I sing this to my 10 month old grandson when I hold him trying to get him to sleep. It works like magic!

I think "Belafonte" was the first album I ever bought. "Sylvie", "Matilda" and "Scarlet Ribbons" (my favorite) were why I bought it.

I just love this song, love it as a child and sing it now to my grandchildren, when I'm thirsty! Enjoy!

Heard this while painting my kitchen. Thought it was Paolo Nutini. Amazing. But cannot find the album this version is from. It is just so good.

Album is out of print and not issued as disc. Someone below mentions its on the Calypso album....try ebay!

Our entire football team would sing this, gasping, as we ran laps on hot August afternoons. Mr. Belafonte's version sounded so much better than our strangled imitation, but he kept us going right up to our collapse.

Someone's always "crying tears of joy" on these oldie threads. My hunch is you're some kind of youtube plant. (I could be wrong. But I doubt it.) I mean, really, what..you cry "tears of joy" whenever you hear your name somewhere? If so, I suggest you seek help, if you haven't already. You've got a problem.

My daughter's name is Sylvie....she's the cutest 8 year old there is.

Another car guy whose dad used to play and sing with the Carnegie Hall double album. Dad's 80 now, and using a walker. But I remember falling asleep under the car with him when we were changing the torque converter for the next race.

My dad Was a great fun! I learned it when i Was a little child, together with Matilda! Sweet memories!!!

My sister named her cat Sylvie because of this song! :)

Yes, there were many tv shows with dear Harry, but taping them was not always standard in the 50's. Many 60's shows were not taped, either. You have given me a search mission. Thanks!
