Harry Nilsson - Love Story Lyrics

I like your brother and I like your mother
I like you and you like me too
We'll get a preacher, I'll buy a ring
We'll hire a band with an accordion
And a violin and a tenor who can sing.

You and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me.

We'll have a kid or maybe we'll rent one
He's got to be straight 'cause we don't want no bent one
He'll drink his baby brew from a big brass cup
Some day he may be president if things loosen up.

You and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me, baby
You and me, you and me, you and me.

I'll take the train into the city every morning
You may be plain but I think you're pretty in the morning
Some nights we'll go out dancin' if I am not too tired
And some nights we'll sit romancin', watchin' the late show by the fire.

When our kids are grown, with kids of their own
They'll send us away to a little home in Florida
We'll play checkers all day 'till we pass away.

    Oh that's much better.

Harry is better than any singer. If you don't believe me listen to only him for a month. Instead of being sick of it you will only want to hear harry the rest of your life.

  5. R.... K....

    harry had great pipes ...

  6. J.... S....

So many memories. Us boys lived on this album. Now we cry when we hear it.

  7. H.... K....

    dit zeg het al

  8. J.... S....

I remember this being played on the radio sung by Peggy Lee.   It had to be one of her last hits to get steady airplay, and made an excellent followup to her mega hit "Is That All There Is?"

  9. S.... ....

"'Well have a kid or maybe we'll rent one. He's got to be straight, we don't want a bent one.'" ... It was a different time, right?

The whole song is laced with irony. It sounds like a standard love song, but the relationship described is very conservative and boring. It's making fun of what people think a happily-ever-after relationship is. This is what Newman always does

    S.... ....

yeah i think you're not getting jokes.

  10. g.... ....

This album would have to be one of my top 20 to have on a desert island. Nilsson and Newman are a hard combination to beat.

  11. R.... F....

wow, gets ya right in the feels at the end...

  12. M.... C....

    Excellent...still love Ska I presume.

  13. N.... ....

    Zipster brought me here!

  14. Z.... ....

    This is fucking amazing!

  15. s.... ....

I think nilsson took newmans songs to a higher level. Great lp!!!

  16. f.... ....

sorry but Newman's original from 1968 > Nilsson cover. But Nilsson's alright, 8 in 10.

  17. D.... R....

Oh for Krissake guys! Music is always an interpretation - just like painting. There are no rules, and trying to impose your values, or whatever else you call subjectivity, on others in art-forms is ridiculous. It's not a machine. It doesn't have to work or be efficient or look "pretty." It's there to be presented then enjoyed if you like it. If you don't then just say so, and leave it at that.

  18. I.... I....

Oversung but underorchestrated. Original Newman's version is a lot better.

  19. g.... ....

@naughtyboymessiah I think maybe you had Newman in mind with your orginal comment, and you also have a point there. Sometimes Newman's quirky voice works on a song better than anyone else could do. A lot of people have done versions of "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", and many of those people are much better singers than he is, but the song just doesn't sound right with anyone else singing it.

  20. g.... ....

@naughtyboymessiah I don't see how it's true even subjectively. I agree that most of the time the original is better with recordings, but I can think of several people who took songs that were mediocre and made them much better with new arrangments. Even the members of Bad Finger admitted that Harry's own version of "Without You" was miles ahead of theirs. As one of them put it, "Harry took our little song and turned it into a movie"! I can think of several lackluster songs Elvis made better.

  21. g.... ....

    @naughtyboymessiah How?

  22. U.... M....

    Nope. Its shit

  23. J.... B....

this is a great song.. i like harrys voice.. but sonny & Cher did it better on their program with the accompanying john wilson cartoon

  24. J.... B....

This is a great song i love harry's voice.. Heard the original newman sucked on it.. but i will say sonny & Cher did it better when they had John Wilson do a cartoon for it.. which aired on the sonny & Cher show(comedy Hour)

  25. r.... ....

I presume you are all in the U.S.A.......i was 21 in 1975 and listenening to Ska and stuff, anyway i won a dancing contest and the D.J ( who was a tight bastard ) threw this album at me and it hit me on the head and he said " there take that you wanker as your first prize", bearing in mind that i was really into Ska tamla etc, he thought he had had a result. Nah! Best album I ever heard, still is!!!

    r.... ....

listen to Jack jones version the best
