Hank Williams - (I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle Lyrics

I was ridin' number nine
Headin' south from Caroline
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
Got in trouble had to roam
Left my gal and left my home
I heard that lonesome whistle blow

Just a kid actin' smart
I went and broke my darlin's heart
I guess I was too young to know
They took me off the Georgia Main
Locked me to a ball and chain
I heard that lonesome whistle blow

All alone I bear the shame
I'm a number not a name
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
All I do is sit and cry
When the ev'nin' train goes by
I heard that lonesome whistle blow

I'll be locked here in this cell
Til my body's just a shell
And my hair turns whiter than snow
I'll never see that gal of mine
Lord, I'm in Georgia doin' time
I heard that lonesome whistle blow

  45. J.... G....

Bob Dylan owes all his success to Hank Williams...his early sound is directly inspired, if not stolen from what Hank was doing some 20 years earlier.

    J.... G....

“When I hear Hank sing,” Dylan writes, “all movement ceases. The slightest whisper seems sacrilege. In time, I became aware that in Hank’s recorded songs were the archetype rules of poetic songwriting. The architectural forms are like marble pillars, and they had to be there.”

    J.... G....

no doubt, yet in fairness to dylan he extended that influence into his own signature.

  54. M.... H....

On a holiday to Nashville recently, a train passed by a couple of time a night within earshot of the apartment we were staying in. The whistle when it went through sounded as lonesome as Hank is singing about. I couldn't help noticing how appropriate this song is...

  55. F.... K....

I heard that whistle. It blows low and oh it blows so low. I hear that lonesome whistle blow. SO GOOD.

    The real king of country

  82. J.... B....

Ole Hank, Sr was a superstar of his time however he fell into that "money, love, fame & fortune", age old trap & died 50 yrs too soon & succumbed to his own demons @ age 29.
Believe it or not, this happens to the best of all humans, i.e. fame & fortune, usually carries with it certain charteristics, that if not controlled & dealt with properly, can destroy an individual.

  83. I.... ....

Greatest singer and song writer of all time.
