Hank Williams Jr. - My Bucket's Got A Hole In It Lyrics

Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer.

Well I'm standin' on a corner - with a bucket in my hand
I'm waitin' for a woman - that ain't got no man.

'cause my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer.

Well, I went upon the mountain - I looked down in the sea
I seen the crabs and the fishes - doin' the be-bop- bee.

'cause my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer.

Well, there ain't no use - of me workin' so hard
When I got a woman - in the boss man's yard.

'cause my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer.

Well, me and my baby - we just bought a ford
And now we sit together - on the running board.

'cause my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
Yea! my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer.

  2. S.... ....

I'm a Rock/Metal dude but damn, Hank Williams knows how to write good tunes! Modern Country sucks without Hank Williams Sr and Johnny Cash.

  3. M.... D....

The greatest country musician that ever was! So honest real can feel his emotions and feelings in everything he did sorry but after he was gone country was never the same!

  4. P.... S....

Yeah! The record company ripped off Hank Williams too and the Grand Ole Opry treated him like shit!!! Fuck country music!

  5. R.... B....

I'd never heard this song until WFMW played it one morning this week. Not his biggest hit, but quite a tune.

As much as we ask they keep stirring that malted milk (Robert Johnson)

We to often, that milk done run dry

Amazing how milk, can be something different.

I learned this song as my bucket for a hole in it, the milk done run dry. Why? Opery wouldn't allow beer or alcohol referenced. So , my father learned the alternate take

I find, an interesting parallel. Which I relate

  9. A.... P....

I remember being just a little guy riding in the car with my Nana & Pa Paw and we would be driving around Tennessee coming back to Indiana listening to Hank Sr and singinin along to this song. I sure miss being that little dude, happy, care free. I sure miss my PaPaw, he died in 13 of pancreatic cancer. Miss you PaPaw.

  18. J.... H....

Very great tribute song! Love the bluesy guitar solo as well as the steel solo.

  19. J.... H....

Great use of the Boo wahs from Jerry Byrd on the steel.

  25. T.... P....

Hank Williams is thee greatest period. Any genre. Anyone who says a bad word about Hank in my presence will have the taste slapped our of their mouth. I'm an athiest but Hank is the equivalent to Jesus Christ imo.

  26. C.... D....

if elvis's bucket had a hole in it ,it would drain dry, while hank's would just fill with not only rock, but country too. let me see elvis do that.

    C.... D....

    Elvis sang country too.

  27. J.... M....

I love this shit. Real country. Hard to find these days

  28. S.... A....

    2:27 best part

  29. c.... ....

about everything Hank sang he had written, except Lovesick Blues, Sally Gooden and this. Another Williams, black guy named Clarence.

    c.... ....

Han recorded many songs written by others

    c.... ....

Hank recorded many songs written by others.

  30. M.... W....

That's the trouble, My bucket ain't got no hole in it.

  31. D.... W....

Does anyone remember a version of this song by Fabian in the late 50s or early 60s?

  32. K.... ....

What a shame he had strong demons gnawing him from the inside.

    K.... ....

    Can u chill

    K.... ....

The truth doesn't have to chill.

    K.... ....

@Kermit okay well shit someone is being raped, someone else is being murdered, a child is being stolen for sex trafficking RIGHT NOW just because the truth is bad doesn't mean remind everyone on a nice little tune Hank Williams has beem dead God rest his soul, you negative nancy, we all have demons

    K.... ....

    Been* but whatever

    K.... ....

@Kermit Your comment just comes off as inappropriate, irrelevant and frankly, tasteless. The truth has no urgency here, people are just enjoying the music. Every single perceived 'truth' does not demand to be voiced at every opportunity, especially when it serves no purpose.

If you care so much about the truth, there are plenty of important hidden truths in the world, which you could be exposing. Repeating the same old stuff we've all heard about Hank's "demons", is not one of them. It's pointless and unnecessary, and you saying it is not a matter of "the truth".

  33. S.... P....

Well dag gone my bucket has a hole in it also Hank!!!!

  34. M.... P....

an omitted line...."me & my baby, we got a Ford, now we change the gears from the running board" per Acuff-Rose. they didn't like the mention about beer either

  35. B.... W....

Another good Hank Williams one my favorite Country singer ever

  36. C.... W....

I like to sing this to my dates at the movies

    C.... W....

I am glad I don't sit behind you!

  37. M.... W....

this song is about a time before pasteurization, the only place to by beer was in the bars and saloons if you wanted to take some home you carried a bucket

  38. C.... W....

    Gonna start a new racket
    Gonna start it out right
Gonna sell moonshine in the day
    An peddle dope at night
Oh, my bucket got a hole in it
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PREaivgAIm8

  39. E.... C....

Wish I was born in 1930.

