Harry Nilsson - 1941 Lyrics

Well in 1941 a happy father had a son
And by 1944 the father walked right out the door
And in '45 the mom and son were still alive
But who could tell in '46 if the two were to survive
Well the years were passing quickly
But not fast enough for him
So he closed his eyes through '55
And he opened them up again
When he looked around he saw a clown
And the clown seemed very gay
And he set that night to join that circus clown and run away
[Scat solo]
Well he followed every railroad track
And every highway sign
And he had a girl in each new town
And the towns he left behind
And the open road
Was the only road he knew
But the color of his dreams
Were slowly turning into blue
Then he met a girl the kind of girl
He'd wanted all his life
She was soft and kind and good to him
So he took her for his wife
And they got a house not far from town
And in a little while
The girl had seen the doctor
And she came home with a smile
Now in 1961 a happy father had a son
And by 1964 the father walked right out the door
And in '65 the mom and son were still around
But what will happen to the boy
When the circus comes to town?
[Scat solo]

And he said, I'd like to join that circus clown and run away"

It's almost criminal that Harry never truly received public acclaim as many others with far less talent did. Harry was one of those 'Musician's musician'. He influenced even the greatest in the world of music (Beatles for example idolized him). His range of ironic to the humorous & romance to the iconic was beyond the reaches of many who 'achieved' public notoriety.

It was REALLY hard to track this down. I only remembered "Mom and son were still alive" and "what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town", and neither of those has anything to do with the title! Did someone else do a cover of this?

    f.... ....

I tried tracking this down the same way! I remember it from Top 40 back in the 1960s. I've looked for it for years and just found it in the Harry Nilsson bio video.

All you need do is google "song lyrics what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town" and you will find it right away. Usually works for any line which is not too common.

  10. m.... ....

    very fucked up song

  11. f.... ....

WOW amazing song!!!! Listen also to : EARLY IN THE MORNING......

  12. V.... P....

Very Beatle-esque. No wonder the actual Beatles took to him, and worked with him.

    V.... P....

Yes, all the lyricism and melodic & harmonic spirit of Sgt Pepper is right here in this song...

    V.... P....

    the Beatles were Nilsson-esque too.

  13. A.... M....

oooh i love this song. 😄. its my favorite one by Harry Nilson.

    A.... M....

    Nilsson. Two 's'es.'

    A.... M....

Wow. Someone with a single favorite. try 'mr. Richards favorite song', or 'who done it', 'laughin man'. wow, so many to choose, so little time.

  14. t.... ....

The Acoustic version is way better..... Incredible

    t.... ....

They're both great. This one has incredible scat singing, specially that ending, but the live version (the BBC one) seems more introspective.

  15. D.... J....

Tony, Harry wrote 'I Guess the Lord....'.

    D.... J....

I love that song so much!!!

  16. T.... ....

    Are you in 7th grade?

  17. T.... G....

I just saw your comment. I did not say his best songs were written by others, only that the songs which performed better on the charts. Personally I love Pandemonium Shadow Show, it is of a piece with Sgt. Pepper.

  18. S.... ....

I agree. I feel that the stark beauty of Nilsson's voice, with just guitar accompaniment, gives his songs more gravity than larger scale productions with lots of bells and whistles overshadowing the lyrics.

  19. T.... G....

Yes, seriously. No less than the Beatles' manager, Derek Taylor, requested more than 1000 copies of Pandemonium Shadow Show to give out to friends. John and Paul loved the album and briefly considered having Harry join the Beatles. As for his covering of others' songs, consider the version of One on this album was a big hit for Three Dog Night.

  20. o.... ....

That's a matter of opinion and most of us don't agree.

  21. o.... ....

    Seriously?

  22. B.... H....

This song was the "A"-side of a 45 - recorded by Canadian Tom Northcott.

  23. T.... G....

Harry was a remarkable songwriter and singer, yet his biggest hits were actually written by other people (Pete Ham of Badfinger, Fred Neil who wrote "Everybody's Talkin' At Me," Randy Newman and "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City."

  24. T.... G....

Probably the single greatest clone of Sgt. Pepper, which is probably why the Beatles loved Harry. He "got" them, and they him.

  25. G.... v....

    Epic..

  26. p.... ....

Check out the killer doco, who is harry nilsson ?

  27. p.... ....

    Live versions better,

  28. m.... ....

    I love that one too.

  29. s.... ....

I like the live version he did on The Smothers Brothers show (I think)better, Just him and his guitar.

  30. C.... ....

Did you not listen to the song? In the song he repeats exactly what happened in 1941!

  31. N.... A....

    no ofence
    but i'm not impressed
i'll listen to it more...sometimes does work.

  32. l.... ....

Mika told me to watch this and I don't regret it!

  33. R.... ....

not to offend anyone but in my opinion Nilsson was way better that the beatles

  34. g.... ....

    well written song. love it

  35. N.... ....

    Sad and great.

  36. K.... G....

@SonofMrPeanut I am watching it now!!! I never heard the 1941 song before, so I came on youtube to look it up. I became a fan of Nilsson after hearing a song he did with John Lennon "Mucho Mungo"/Mt. Elga

  37. C.... P....

@howlinman801 For anybody who has a Netflix subscription, it's available to view on Instant Queue. There's really no excuse.

  38. h.... ....

Nilsson's voice is so soothing to me ears. If you haven't already you should really watch the documentary "Who is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everyone Talking About Him?" It's quite touching :)

  39. C.... P....

@Dominogray The circus bit could've used elements of Mr. Kite.

I could certainly imagine the words being written by Lennon.

  40. O.... ....

Man, it is amazing how many songs that Nilsson made that I've really enjoyed, and yet never knew who he was til now....just watched the doc, "Who is Harry Nilsson?"...awesome, eccentric artist....

  41. D.... B....

    thanks!

  42. b.... b....
