Hall, Tom T. - Pamela Brown Lyrics

I'm the guy who didn't marry pretty Pamela Brown
Educated, well-intentioned, good girl in our town
I wonder where I'd be today if she had loved me too
Probably be driving kids to school

[Chorus:]
I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown
All of my good times and all my roamin' around
One of these days I might come ramblin' through your town
And I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown

I've seen the lights of cites and I've been inside their doors
I've sailed to foreign countries and I've walked upon their shores
I guess the guy she married was the best part of my luck
She dug him 'cause he drove a pick-up truck

[Chorus]

I don't have to tell you just how beautiful she was
Everything it takes to get a country boy in love
Lord, I hope she's happy 'cause she sure deserves to be
Especially for what she did for me

[Chorus]

I guess we all (all males anyway) have our Pamela Brown stories. In my case, her name WAS Pamela (but not Brown) and, shortly after she dumped me, she married another guy shortly thereafter. A few years later, she separated from him, and up and died unexpectedly. This was many years ago, but I still miss her.

  4. C.... W....

This is a song about my mother for those who want to know if she was real. Her parents owned a country music station for about 50 years and she met him.

  5. B.... ....

People in my generation don't understand the difference between auto tune and talent. I feel disappointed to see that "country", is someone writing songs from the comfort of there private jet.

  6. G.... H....

I love this song but I do like Leo Kottke's version of it better.

  7. J.... H....

I saw Tom T Hall live when I was 15 at the Gallia County Fair in Ohio. That was 45 years ago.

  8. O.... I....

Its songs like this that hit home...

  9. F.... M....

Yeah, I had a Pamela Brown in'71 I wish her well but the last time I saw her,her butt looked like two bulldogs in a gunny sack, Yes I owe it all to her

  10. C.... R....

This is real country music. Not the garbage of today.

  11. N.... M....

This is one of those songs that just gets stuck in my head sometimes. A great song.

  12. B.... ....

What a talent. great songwriter. great perceiver of life. Such a comfortable voice. You feel more at ease with T singing than you do in your living room on your best couch.

  13. E.... H....

I married my Pamela Brown. I was a gypsy in the carnival. The road gets lonely. We were married for 20 years. When she left I ended up back on the road.

  14. R.... B....

Love this song and all by Tom T Hall!

  15. h.... a....

Many of us have quite similar memories

  16. l.... A....

    One of his best.

  17. C.... T....

Tom T. performed this song live on a 1974 PBS television show called "Soundstage." He did 30 minutes of music ... would sure love to see that show again someday.

  18. M.... L....

As I must have said before, My "Pamela Brown" (real) story was with a Martha's Vineyard, Vineyard Haven young lady that I dated in 1958 or so. I was working at the Westley House in Oak Bluffs then or at Modern Taxi in Vineyard Haven. I simply adored her but lost her to an aspiring tennis pro that drove a pickup truck. When I first heard this song, it hit me like a MACK truck.

  23. A.... P....

NELLIE RACHEL (BROWN) HOLLARS!!!! ANGELA MAE HOLLARS!!!!

  24. W.... S....

I was engaged to Mary Ann Brown back in 1974. I was in the Navy, we broke it off after they transferred me from Newport, R.I. to San Diego. One day maybe we'll speak again, it would be nice to know how things turned out for her.

  25. A.... P....

    LOVE IT!!!! ANGELA HOLLARS POND!!!!

  26. A.... H....

my all time fave Tom song

  27. G.... M....

Kudos to TTH for writing this great song, but the definitive version belongs to Leo Kottke which takes it to a different place. Leo Kottke is one of my most favored underrated talents.

  28. M.... D....

    Love itmad

  29. G.... H....

    A classic.

  30. k.... ....

    Great song

  31. N.... P....

Magic stuff, just surfing the net.

  32. E.... C....

Jim Walker...yes..that's George Hamilton, who has apparently been replaced by Rob Riggle.

  33. E.... C....

Jim Walker, John Y. Brown was the Kentucky Fried Chicken King..before he
became governor. I wonder what he thinks of all the Colonel Sanders
impersonators on TV. Is the latest one Rob Riggle? Looks like him.