    E.... C....

yeah I'd love to live during the great depression

    E.... C....

    fuck 2000's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    E.... C....

I mean , life sucks , everithing on phone , no more real

  40. Z.... B....

My stepdad used to sing this song all the time. Rest in power, Donny.

  41. S.... F....

I love Hank, so much I named my first born after him, but God I wished Rufus recorded some tunes.

    S.... F....

    ME TOO.

  42. T.... H....

My grandfather use to sing that us kids so everytime I went to visit I would ask him to sing it for me and he would I love it and I loved him

    T.... H....

My Grandpa used to listen to the Grand Old Opry every Saturday night on an old battery radio. He was from Austria, but he loved the Opry.

    T.... H....

W that's what keeps these old songs alive... memories

  43. .... D....

tim timebomb and friends brought me here :)

  44. D.... B....

a holey bucket wouldn't stop me from buying a case :P

    D.... B....

It was before my time, but old folks talked about taking your bucket down to the tap house if you want to take home some beer. I guess it didn't come in bottles :=(

    D.... B....

@cLOSEyourMIND IT CAME IN BOTTLES,BUT IF YOU WANTED FRESH BEER YOU WENT TO THE TAPHOUSE WITH YOUR BUCKET AND BOUGHT IT FRESH FROM THE TAP.

  45. b.... e....

I listened to this song as a little kid and it recently dawned on me that this song is about him dying of alcoholism cus people refer to dying as "kicking the bucket" as the bucket is your life and he has a hole in it from alcoholism so he can't buy any beer cuz he's already dying from it, when I thought about that it blew my mind

    b.... e....

You're reading way too much into it. Hank just learned it from Tee-Tot

    b.... e....

The bucket represents harmony with the universe. The hole is mankinds inability to truly experience the great devine, resulting in the constant anguish of the human condition.

Or, its about a bucket with a hole in it, lol

    b.... e....

Or it's about a time before canned and bottled beer so you carried it home from the local bar, who had it on tap, in a bucket.

  46. J.... A....

Sounds more like an old blues tune then a country song

    J.... A....

It is a blues. It began over a century ago in the brothels of New Orleans.

  47. B.... ....

So cool :) I can see myself on a horse with that song! Check our cover of that amazing tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWqPy9AhSq8

    Hank Williams, The King !!

  50. L.... L....

    Good ole country

  51. P.... M....

I wonder why the Lefty Frizzell version skipped the word beer? This is one of my favourite Hank Williams songs. many thanks

  52. T.... ....

    Top notch song writing

  53. D.... ....

A friend asked me, that if I could go back in time, what would I want to see. My two choices were: the signing of the Declaration of Independence, or see Hank play. Not necessarily in that order!

    D.... ....

Bearing in mind all of ancient history's great mysteries, I can't understand for the life of me, why you would want to go back in time to see the signing of the declaration of independence! I think it would be somewhat of an anti-climactic, if not boring affair. Besides, since American currency was controlled by the bank of England before the signing declaration of independence, and still was after it, and has been up until this very day, the entire concept of American independence is really only an illusion. I'm not saying that Britain rules the U.S, I'm saying central banks rule Britain and the U.S. Any country with a central bank is not really a free country. But going back in time to see Hank play... I can't argue with that one.

  54. R.... E....

My PawPaw used to sing this We've recorded him singin it on video He passed sadly.

  55. c.... e....

    great Hank !

  56. M.... E....

It doesn't get any better! HANK!

  57. B.... P....

    Hank Williams By God

  58. D.... A....

My bucket got a hole in it I can't buy no beer

  59. C.... W....

Thanks for sharing; Jesus Christ Bless

  60. 0.... ....

Few sang the blues better than the king of country.

    0.... ....

    And rock.

    0.... ....

And amazing, the generations who shun the very blues. Hank learned, and sang his way

  61. E.... B....

Ricky Nelson's version doesn't mention beer.

    E.... B....

Eddie Bryan my buckets got a hole in it it don't work no more.

  62. R.... ....

An old song, taught to Hank by Rufus Payne, an African American street performer who taught him to play the guitar as a kid.

    R.... ....

I thought the gentlemans name was Leon Payne , thanks . I believe he penned Lost Highway as well

    R.... ....

Nah he was a black guy lol

    R.... ....

Randy Beeman Leon Payne had nothing to do with this song whatsoever.

    R.... ....

Randy Beeman Hank most likely learned this song from Washboard Sam who recorded it in 1937

    R.... ....

