Harris, Emmylou - Ballad Of Sally Rose Lyrics
Her mama picked him up in south Minnesota
He promised her the world but they never got that far
For he was last seen in that '59 DeSota
When Sally was born in the black hills of Dakota
Raised with a proud but a wandering heart
And she knew that her roots were in the old reservation
But she had stars in her eyes and graeter expectations
No rings on her fingers no bells on het toes
With bugs on her headlights
And runs in her hose
Through the valley of the shadow of Roosevelt's nose
Adios, South Dakota, adios Sally Rose
On the side of a mountain where her forefathers roamed
Playing cowboys and Indians right under the nose
Of Theodore Roosevelt and the sweet Sally Rose
So she left Rapid City in the blue moonlight hour
With her eye on the highway and her foot on the floor
And turnin' the dial she was pulled by the power
Of the word coming out of that broadcasting tower

Just in case there's more out there whose high frequency hearing is as shot to hell as mine, here are the words to this magnificent song:
Her mama picked him up in south Minnesota
He promised her the world but they never got that far
For he was last seen in that '59 DeSota
When Sally was born in the black hills of Dakota
She was washed in the blood of the dying Sioux nation
Raised with a proud but a wandering heart
And she knew that her roots were in the old reservation
But she had stars in her eyes and graeter expectations
No rings on her fingers no bells on het toes
With bugs on her headlights
And runs in her hose
Through the valley of the shadow of Roosevelt's nose
Adios, South Dakota, adios Sally Rose
They've got a national monument carved out of stone
On the side of a mountain where her forefathers roamed
Playing cowboys and Indians right under the nose
Of Theodore Roosevelt and the sweet Sally Rose
So she left Rapid City in the blue moonlight hour
With her eye on the highway and her foot on the floor
And turnin' the dial she was pulled by the power
Of the word coming out of that broadcasting tower
Thank you for publishing the words of this beatiful song. Now I understand the message of this song aswell !
rebsarge so what’s the problem with your “high frequency hearing”
In today’s world most damage to hearing comes in the low fréquence range - longer wave frequencies are much more dangerous than high frequency waves
Besides being world class this lady has fab taste in guitars.

which national are you watching this video ?
The whole album crushes it. One of her best, if not THE best, from Emmylou.
Can anyone explain the story of the song, please? In a most possible simple way?? My daughters like the flow of the song so much, they always asked me to explain it,but I find it a little bit difficult...,please anyone??
It is a concept album, loosely based on Harris' relationship with Gram Parsons. The album tells the story of a character named Sally Rose, a singer whose lover and mentor, a hard-living, hard-drinking musician, is killed while on the road.
@chassie duckworth Those words certainly describe Gram Parsons, along with humorous and kind, according to Emmylou.
She's a Lady
Incredible talent
Beautiful!
Dear Emmylou my best singers/I just love your songs'your voice - my best singers gers
A masterpiece! Emmylou Harris is one of the greatest song writers of all time!
What an amazingly talented songwriter and musician. She puts her heart and soul into every song she performs. I love her wistful and forlorn voice. Emmylou - you are the elder stateswoman of country music.
Anthology....

This was your best album. I have yet to find a song I have not Loved by you. Your voice is the most beautiful, gentle and soothing I have ever known.
The Best of the Best From the one and only Emmylou Harris

j adore
What a great album. Some people have accused me of playing it for days. Yes!!! It's really that good. If you don't take a listen, you're selling yourself short. She really lays her sole bare.

