Hansard, Glen - On Love Lyrics

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though he hides a sword among them.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams

Love will crown and crucify you.
Love for your growth so he is for your pruning.
Love will caresses your tenderest branches
And shake every clinging root.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes and sifts you he grinds until he kneads you
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
That you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you
That you may know the secrets of your heart,
And in that knowledge become a fragment
A fragment of Life's heart.

Now if in your fear you seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Better cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into a seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all your laughter,
And weep, and weep but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is enough.

You should say, "I am in the heart of God."
You cannot direct the course of love,
For love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart
To come home in the evening with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart
And a song of praise on your lips.

    Love will crown and crucify..

    Unless one has been in 'love' one will not understand these words..
    The transcendental quality of the words is where the timelessness and universality of this song applies.

    Thank you

    Dear Lover,

    I do not need you to be anything,
    Other than a human man on the pilgrimage path,
    For love, and embracing all that emerges.
    I do not expect you to be the Savior on a white horse,
    Or the spiritual messiah of conscious relationship,
    I know who you are, and I am here with you.
    Let us walk together in the crucible of wounds,
    Where dark nights are lit by the stars of our love.
    I look inside my womb-eye through time,
    I see you have been many things –
    King, Priest, Prophet,
    Warrior, Scholar, Scientist,
    Pioneer, Provider, Protector,
    Even a ‘God’ at times….
    Let us lay these heavy robes down….
    And enter the Garden of Eden within,
    Where we can meet in innocence, you and I,
    Man and woman, naked, humbled in ecstasy,
    Where Lover’s eyes are Magic Doorways.
    I invite you into my holy chamber…
    There is wine and succor here,
    And space for your needs, your weakness, your grief…
    I have a sacred fire where your anger and pain can burn,
    I know you worry, and I have no words,
    Only the soft prayers of my touch.
    When we lay, skin by skin, breathing
    I feel something greater breathing us
    In the darkness -
    A Womb of Love,
    That holds us together,
    Even when we have forgotten how to hold ourselves,
    And each other.
    I will meet you here,
    In this sacred place
    Where the two become One~

    I understand the meaning to this song but I just can't bring myself to trust someone else with my heart I've never had my heart broken before but I'm just trying to avoid that

    K.... T....

    Kiara Thompson The poem is an uplifting message that says we should give all of ourselves to love when it calls us. Do not worry if you haven't felt the deep call to love someone yet, but if you have felt love and chose to run away from it the poem says that life will be less fulfilling and more empty. Because love is bigger than ourselves. It's a selfless virtue that shows the best of humankind in its pure form. Yes, love is harsh and steep. It will make you cry. But a world without love is like a gray world without seasons that would leave us cold and bitter to both beauty and God.

    I hope you let go of those fears and live a joyful life filled with love of many.

    K.... T....

    My dear... the kind of love that is "captured" in this masterpiece is not limited to romantic love (love between two person). It's the love that's bigger and vast and full.... It's the love that pushes you to become greater than anything you can imagine...so please do not limit it... i sincerely hope that you will experience the kind of love that this poem points to :)

    K.... T....

    Kiara Thompson I wish all comment sections were as good as this :)

    K.... T....

    You reminded me of a quote from CSLewis' book "The Four Loves";
    "To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."

    K.... T....

    Than you will laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

    You have this life. It might be our only one. You do your soul a grevious disservice if you hide your heart in fear. Read the book, and meditate on his teachings.

    Quando l'amore vi fa cenno, seguitelo,
    Benché le sue strade siano aspre e scoscese.
    E quando le sue ali vi avvolgono, abbandonatevi a lui,
    Benché la spada che nasconde tra le penne possa ferirvi.
    E quando vi parla, credetegli,
    Anche se la sua voce può mandare in frantumi i vostri sogni come il vento del nord lascia spoglio il giardino.

    Perché come l'amore v'incorona così vi crocifigge. E come per voi è maturazione, così è anche potatura.
    E come ascende alla vostra cima e accarezza i rami più teneri che fremono al sole,
    Così discenderà alle vostre radici che scuoterà dove si aggrappano con più forza alla terra.
    Come fastelli di grano, vi raccoglierà.
    Vi batterà per denudarvi.
    Vi passerà al crivello per liberarvi dalla pula.
    Vi macinerà fino a farvi farina.
    Vi impasterà fino a rendervi malleabili.
    E poi vi assegnerà al suo fuoco sacro, perché possiate diventare il pane sacro per il banchetto divino.

    Tutto questo farà in voi l'amore, affinché conosciate i segreti del cuore, e in quella conoscenza diventiate un frammento del cuore della Vita.
    Ma se avrete paura, e cercherete soltanto la pace dell'amore ed il piacere dell'amore,
    Allora è meglio che copriate le vostre nudità, e passiate lontano dall'aia dell'amore,
    Nel mondo senza stagioni dove potrete ridere, ma non tutto il vostro riso, e piangere, ma non tutto il vostro pianto.

    L'amore non dà nulla oltre se stesso e non prende nulla se non da se stesso.
    L'amore non possiede né vuol essere posseduto,
    Perché l'amore basta all'amore.
    Quando amate non dovreste dire: "Dio è nel mio cuore" ma, semmai, "sono nel cuore di Dio".
    E non crediate di guidare il corso dell'amore, poiché l'amore, se vi trova degni, guiderà lui il vostro corso.

    L'amore non desidera che il proprio compimento.
    Ma se amate e quindi avete desideri, i vostri desideri siano questi:
    Sciogliersi e farsi simili a un ruscello che scorra e canti alla notte la sua melodia.
    Conoscere il martirio della troppa tenerezza.
    Esser feriti dal vostro proprio intendere l'amore,
    E sanguinare di buon grado, gioiosamente.
    Svegliarsi all'alba con un cuore alato e dire grazie a un nuovo giorno d'amore;
    Riposare nell'ora meridiana e meditare sull'estasi amorosa;
    Tornare a casa con gratitudine la sera;
    E addormentarsi con una preghiera per chi amate nel cuore, e un canto di lode sulle labbra.

    Lyrics:
    When love beckons to you, follow him,
    Though his ways are hard and steep.
    And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
    Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
    And when he speaks to you believe in him,
    Though his voice may shatter your dreams
    as the north wind lays waste the garden.

    For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
    Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
    So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

    Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
    He threshes you to make you naked.
    He sifts you to free you from your husks.
    He grinds you to whiteness.
    He kneads you until you are pliant;
    And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

    All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

    But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
    Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
    Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
    Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
    Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
    For love is sufficient unto love.

    When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."
    And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

    Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
    But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
    To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
    To know the pain of too much tenderness.
    To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
    And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
    To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
    To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
    To return home at eventide with gratitude;
    And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

    M.... A....

    actually, they are not 100% the same as what they sung.
    These are the real ones:

    When love beckons to you, follow him,
    Though his ways are hard and steep.
    And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
    Though he hides a sword among them.
    And when he speaks to you believe in him,
    Though his voice may shatter your dreams

    Love will crown and crucify you.
    Love for your growth so he is for your pruning.
