Harry Chapin - Vacancy Lyrics

Mrs. Smith and Mr. Jones have come to pass the night
They pulled off of the highway when they saw my light
It's a vacancy I offer them, what they offer me
Is fullness for a lifetime that's bare as can be

There's a vacancy, won't you come to me
And fill my empty spaces
I'm a motel man in a promised land
That's filled with empty faces
So won't you bring your sorrows bring your dreams,
It's a place for you to be
There's no more tomorrow or that's how it seems
Won't you come to me? I've got a vacancy

Another name, another key, another pass to glory
Another night, another sight, another bedtime story
Another stage, another chance, for gentleness or violence
Another birth, another dance, another death in silence

There's a vacancy, won't you come to me
And fill my empty spaces
I'm a motel man in a promised land
That's filled with empty faces
So won't you bring your sorrows bring your dreams,
It's a place for you to be
There's no more tomorrow or that's how it seems
Won't you come to me? I've got a vacancy

Mr. John is coming on with his liason
Mr. Soft is comin' off and soon he'll be gone
Mrs. Hart has come apart now that she's alone
Mr. Jive has come alive but nobody's home

Mornings come checkout time, with my pail and broom
I find what they've left behind in every tell-tale room
The sheets show their struggles, the glasses their fears
The ashtrays the hours passed, the towels their tears

There's a vacancy, won't you come to me
And fill my empty spaces
I'm a motel man in a promised land
That's filled with empty faces
So won't you bring your sorrows bring your dreams,
It's a place for you to be
There's no more tomorrow or that's how it seems
Won't you come to me? I've got a vacancy

Harry Chapin Vacancy Comments
  1. Noah Bravo

That one person that disliked this has issues

  2. Peter Knight

Would have fit perfectly as the theme for "Psycho".

  3. Terry R. Wolf

Harry must have had an adult diaper! He played Fairbanks, Ak. in '78 for 2 1/2 hours-played, brought band/kid in, excused them and played some more. Not doing drugs ever, it was the highest I have ever been. Greyhound is my favorite all time song that I still don't fully understand but catch myself living that life of a future, unrealistic, hope and not living for today. I think Vacancy describes how people come into our lives for short times and can leave their sorrows, hopes and fears with us after they leave. A good song can never be totally understood.

Hard not to think about Norman Bates. Harry did write songs about some very crazy people and I think that's how I came to Norman Bates.

  5. John Gallagher

I just heard it and it's as great as it was when it first came out.

    I miss him.

  7. Noah Spierings

Harry has been by far one of the most poetic, beautiful, and understanding people that I have ever known. Such a great and supportive artist who is lost on many.

Actually it was in his own car. He lost control of it and had a heart attack. He may have had it before the accident

I recently started working at a hotel in the French Quarter in New Orleans and, as I mostly work alone, I sing this song while I'm working.

the story is the word, ballads, always was a softy for ballads as I understand them
campfire or fireplace stories set to music, what the hell do I know ?

  12. stillerfan69

I am staying, will listen twice, perhaps thrice in a row

  13. AstroBastard

when i listen to the song i think about filling the empty part of the heart

Harry must have visualized a clerk with a 24 hr on call job sacraficing a chunk of his life while saving for the future. Anyone who bartended saw the people change from hour to hour as they start feelin good to happy to drunk to loaded to totaled. I always asked myself before work; "what's gonna happen tonite?" As "with the pail and broom", the soiled room tells the cleaner an imaginative explaination fueled by deduction, and possible wonder of his future life. Harry loved to study all peoples.

Hard to tell since songs can mean many things. All I can think of is the person portrayed in the song is helping people with struggles. Good song like many from an artist who should of had many more hits, who's music should of gotten more airplay, and not to have his life taken from us so soon. I also put Karen Carpenter in the same thing too.

  16. jtc1148

Very underrated album, song and artist.
