Harry Nilsson - All I Think About Is You Lyrics

How can I run away from darkness
At the close of day
When all I think about is you?

Not knowing where I'm going
What am I to do
When all I think about is you?

I'll stand an hour knocking
Knowing that my heart is mocking me
She doesn't live here anymore

I don't know why I bother
What else can I do
When all I think about is you?

Dream maker, heartbreaker
How can dreams come true
When all I dream about is you?

I'll stand an hour knocking
Knowing that my heart is mocking me
She doesn't live here anymore

How can I run away from darkness
At the close of day
When all I think about is you?

Not knowing where I'm going
What am I to do
When all I think about is you?

I don't know why I bother
What else can I do
When all I think about is you?

  14. J.... d....

    ¡A Masterpiece!

One of that very few songs that are in other level, far far far away from the rest, in the sky, out of this world, between the stars with other songs like Nessun Dorma, Blade Runner Love song...

  28. J.... T....

Harry reminds me of a more romantic Leonard Cohen here. Two irreplaceable men.

    Great song.

  29. J.... S....

I must have heard a million songs ..but none of them even come close to how honest and beautiful this one is ...

    J.... S....

"honest" and "beautiful". What a GREAT way to describe Harry's music! He had integrity like nothing that came before or since by the way!!!! They just don't make them like this any longer!

    J.... S....

I think the same 😃 and is a pleasure to listen it from others.

I don't know how is not one of the ten best songs of all times for all. But many people don't know this Masterpiece.

  30. S.... ....

This is the song that makes me think of everquest.

She doesn't live here anymore reference to the days of raiding gorenaire
I also do think of everquest but its dead and the reason this song works is everquest was a thing of beauty back in the old days, now its old and its hanging on a thread and dying.

    S.... ....

@***** It doesn't matter. The reason it makes me think of everquest is because eq is old and dying and i think the loving feeling is there.

You wouldn't understand  but whatever if your going to troll don't answer.

    S.... ....

    Leave him alone he's fine

    S.... ....

    @*****
It demeans nothing.Songs can have personal meaning.I don't go around critizing you for having a song mean something to you in a different way.You can connect to songs different way, example:lets say your mother dies and a song reminds you of her, then that song will have that reminder of her for you.It doesn't matter what the songs about, it still has that emotional connection.

The reason you can't force me to have your set of experiences and such, is because experiences are personal.Everyone experiences things differently, so the song has  a meaning to you, but perhaps that is right or not it doesn't justify the slander towards me.

  31. R.... ....

Interesting video, with the four eyes.

  38. d.... f....

    what a great song, classic

  39. L.... M....

This has to be one of the most Romantic and Heartbreaking songs ever written, it haunts you, just a beautiful, beautiful song.

    L.... M....

    Linda Morgan I agree

  40. s.... ....

RCA promised to push this 45 and the GREAT LP. It was from. Harry got his voice in the best shape in years in '77 but Elvis died and RCA did zero for Harry. He resented it for years...Great song from a Great LP....

    s.... ....

My mistake..."Without You," was also a big hit for Harry. But that too...was written by Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tom Evans. (The coincidence here continues with the likes of Tim Hardin who wrote many great songs that were hits for others -- "If I Were a Carpenter," etc...in his career yet, his only hit was "Simple Song of Freedom," and that was written by Bobby Darin -- who was among the first to have hits with Hardin songs).

    s.... ....

John LaStrada Wrong...I ran a large record company in the 70's and everything from RCA was Elvis. No promo, limited supply for Nilsson's LP. We totally disagree on this one..

    s.... ....

I guess RCA ignored Jefferson Starship, John Denver, Bonnie Tyler, Dolly Parton, Hall & Oates and dozens of other top sellers during Elvis' death period. But no...their careers didn't falter and were ignored. They prospered, charted and performed during Elvis' untimely death. No, Harry Nilsson was an artist who didn't perform live for most of his career and he probably told RCA he wouldn't go out and support the album with a tour. That's a big reason to not throw a lot of PR weight behind an artist.

