Harry Nilsson - Mournin' Glory Story Lyrics

She wakes up, she finds herself sleeping in a doorway
Wondering how she ever got that way
She fights her tears away, then prays for no more sorrow
Will tomorrow be the same as yesterday

She tasted from the tree of life which lead to hunger
Now she wonders how she'll ever carry on
She thinks about the life she knew when she was younger
Heaven help her now those days are long since gone

She wakes up, she finds herself sleeping next to no one
And it's no fun when there's no one's there to see
She looks down at her feet, "My God, they sure look dirty
7:30, time to be or not to be"

She cries out, "Won't somebody listen to my story
Mournin' glories aren't supposed to happen today
She wakes up, she finds herself sleeping in a doorway
Wondering how she ever got that way

For all the lonely lovers in the world.💔

This album was a fold out. The Picture of the lady wino was a shock. My girlfrends sister played this song and I was Hooked. Told my mom I would like it for Chistmass and she was hooked when she heard it. We bought all his records and miss Harry.

  3. N.... T....

It is just a wonderful piece of music

  4. S.... Z....

you cannot be a human being and not cry when you hear this masterpiece.

    S.... Z....

    I'm a "human being" & I'm not crying.

  5. S.... Z....

    S.... Z....

    Harry's amazing.

    S.... Z....

Summer in the early 70's with the profound sounds of Harry...our large family listened to the best...from Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Harry Chapin, Simon and Garfinkle, Crosby, Stills etc. But, Harry's lyrics, put to his music, and his most exquisite gift - his voice,...nothing comes close to Harry Nilson. Thank you Harry Nilsson.

  6. M.... D....

I suspect this will be my  end

    B.... F....

I suspected the same when I used to listen to this all the time.

  10. C.... P....

  11. 7.... ....

it's a tough call which of his first three albums is the best one ,...all excellent ,..but "Harry" is certainly special ,...

    7.... ....

    I agree 👍

  12. B.... ....

Haunting and brilliant as usual. RIP Harry!

  13. D.... ....

You gotta stop giving up and start playing and recording again. Not only would Harry want that but everyone else needs/deserves to have more artists creating that are influenced - but more importantly - INSPIRED by great musicians like him.

  14. s.... ....

Not many songs about the homeless in 1969..Harry was a great artist.

  15. r.... ....

its awesome how john lennon is quoted as saying harry nilsson is one of the beatles favorite artists and seeing the similarities between this song and the beatles "for no one". I love seeing where roots grow!

  16. G.... ....

I like what Al Kooper said in the Harry documentary, "He probably wound up influencing the Beatles as much as they influenced him."
5' 10, a man among men, Harry you left a lot of music behind.

  17. G.... ....

I heard that this was written as a "where are they now" reply to "She's Leaving Home".

  18. p.... ....

is it me or this sounds a bit like the beatles' for no one? love both, by the way.

  19. T.... B....

loved this song since I was a teenager......about 40 years ago. Still holds the same emotion as it did when I was 17. thanks for posting this one.

    T.... B....

Tracy Barber this song reminds me of my childhood and before I lost my innocence, and I'm only 16 lol but i feel like I was such a different person then with friends I never knew I'd lose and people I never knew I'd meet. Now I feel so exhausted from the past year or so to the point where I feel like I just woke up sleeping in a doorway wondering how I ever got that way. I wonder if there's some symbolism with the choice of a doorway?

    T.... B....

I believe Nilsson did write this tune after he witnessed an old woman sleeping in the doorway of a building in New York. Life changes rapidly and change is good my friend, you probably don't have nearly the same amount of hardship as the homeless person previously mentioned. It's good you can appreciate this type of music at a young age.

  20. t.... ....

No, there'll never be another Harry Nilsson because the era, with it's inspirational factors, for that type of songwriter is LONG gone.
You'd have to have a time machine to re-capture that whole era.

    t.... ....

    Your thoughts nailed it.

  21. t.... ....

Along with ''Eleanor Rigby''' & "'The Days Of Pearly Spencer"' this is a total masterpiece of melancholia.

  22. s.... ....

I'd never heard that said, just always knew it was highly reminiscent of it.

  23. c.... b....

Isn't/wasn't Harry wonderful? Thanks for sharing!!

  24. B.... M....

This song is so beautiful, it almost hurts to listen to it.

  25. a.... ....

@Shapelander HA! Unfortunately, my theme song is: "A Day in the Life of a Fool." I my best Sinatra voice (bad) "A day...in the life...an Al..." lol

    Warmly,

    Al

  26. B.... D....

She holds her hand out waiting for someone to feed her, but no one does ever come her way.
She falls asleep curled up inside the freezing doorway, not a blanket to protect her from harms way.

    Harry's lost lyrics

  27. s.... ....

Just got this on Vinyl Beautiful record, beautiful song.

  28. S.... ....

Apparently written as a sequel to "She's Leaving Home".... not a very happy ending!

  29. R.... F....

this is one of my 'top' favourites ... i remember kenny everett playing it and I got the bus straight into town and bought it ... all those years ago and it's still as fresh ... sadly he died far far too soon ...but what a good legacy he left ...thanks for posting this shapelander.

  30. 4.... ....

I couldn't agree more. He was the real deal.

  31. A.... M....

totally gorgeous. Can any other singer protray the drugs and home less situation in such a comfy and we are on the other side of it all. Well done Harry!!!

  32. d.... ....

One can hope. Doubt it. But one can hope. So glad my mom and uncle were such huge fans. Have all his LP's. And I do mean vinyl.

  33. D.... t....

nillson was a genius - no wonder he and lennon used to hang out - two geniuses on the piss!

  34. B.... ....

wow!!! I would have to say that this is the greatest voical performance i've ever heard! Nothing can or will ever put this song to shame. R.I.P. HARRY!!!

  35. i.... ....