    E.... C....

Ed Clancy OMG Ed, have you seen the guy with the tan now doing commercials? Terrible!!!!

  34. P.... B....

    Pamela Brown by marriage :)

    P.... B....

do you like being a good girl ?

    P.... B....

Are you the Pamela Brown in the song? lol. Where are you from?

    P.... B....

    P.... B....

It is a great song. I have to agree with you. Thanks for responding to my post. Where are you located near?

  35. J.... G....

Absolutely the best story teller of all time

  36. P.... D....

    do I know you?

  37. E.... C....

I see Pamela Brown all the time on CNN. She's a cutie. But I felt she looked like someone I had seen before. And then I discovered her mommy is former Miss America and NFL anchor Phyllis George. Ain't America great?

    E.... C....

Ed Clancy if I am not mistaken Pamela's father was the governor of Kentucky.

    E.... C....

    GOOD TUNE

  38. c.... f....

    He BETTER be in heaven!

    c.... f....

+cynthia fischer - Tom T. is still with us and living in Franklin, TN at his Fox Hollow estate. His wife Dixie passed away a year ago last January due to complications from a brain tumor. In May, Tom will turn 80 years old.

    c.... f....

Tom T Hall is still alive, Dixie passed a few years ago.

  39. R.... W....

was Pamella real Tom...you were one of the best under.rated talents ever....sad many in future will never hear YOU..WE DID...THANK GOD

    R.... W....

+Reginald Woodbridge Tom T. Hall will become LEGEND! Because he wasn't a mainstream heavy hitter, his songs will be passed down from generation to generation by record collection inheritance or by word-to-ear performance. Maybe it's true that many in the future will never hear him, but there are those select few who will continue his music thru the ages. And they shall be more fortunate than the rest.

    R.... W....

+Bill Hughes Sure thing Bill...i agree with you wholeheartedly...i heard Tom T.50 years ago..still do...and me and you...and those who are blessed enough to stumble upon Tom T....WELL YOU SAID IT AND I AGREE....

    R.... W....

Reginald Woodbridge I guess we all have a Pamela Brown, with one name or another. For some of us, the name just happens to fit.

  40. W.... E....

The Original song by Tom T.

  41. B.... T....

    great tune

  42. c.... ....

    Love this song....!!!!

  43. C.... ....

This was a huge hit for T in Australia.  In fact T was a big star there right up until he retired.  One day he'd just come back from there and I asked him how things went. He replied: "Ever see ten thousand drunk atheists?"  All in good humor, of course.  He loved going over there.  Or down there.  Or whatever.

    C.... ....

@Hammers Hamilton I don't see T much anymore since I moved away or I'd ask him.  He doesn't like to speak on the phone because he's hard of hearing and he doesn't do email.  This could have happened as much as thirty or so years ago.  I do recall that the PM personally greeted him at the door - very personal.

    C.... ....

Hello Carolvs. What a wonderful tale. Tom T certainly institutionalised his brand down under with Old Dogs and if I remember rightly Pamela Brown being popular.
It was nice to read his sentiments regards the Australian audience. It showed his Appalachian bible belt roots, the region of the great preachers both African and Scots Irish were alive and kicking, God Bless him and you too Carolvs

    C.... ....

@John Insley Thanks.  Until his retirement T went there almost every year.  Last time he went I asked him how it was.  He replied, "They loved me, paid me, and sent me home." Great sense of humor. On his way back on the plane he wrote "Little Bitty" but couldn't finish it.  He threw in in a drawer.  When he found it a couple of years later he decided to just repeat the first verse.  Good thing he found it; it was a number one for Alan Jackson.

    C.... ....

Wow Thank you.I used to sing Tom T Old dogs in the pubs while he was over here in Sydeney. People loved it and I loved Tom T. He is part of the family and my family love the way I sing it too.
    Have a nice day!

    C.... ....

He performed at the Canterbury Leagues Club in Sydney about 5 years ago,The audience took to the dance floor like a good old country dance!A great night had by all!

  44. b.... ....