You worked in RCA PR -- then, you should know this saintcruzin. I worked PR for over ten years at ABC-Dunhill, and my associate was VP of PR at Atlantic Records. We are familiar with its workings. No CORPORATION throws all its efforts behind one performer. Those other artists are an investment and as a company we have to protect that investment. Nilsson was squeezed out at best because the record got preliminary poor reviews, he wouldn't tour behind the album and knowing Harry's personality he probably gave them a hard time. Harry was also still recuperating from bad press he got with John Lennon in LA and his last two albums were relative failures. RCA -- and you should know this -- considered dropping him. John Lennon intervened and saved his contract. Part of what you say is true that much of the RCA PR turned their attention to Elvis' death, but if none of those other artists suffered from it, or even complained about it, then I would have to say that it's sour grapes on the part of Harry. What I cited as some of the reasons for RCA to step back. That decision would have to come from high up in the tower of RCA corporate and not the PR people. Neglecting an artist intentionally would hardly be approved by accounting. (However, Harry may not have been a priority -- I wouldn't put it past RCA to have made this move to stimulate Harry to leave them and they would not be in breach of contract). Harry's work after leaving RCA was hardly the work he had produced earlier. But I will admit, I did see some PR on this album back when it was released -- that's how I knew the LP existed. Maybe Harry was expecting a multi-million dollar press campaign? Was angry about the attention Elvis in death was getting. But you could hardly compare the sales of Elvis records with Harry. You can totally disagree, but you are not coming clean 100% -- if RCA operated its rock division the way you describe they deserved to not sell anything. RCA top selling artists like Perry Como wasn't exactly selling records like he did in the 60's. So they couldn't depend on him. Sadly, it was Harry's lack of cooperation to promote his own career that was the reason he didn't get wider promotion on his album.

    s.... ....

Some interesting insights into the inner workings of record label PR departments here, John. I have to disagree about "Sandman", though. I love that nutty album. What you hear as poor song selection was, I think, Harry no longer caring about putting his most commercial foot forward, and just following the muse wherever it led him. I guess I hear refreshing honesty where some hear self-sabotage.

Any album that offers the catchiest song ever written about the end of the world ("Pretty Soon There'll Be Nothing Left for Everybody"), a jazzy number that finds a way to slip in the word "surreptitiously" while Harry works out his rougher post-"Pussy Cats" voice to great effect ("Here's Why I Did Not Go to Work Today"), barbershop quartet with fascinating lyrics and some gorgeous singing ("The Ivy Covered Walls"), and two of Harry's all-time best ballads ("Something True" and "Will She Miss Me?"), and still finds a way to squeeze in a tango with Marlon Brando and advice for other songwriters, is pretty nifty by me.

It's schizophrenic, sure. But I'll take Harry going off the rails over homogenous one-note modern pop any day. Even the songs that are almost universally written off as self-indulgent, like "The Flying Saucer Song", can be fun in the right frame of mind. If you think about it, it's kind of Harry poking fun at his own drunken persona. He's playing all the characters, so he's having a conversation with himself in a bar. Eventually he gets kicked out. By himself. And all the while, Joe Cocker is screaming in the background like he's losing his mind, apropos of nothing. It cracks me up.

Gotta disagree about this album here, too. It's home to some of Harry's very best late-period singing, and at the very least "Perfect Day" deserves to be held in the same high esteem as "All I Think About Is You".

But that's just me. If we all heard everything the same way, it'd get pretty boring after a while. :)

    s.... ....

I could agree with everything you said bonepaper and thank you for being civil and sharing a nice personal recollection about the albums. I was staying within the confines of business not so much what I thought of the albums personally. "Something True," "Perfect Day," -- all the others you mentioned, all good. But, Harry wasn't doing the brisk business he did when he released his hits and quirky albums like Nilsson Schmillson." I liked almost everything Harry did. But, an entire album of "All I Think About Is You," quality songs would have thrilled me. He could have done it. I enjoyed reading your post -- you said many things that are agreeable. My post is not meant to criticize Harry as is to attempt to explain why his albums fell off for a time. And we all know already that he was an alcoholic and I guess that's why many of those later albums became spotty. Harry was a lot like Tom Waits in that he "invented" his own genre and we expected a Nilsson song most of the time. The very best for me were on those two Nilsson Schmilsson," "Son of Schmilsson" albums which I wore out. I always thought they were as good as any Beatle album (and some Beatles were actually on the albums in name-disguise, Richie Snare was Ringo Starr.) Those two LP's (I am showing my age) were masterpieces. Thanks for writing bonepaper.

This was one of a last few songs to be played as the 'last record' before the shut down for the night on pennine radio 235 (long before 24 hour radio) The station had about a dozen recordings picked out for this mellow sound - other artists picked for this spot were steely dan & elkie brookes .
Then when 235 went dead at midnight I would tune into radio Luxemburg 208 - I would listen in bed under the covers - Wearing my trusty ear phones to the radio in the dark - supposedly getting some sleep before school the following day !
Thankyou for sharing that beautiful song! ...
...And reminding me how old I am!!! that was from 38 years ago - Oh dear ! I'm off for acuppa & a lay down !

    S.... B....

  54. h.... ....

I'm just now discovering Harry after all these years...this video is great! Love the song and Harry's sense of humor is hilarious! I wish more artists would take themselves less seriously, as Harry did.

  55. s.... ....

My favourite Nilssohn song, just beautiful. But what a shit video, what was he thinking?

    s.... ....

@shaunoverspill He's being a goof ball and not even taking a song as good as this too seriously. Cuz he's awesome.

  56. H.... ....

Everyone should come here to do their breakup moping.

  57. d.... f....