For real had no idea ppl knew who Rufus was any more you sir are a bad ass

  63. D.... O....

Poor bastard.. Can't buy no beer..

    D.... O....

you dumb sob's. it ain't about beer.

    D.... O....

    Derek Olsen

    D.... O....

Karl Bain what is the song about? I want to know the meaning.

    D.... O....

@Brian Jennings THEY HAD 'EM IN TENNESSEE TOO WHEN I WAS JUST A SPROUT......THEY WAS BUCKETS.

    D.... O....

@Janette Ramos Judging by the rest of the lyrics in the song, I'd say if it's not about beer, then it's about sex.

  64. J.... L....

Don Helms said this was the only song that Hank played a solo on because his timing wasn't the greatest. But he still played the hell out of it!

    J.... L....

+LukeTheDrifter07 no, I'm saying he played the "guitar solo" in this song not solo guitar

    J.... L....

elipper Its the only Hank Williams studio recording, that he ever did guitar picking on,which proved he was more proficient on the guitar than was first thought!

  65. I.... P....

I never heard of this before today.  I like it.

  66. S.... B....

I always wished that Jerry Byrd had taken Hank's offer to be in the band permanently. Much better steeler than Helms was.

    S.... B....

Glad to see you're capable of intelligent conversation.

    S.... B....

Well as a matter of fact Don Helms was hand-picked by Hank, they were good friend until the end! Hank always said he had wanted Don with him when he got to the Opry but Don had a previous engagement and couldn't make it but sure enough Don was right there for Hank the next time he played! Don Helms was a quintessential Steel-Guitar player who played on just about every Country singer's record back then including Patsy Cline,Lefty Frizzell,Ernest Tubb and the Drifting Cowboys were actually GIVEN to Ray Price from Hank! Others, may have wanted the Hank Williams sound but Ray Price had it!! Don Helms was the Hank Williams sound!

    S.... B....

No he wasn't. Different, but not better.

    S.... B....

Jerry Byrd just didn't have the exact steel sound for Hank's voice but Don Helms had it perfect and that's why Hank called Don the minute he got to Nashville and the rest is history.

    S.... B....

@Grady Bledsoe YOU MUST BE MY AGE......HAVE'NT HEARD THAT ONE IN A VERY LONG TIME.....

  67. J.... S....

Of hank nobody never and never will sing the white man's blues the way he could that twang of his and low down southern draw only comes from the one and only ALABAMA

    J.... S....

Sixty eight years old in San Antonio, Texas. City girl, but this is one of the earliest songs I remember hearing.

    J.... S....

Jeffrey Smith the white man is the reason for blue music.

    J.... S....

drawl*. How about NOT helping to perpetuate the stereotype that Southerners are ignorant & uneducated? Maybe make an effort to learn basic grammar. It is free to educate yourself. Good luck.

    J.... S....

try Hank Williams the 3rd.. sounds like gramps

    J.... S....

@John Conrad You should take your own advice.

  68. a.... ....

My paw-paw (grandfather) used to sing this. It makes me miss him a lot. (He died last May.) Love you Paw-Paw.

    a.... ....

Bless you. My dad died in 1983. He loved this song too. I love all those Williams boys! Memories are great if you will allow them to be.

    a.... ....

That is cool. I like that.

    a.... ....

    Get back here Hank! hahaha!
RIP= return if possible. Hermunkle, You are the man.

    a.... ....

My grandma was just on life support and woke up singing this.. wow!!

  69. T.... A....

  70. w.... h....

I really love  old Hank my poppy

  71. B.... ....

Am I the only one who noticed the melody for this is identical to "Midnight Special"?

    B.... ....

Beethoveniac you have that backwards bud

    B.... ....

Beethoveniac - They're not identical. Quite similar, but nowhere near identical.

  72. B.... ....

Ol' Jerry Clower, in the story "Marcel's Talkin' Chainsaw" pronounces it "byeer" too. ☺️

  73. C.... W....

Thanks so much for sharing; Jesus Christ Bless! :)

  74. C.... B....

    Love hank w.

  75. A.... ....

I know every Hank song. Idk why this is my favorite.

    A.... ....

All 1,374?🤔 lol. It's my favorite as well, my father in law is my boss and were neighbors.

  76. n.... ....

all we need to see is hank Williams, we don't need the sr. hell, just hank will do...

    n.... ....

    +nathenism
what about Hank III? Dude can rock and sounds a lot like his grandpa!

    n.... ....

Thanks; seeing "Sr." always goes all over me. There is no such person.
Took me a couple of tries but I finally got Wikipedia to fix their version.