I love this song my dad used to play tom t hall and boxcar willie when we went camping n drivn around in the ute, songs of my childhood

  45. J.... R....

At 1:25 Tom is holding what must be an Ovation guitar but not like any I had seen before (which all have the Lyrachord shell). Can anyone fill me in on this?

    J.... R....

In 1967–1968, Ovation introduced and produced its Electric Storm Series of archtop guitars and basses with semi-hollow bodies. The pickups for these instruments were manufactured by Rowe Industries, who produced DeArmond music products in Toledo, Ohio. Production stopped in 1969

  46. g.... ....

Tom T. Hall is terrific. This song reminds me of the 1952 movie "Has Anybody Seen My Gal." It's a comedy about the richest man in the world. He realizes in his old age that he owes all his success to a small-town girl who turned down his proposal and married another guy. She's long dead, but he decides to pay her back by anonymously making her children and grandchildren rich. Unfortunately, things don't work out the way he hoped. It's a great family film that's entertaining but also has a moral.

  47. R.... t....

my mams called pamela brown lol

  48. a.... ....

O.K. - I dearly love & appreciate Tom. T. and love his original. But somehow Leo K. seemed to own this song? I know that is herisy and disrespect to Tom T.

    a.... ....

I think Leo shares this with Tom T ,,,both different feeling ,,good interpretation by Kotkke

    a.... ....

Know what you mean. And Iris Dement took the mortgage on his "I Miss A Lot Of Trains".

    a.... ....

No it isn't. It is merely a matter of taste, and taste is ENTIRELY subjective.

    a.... ....

They both perform the song in their own way .... no need to choose.

  49. t.... w....

    Tom T Hall.what a legend!!!!!.sountrack to much of my youth!!!.xx

  50. A.... A....

GREAT SONG & A GREAT GUY - MET HIM MANY YEARS AGO AT THE SAXON HOTEL IN PETERBOROUGH & HE WAS A GENTLEMAN!

  51. t.... ....

Saw Leo Kottke do this live in Ojai this summer......
    Love Tom T's original version.

  52. k.... ....

What an interesting drum intro. Almost sampleworthy.

  53. O.... I....

The Man can sing from where we all feel but cant get it into words ...Legendary!!!

  54. b.... ....

He should've done a last verse where Pamela ended up a fat trailer pig :)

  55. B.... ....

@Nemspy Kottke has described his own voice as resembling "a flock of geese farting on a muggy day."
Self deprecation aside, no one will ever ask him to audition as a soloist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. But he is unsurpassed at his 12 string slide guitar skills.

  56. N.... ....

@BenAliGtor I think it depends which version you're used to. I grew up hearing this on some country compilation that my Mum owned. I just checked out the Kottke version after seeing your comment. It sounded OK to me, but sort of off-key. Of course it isn't - it's just what I am used to.

  57. c.... l....

Would all you yankees just shut the fuck up ?

  58. B.... ....

He wrote a great song, but Kottke's version is still unsurpassed.

  59. t.... s....

    my favourite as well

  60. D.... O....

Loved this since the first time Kottke sang it on the Victrola; great to hear the real deal, too.

  61. G.... B....

what a great song. great toe tapper.

  62. g.... g....

We all have a Pamela Brown in our past and wonder what if....

  64. R.... S....

Good to hear the original. Have always loved the Leo Kottke version. First heard at Shippensburg University thanks to Shawn Mowery.

  65. P.... B....

    That's my name! :)

    P.... B....

Pam Brown : I knew a Pam Brown. Her dads name was Lee, mother Merrietta. Long time ago....

  66. A.... K....

Anyone who's heard this and was rejected by "the great love" of his life will relate. Mine married 3 times and divorced twice (that I know of!). She didn't want me in 1968 or 2001. I truly hope she's happy!

  67. J.... S....

    @LimeStreetBlues

Hmm, I met "Pamela Brown" several times, and she allway went for the easy "winners". :)

  68. B.... ....

Tom wrote a great song, and Leo Kottke showed how creative the guitar could be played while singing it.

  69. R.... C....

    Nice to hear the original.