To all women, try to learn to sing like Emmylou Harris then do your best to try and be as beautiful. The Genes
Un mot, Magnifique!!!
Very underrated concept album.
To take nothing away from her talent .....What a beaut. of a woman!
most incredable voice I have ever heard. best albumn I have ever heard.
Terry Mon amore
This is but the first song of what I consider her best album ever. It is the album that made me discover her. In two ways ;
1° I had never heard of her before when I borrowed the vinyl at the municipal library, and
2° does she speak of Sally Rose or ...of herself in these songs? The 14 songs are not randomly picked but follow the chronological unfolding of a story. Whose story? Emmylou admits it is autobiographical.
The words of some of these songs are extremely deep, highly spiritual :
"As each long day rolls by and falls behind me
In the loneliness there's a peacefulness I find
Though I'm weary even then
When I rise to start again
There'll be a diamond, a diamond in my crown.
...I'll shall not disavow all these ties that bind me now
They'll be a diamond, a diamond in my crown
...the sorrows that I have known, I'll see them all be overthrown
They'll be a diamond, a diamond in my crown
Through the passing of the years I will grow stronger
Just as sure as this old world keeps spinnin' round
And the closer I will be to my sweetest victory
There'll be a diamond in my crown
(in "Diamond in my crown")
In a moment of deep distress that I lived, such lyrics were a motivator for me to hit the road again. Because the distress not directly expressed but so vividly implied in the first part of the album is followed by such a firm determination to live, to live fully, to live a useful life. And whatever one may go through, if one keeps on toward one's goal, the end will be an apotheosis, as expressed in the conclusion of this magnificent album :
"Oh my children
Sorrow shall come to each of us
All our triumphs will soon lay buried in the dust
Long forgotten...
But when the silver turns to rust
Love is found when the heart is lost."
For me, this album is THE masterpiece of country/western music.
it is an allegory of her relationship with Gram Parsons.
I know it starts with that. But it goes far far far beyond that!
She is exploring her own Native heritage?
Tahititouto
this supersong and superwoman nice song I LOVE SALLY ROSE .Emmy, and your nice voice ....
Love you

Superb !
One of Emmylou's most wonderful songs! R. Ford-Williams, Grove City, Ohio
I find all her songs so beautiful, she is a real good singer, and she is still a beautiful woman.
Likewise.. All of her songs even cover are beautiful..her voice is wonderful.
This is the most underrated album I have ever heard. It oozes personal passion and each song is so well written and makes up a tragic story based on her relationship with Gram Parsons. Emmylou also cannot understand why it is ignored so much. Spread the word.
Oh my God, Emmylou touched my soul again! Teddy's nose and her angelic voice, what a combination on this earth. Let's go to South Dakota and cry out loudly: "Miss Harris, I love you forever!"
I know this album was a financial and critical flop but I think it is one of the greatest concept albums ever produced. Amazing songs, sung beautifully with brilliant musicians.
Ian James Batki
Only financial flop, because of her huge ambitious concert tour. Critical sucess.
I'm an old Emmylou fan, i have lots of Vinyl, tapes and CD's by this woman.. I've seen her 3 times in concert, Hope she comes back to Boise, i'll try to be in the front row if she does
I'm from South Dakota!!! Beat THAT!!
My girlfriend is called sally rose!!!
BEAT THAT!!!
i have this album,Warner bros #25205-1 in ex cond.signed by Emmylow.it says"to Sherri,Happy trails,Emmylow Harris"...
Billy Hale I just sold all my music. It killed me. I had this album and it said the same thing. To me. I wonder if you know have it.
...I think I just "liked'everyone's comment :D An INCREDIBLE album.Listened to this 4 times in the dark straight, and was busted up each time :D This woman's an ANGEL.Why did I take so long to discover her?
The whole story is on the CD,,,,Awesome!
Don't stop now . I have always loved her sound, her writings, her bands and , of course, her. My heart is broken over Linda and I thank God everyday I have most of her music. And Dolly, also. I have found very enjoyable music coming from Joey and Rory Feek. Joey passed away over a year ago. She was only 40 yrs. old and was a major talent in just about everything. I've not really recovered from it...don't know if I ever will. There is also a young man named Mo Pitney you should listen to. I think he has great potential [and his sister also. Good listening everyone. Religion has played a great role in these peoples' lives and I appreciate ever more so.

Through the valley of the shadow of Roosevelt's nose . .
What a great line.
One of Emmylou's finest! Heartfelt from one who came from nothing, about one who came from nothing. Next to my sweet wife, my lifelong heartthrob, the voice of an angel, and a story with personal significance for me.