It's the eyes that do it for me

ABSOLUTE FUCKING GENIUS! I would have given my left nut to have known this guy. Everything he has done is magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. 7.... ....

Those Four Eyes see into all angles of all souls out there.

  62. j.... s....

Harry Nilsson was a magic existential artist whose force of creativity was in his own vision of being humble in a industry that was driven by cheap and wasted glamour that today really has hurt it too much and put it into stupid predicament

  63. M.... ....

Amazing artist. You cant peghole sings all styles john and paul revered him.

  64. t.... ....

This video underlines the possibility that, although this is a gorgeous song, the man narrating it is on the verge of losing his mind.

    t.... ....

bit melodramaTIc, noT suRe if u are discussinG the actual video or harry himself, he was very self aware, wasnt one to make a precious well developed music vid, just a lil goof and spoof because that was supposedly always in his nature., he was fine.

  65. W.... E....

Ol' Blue Eyes himself should've recorded a version.

    W.... E....

    You are insane.

  66. D.... H....

If you've ever loved this song penetrates the soul awesome tune

  67. R.... S....

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY FROM BEGGING TO END HARRY IS SADLY MISSED BY MILLIONS OF MUSIC LOVERS WORLD WIDE!!! THANK GOD FOR NILSSON!!!!

  68. J.... K....

Wonderful song but then this is just one of many wonderful songs written and performed by Harry. Wish he was still with us ;)

  69. 7.... ....

Is this a killer David Bowie Song from the Berlin Trilogy ?? Nahh,..... it's just another awesome track from Nilsson ,......

  70. s.... ....

Harry got his voice into very good shape for this LP. 80% of what it was but still great. A baritone here not the tenor before Pussycats. Too bad the label broke their promise to Harry and devoted all the money and energy into Elvis, who had just died. One of Harry's best LPs.

  71. D.... L....

My very favourite Harry Nilsson son ever!!

  72. M.... ....

This was wonderful. It kind of sums up Harry in a way. So good and beautiful and yet so very very strange and weird.

  73. N.... D....

This is kind of funny. The cover of Knnillssonn makes a lot more sense now. =)

  74. I.... r....

I think Harry is showing his dreaming inner spirit through the second set of eyes.

  75. G.... G....

I was thinking.. What other classic could Harry have put on the live recording "A Little Touch of Schmillson In The Night".. My pick- "If I Loved You" from "Carousel" ... Any other ideas??

  76. a.... r....

you could well be right there Mr Picco.Gives me the shivers everytime.

  77. S.... ....

Never knew this existed myself. I had this and other albums of Harry's when i was a kid. Thank you for the upload x

  78. r.... ....

This is a fantastic music video

  79. v.... ....

All I think about is you, Harry.

  80. c.... ....

    wtf did i just watch

  81. N.... ....

He's shifting his eyes to his own bass line. Seriously, no one is cooler than this guy.

  82. N.... ....

I'm still trying to figure out if this is the best song I've ever heard.

  83. P.... R....

  87. G.... ....

Ken Bruce (BBC Radio 2) occasionally played this as the 'Love Song'. I haven't heard it lately though.

  88. C.... M....

Again: sublime...They don't really make them like dear harry. may he rest in peace.

  89. h.... ....

amazing, right? i thought this song was going to be "modern" like most of the Monkey Dust soundtrack - but 1977? genius.

  90. K.... ....

    can relate......................................

  91. t.... ....

you r so right pistol everyone no matter what age would love this beautiful

  92. G.... ....

Dear, dear Harry Nilsson. This song got me into his music by accident. I thought he was Elton John's drummer, being a lazy 16-year-old - that was Nigel Olsson! This song came on the radio as I was sleeping off a night's camping (no sleep), and its eerie, dreamlike qualities made a very deep impression. The b-side, Old Bones, is just as haunting.

Typical Nilsson to use humour in the video for such a melancholy song. :)

  93. i.... ....

I love seeing film I never knew existed !!!

  94. B.... ....

Jesus I never knew there was a video for this! Well done on posting this!

  95. l.... ....

Not sure of Harrys intentions behind this video ..his voice , this song , the haunting orchestral score with the boys choir doesn't need any gimmicks but Harry wasn't your ordinary artist ...art and beauty are more apt .Thanks

  96. g.... ....

a unique genius...got to love that mesmerizing voice...a forever sound

  97. G.... ....

Excellent without a shadow of doubt. One of my favourite songs of all time too and one of the very best as well.

  98. h.... ....

This is one of my favorite Nilsson songs ever, maybe even one of my favorite songs ever. And the video, which I never knew existed, is actually equally great!! Thanks for uploading, any idea who directed this? I'm guessing it could be Klaus Voorman, who did the Knilsson cover (with the same visual concept).

  99. B.... E....

Always glad to see Harry. Thank you so much for the posting of this gem. Miss ya Harry!

  100. S.... ....

great to see the original videa, thanks for posting...... :)
