Harry Nilsson - What'll I Do? Lyrics

Gone is the romance that was so divine.
'tis broken and cannot be mended.
You must go your way,
And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...

What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do?

What'll I do?
When I am wond'ring who
Is kissing you
What'll I do?

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When I'm alone
With only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do?

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When I'm alone
With only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do?

Harry Nilsson What'll I Do? Comments
  1. Themanwhocameback2

God bless Gordon Jenkins. It is he who makes this recording great, Nilsson's vocal is secondary, though I love it, too.

  2. Monkey JUMP

"Sigh"....all of his words are true for me right now...Never thought this song would become so accurate :/ but somehow it's much more beautiful to listen to now that it is..

  11. Leonardo Ribeiro

  12. Gail Williams

He sings (he sang) these standards so lovingly.  It's hard to put this and "Put the Lime in the Coconut" together.

  13. Dick Domane

Knew Harry back in the day.  Very talented young man back then.  He came to a lot of my sessions.  Miss him.

  14. Don Mendelson

Sure reminds me of Randy Newman. Is this one of the songs he did with Randy???

  15. boonestead

  17. Mauricio Durón

Thanks! 2.5 minutes of exquisite musicmaking. Extensive appreciation to I. Berlin and to Gordon Jenkins.

  18. Liche Christ

    what could be lovlier?

    Zed Dravot

Judy Holiday, perhaps. Every slightly my preference. These are the very best interpretations, and third place isn't close.

I recently heard Willie Nelson's rendition of this song. It left me a blubbering mess. Tears and snot. But the timber, timing, and range of Harry's voice...

  19. Steve Fackrell

About as good as it gets for me.

  20. Tita Evans-Santini

Tender, moving, endearing, heartbreaking. RIP Harry. I loved your voice and music.

  21. beatletech1

Harry also did a Beatles cover album. Some of the songs are better than the Beatle's versions .

  22. Sam Hodkin

It is an Irving Berlin song, simple as.

  23. Rich Johnson

I listened to all the other artist that did this song, I don't think any compered with Harry nilsson.A voice of smooth silk.It slides through your ears, and correses your heart.

  24. Butch Lake

i thought it was an irving berlin song

  25. Mary Waterson

Thank you todd, for your lovely message, they were truly devoted to each other.

  26. todd canton

They never lost those years, it just cemented their relationship for a lifetime. What a romantic story you tell....thx

  27. DocChoas

Harry's sincerity makes listening to this almost like eavesdropping on a prayer. I mourn for an artist who, had he lived, would have been as famous as anyone in history. In a way that's ok, those of us who know his music would almost feel exposed by our love of it. How it seems to hit all of us so personally speaks albums and volumes. Goodbye Harry, you have all our hearts and that means you're with us still.

  28. Mary Waterson

Two years older than I am, My dad had to go away to work on the airfields in readiness for the war which everyone new was coming. He was 19 and my mum was 17 years old, it was after he had gone that my mum realised how much she loved him, thus this was their song. Dad had loved my mum since he was 12 years old. They had 51 very happy years of marriage, they lost 4 of them when he was in WW2. Thank you.

My Mum played harry all the time when I was growing up........the world is a little darker for his passing all those years ago. Playing his songs is like creating a little bit of magic.

  46. RondalaE

What a beautiful song of I think the 1920's,and sung by Harry Nilsson is pure magic. Thanks a lot.

  47. Philpotts24

I don't understand why this album [Schmilsson in the Night] and the follow up, were not mentioned in the otherwise excellent documentary on BBC1, last night. Superb arangements by the maestro, Gordon Jenkins.

  48. DanielKarbonMusic

@Eugene9077 What exactly was the documentary called? It sounds interesting.

  61. Terry Corcoran

This is what music sounds like in Heaven....

  62. Ramon Boronda

This album and its CD version appear with regularity on eBay. There shouldn't be any difficulty in finding it. It's worth the effort.

  63. cliftongal51

I bought A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the NIght in Arizona in 1974, but how would you find it now - good question. Until I heard him sing all the standards, I didn't appreciate the true character of his voice. Utterly wonderful...

  64. emh26

I love this in The Great Gatsby, song is perfect for the theme. So lovely.

  65. Terry Corcoran

I was amazed that Harry was from Brooklyn. Many people thought that he was English. His mother dragged him across the country as a child, settling in a dumpy apartment near Brewery Row in Brooklyn. He was the only White kid in his school and was repeatedly beaten because of it. "I know why the caged bird sings"...Maya Angelou

  66. Bamaboompa

" A Little Touch..." was sold here, I believe I had a copy.
It knocked my socks off first time I heard this.

  67. greensmyth

does anyone know how to get a hold of A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night II? it was only produced in Britain and, as far as I can tell, never sold in the states.

  68. frankbing1

I always remember my dad having "A Touch Of Smilsson" on a 8 track player in an old ford Zephyr in the early 70's , i would have been about 6-7 at the time, even from an early age i found myself hooked on this guy and still play is music often, R.I.P Harry.

  69. TheMadSyrupMaker

@TheMadSyrupMaker "Nilsson, a little touch of Schmilsson", that's better.

  70. TheMadSyrupMaker

I believe this album is named, "Nilsson, a touch of Smilsson".

  71. MrZsportsgeek

Brilliantly captures the essence of the 30's & 40's; Thanks a million for the touching post!

  72. MoveOverCasanova

very much like somewhere over the rainbow

I once had a double LP of Harrys with renditions of many older songs this one was on that LP but I have not been able to find it since.

    güliiiz, aşkım

bu şarkı bizim şarkımız olsun mu:(
    bence olsun...

  75. Adam Burns

I recently tried hunting down what was (in my opinion) the best version of this...it's a standard rom the early 30's I think...and it was between Nillson's version, and Art Garfunkel's...but I've got to say, for clarity and sheer beauty...Harry, you've done it.

  76. jefgain

Fantastic video, with color, the editing and the images. I love the song and the singer too.

  77. RLP1972

  82. Poopaloo55

'A little touch...' has been re-released with added tracks that were cut from the original....it's a gem. We truly lost a treasure when we lost Harry.

  83. yindyamarra

this isnt a special begining its the real Irving Berlin lyrics to the song,

Gone is the romance that was so divine.
'Tis broken and cannot be mended
    You must go your way,
    And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...

    What'll I do
    When you are far away
    And I am blue
    What'll I do?

  84. roger dukeshire

can someone tell me. Is this a special beginning or has everyone else just omitted it before? I have never heard this version of the beginning before

  85. bon1042

I remember it from Gatsby too. I bought the VHS video and it's not used, there's some substitute instrumental, so disappointing. It's about royalties and ownership issues I think.

  86. iamjezuzchrist

This wasnt such a "little" touch... was it? :P

  87. imdanhoover

    one of a kind..

  88. Zoe Sun

  89. wayofthecass

For anyone who cares this version of the song was from Harry's album
'A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night' (1973) (RCA Records), US #46
Several other famous songs are covered on it.

  90. Beth Barone
