went. needs a ripping guitar solo.but still ok.

  40. B.... S....

I really like this, a coherent song. This has a feel to their early 80s period which I love. Hope there are more like this on the album. Looking forward to the release. Thanks for the upload.

  41. d.... ....

After a couple of listens this has really wormed its way in & I find myself singing it when I'm doing stuff around the house. Makes me think of the 80s albums, and Dave's vocal reminds me of 'Damage of Life.' Gets a thumbs up from me.

    d.... ....

+daunrussell Same, it really grows on you doesn't it ?

    d.... ....

+Tom Rattler Absolutely - I'm expecting great things of the album!

    d.... ....

Same here M8 Gonna get me that Vinyl !!

  42. G.... P....

Melodically, it reminds me of an old Social Distortion song.
They just have not been the same since Davey left. They sound like their well is running dry.
Oh well, it was a good, long run.

    G.... P....

+Greg P would that be Social Distortion song be Story of my Life?

    G.... P....

    @Alan Taylor yup

    G.... P....

+Greg P The new bassist Haz is even better than Alan Davey and they are amazing live on this tour.
It has been a good long run and there is no sign that the well is running dry. If anything it is starting to overflow again.

    G.... P....

agreed, Haz is great and band is re-energized on this tour

    G.... P....

Haz is good but he's not yet in the same league as Alan Davey.

  43. J.... M....

    Its not very good, shame

    J.... M....

    +Julian Motture unfortunately, I agree

  44. E.... ....

cheers for this - I can only watch the visuals as my sound card has gone, worth it tho;)

    E.... ....

+Exisles I have listened to it with my eyes shut, as a gesture of solidarity.
