Harry Belafonte - Sylvie Lyrics

Sylvie
Sylvie
I'm so hot'n dry
Sylvie
Sylvie
Can't you hear,
Can't you hear me crying?

Bring me little water, Sylvie
Bring me little water out
Bring me little water, Sylvie
Every little once in a while

Sylvie says she loves me
But I believe she lies
She hasn't been to see me
Since the last day in july

Sylvie
Sylvie
I'm so hot'n dry
Sylvie
Sylvie
Can't you hear
Can't you hear me crying

Bring me little water, Sylvie
Bring me little water out
Bring me little water, Sylvie
Every little once in a while

She brought me a little coffee
She brought me a little tea
Well, she brought me nearly every damned thing
But she didn't bring the jailhouse key

Sylvie
Sylvie
I'm so hot'n dry
Sylvie
Sylvie
Little drink of water
Wouldn't statisfy me

Bring me little water, Sylvie
Bring me little water out
Bring me little water, Sylvie
Every little once in a while

Took a look ayonder
What is that I see?
Well I thought it was little Sylvie
Hopprunning there for me

Sylvie
Sylvie
I'm so hot and dry
Sylvie
Sylvie
Can't you hear
Can't you hear me crying?

Bring me little water, Sylvie
Bring me little water out
Bring me little water, Sylvie
Every little once in a while
Every little once in a while
Every
Little once
In a while

Sylvie
Sylvie

Do a lil research ... this man; being, is trying to tell us something ... life is worth living ... I am the proof!

  2. J.... G....

    Tis beautiful period

The very first song I ever remember hearing, ever. Shaped my idea of music - soft, rhythmic, soulful - ever after.

And what wouldn't you give for a tape of THIS: "The first time he appeared in front of an audience, he was backed by the Charlie Parker band, which included Charlie Parker himself, Max Roach and Miles Davis, among others." (Wikipedia)

  4. J.... G....

WONDERFUL; SIMPLY WONDERFUL. WHAT A TALENT.

I sing this to my 10 month old grandson when I hold him trying to get him to sleep. It works like magic!

I think "Belafonte" was the first album I ever bought. "Sylvie", "Matilda" and "Scarlet Ribbons" (my favorite) were why I bought it.

    B.... T....

Twas definitely one of my favorites

  11. s.... ....

I believe this was on Belafontes "Calypso" album.

    Black Music Month "CELEBRATE"
I just love this song, love it as a child and sing it now to my grandchildren, when I'm thirsty! Enjoy!

Heard this while painting my kitchen. Thought it was Paolo Nutini. Amazing. But cannot find the album this version is from. It is just so good.

    J.... R....

Album is out of print and not issued as disc. Someone below mentions its on the Calypso album....try ebay!

  14. c.... ....

    Great story!

Our entire football team would sing this, gasping, as we ran laps on hot August afternoons. Mr. Belafonte's version sounded so much better than our strangled imitation, but he kept us going right up to our collapse.

my name is sylvie im crying of tears r joy hes singing about me

    C.... W....

Someone's always "crying tears of joy" on these oldie threads. My hunch is you're some kind of youtube plant. (I could be wrong. But I doubt it.) I mean, really, what..you cry "tears of joy" whenever you hear your name somewhere? If so, I suggest you seek help, if you haven't already. You've got a problem.

  18. F.... L....

    Is MOJO a magazine???

    F.... L....

A music mag, Tom Waits did a CD playlist for them and it was the best music compilation ever.

  19. M.... ....

My daughter's name is Sylvie....she's the cutest 8 year old there is.

  20. C.... ....

Another car guy whose dad used to play and sing with the Carnegie Hall double album. Dad's 80 now, and using a walker. But I remember falling asleep under the car with him when we were changing the torque converter for the next race.

  21. A.... P....

My dad Was a great fun! I learned it when i Was a little child, together with Matilda! Sweet memories!!!

  22. T.... ....

My sister named her cat Sylvie because of this song! :)

Yes, there were many tv shows with dear Harry, but taping them was not always standard in the 50's. Many 60's shows were not taped, either. You have given me a search mission. Thanks!

  32. c.... ....

I will do some looking...hope I can find it, but don't hold your breath. So much was never recorded or filmed.

  33. c.... ....

    Me too. Thanks for listening.
